Keep Pettine in Place at Least 1 More Year

  • I don't want to see Pettine fired after this season. I think he's a stand-up guy and I think the players respect him and want to play for him. I feel he's the least to blame for this dismal season and deserves a shot to right-the-ship.

    How could he have predicted:

    1. The Johnny Manziel drama. He was force-fed Manziel in my beilief. Haslam and Farmer were responsible for drafting JM, not Pettine.

    2. Josh Gordon being suspended for the season. Losing an elite #1 receiver, with no close #2 guy, killed this offense.

    3. Dwayne Bowe's complete failure. He sure as heck didn't go out and sign Bowe. Absolutely no blame sure be directed at Pettine.

    4. The poor play of the offensive line. It's just mind-boggling how poorly they have played and are majorlly responsible for the non-existent running game.

    5. Concussions wiping out starters.

    6. The poor performance of the defensive line. I think it starts with Shelton. What's this guy's problem, he was suppose to be a beast?

I could go on and on but Pettine has got the raw deal via things he can't really control. Let's face it, he has no play-makers. How do win games without play-makers? What's the guy to do....yell at them louder?

Keep Pettine, get rid of Farmer, perhaps change some position coaches.

  • Fuck Pettine.

  • He is a beast. Dumbass Pettine/Oneil take him out on passing downs, at least

they were for most of the season.

They misuse players on the defense badly, and they keep running the big

olinemen off and on the field, off and on the field, off and on the ...

    that's stupidass.

They have to make serious changess, or they have to go.

  • Let's not forget, Josh McCown was beaten to a pulp and was probably playing way-hurt for most of the season, thanks to the O-Line.

As many have pointed out it was pass protection that always broke down, but that could include TEs and RBs also not doing their jobs properly, not just the OL. Also it was occasionally the QB just holding the ball well past the internal clock that should have told them to get rid of it.

  • The whole defensive staff has to go, at least.

  • I don't think another coach would've had a much better record than we do, given what Pettine had to work with this year. Donte Whitner has come to Pettine's defense saying keep the coaching staff...."we've let them down." I'm hoping more players speak up.

Who would the Browns turn to if Pettine was fired? What good, experienced NFL coach would want to take over, with the revolving coaching door that Cleveland represents. Would you want a rookie coach to replace him? Unless Urban Meyer wants to come to town, no one else would interest me.

I say stay the course, bring in talent through the draft, give Pettine play-making players and more time.

    Inheriting what defensive talent?

  • We did not go from top 10-15 defense to 2nd worse entirely because of talent.

The rotations are bad, the calls are bad, the scheme is a cluster fuk

  • I cant believe anyone would want to keep any of this staff or the gm !!!

But you'd be hard-pressed to name a next coach, who would have to bring in his own staff.

Look at defensive coordinator Jim O'Neal

"Jim O’Neil was named Browns defensive coordinator on Jan. 29, 2014.

In his first season as defensive coordinator, O’Neil’s unit made significant increases in nearly every major defensive statistic, including red zone defense (29th in 2013 to fifth in 2014), third down defense (31st to 11th), points per game (23rd to ninth) and quarterback rating (16th to first). The team led the NFL in opponent completion percentage (57.1), opponent passer rating (74.1) and passes defensed (99). The Browns finished second in the league with 21 interceptions, the team’s highest total since 2008, while also finishing tied for fourth in takeaways (29). Cleveland’s defense also finished in the top-10 in the league in pass defense (fifth with 6.44 yards per attempt) and total defense (ninth with an average of 5.24 yards per play)."

What's changed with O'Neal? He did a fantastic job last year, obviously a talented guy. Now he's had a secondary with a rash of injuries, and admittedly (Donte Whitner) poor execution by players. Why get rid of this guy? Replace him with who? His job at the end of the season will be to analyze what the problems where, evaluate the players and make recommendations to the GM.

I know I sure wouldn't want to go into the draft with an entirely new coaching staff.

  • You do realize only 5 teams played a weaker schedule than the Browns in 2014?

There is no such thing. Wins are wins. The rams, chargers, and Ravens all suck this year and the browns still lost. You are what your record is. No such thing as an easy schedule.

I disagree, I say there definitely is such thing.

  • How could he have predicted the Manziel drama.... really? Really?

You mean the thing that EVERYONE saw coming except for Aggie fans and Browns fans that loved the smell of Johnny's farts?

  • Fuck Pettine.

We went from 24 to 29.....and, almost, 100% due to our pass D dropping from #1 to #24.....

And that is because Gipson and Haden were out....

Gonna start a D thread and spell it out....cause no one has shown me.....(even once)....where these assumed bad rotations, calls and schemes are to be found.....

    Still waiting or that.....anyone???

  • Hope they keep him too, but defense and running game better be alive and well next year.

  • I do recall Jon Gruden wondering out loud on Monday Night Football, "what defense are the Browns playing?"

I don't know who would want the jobs, but they need a whole new administration. From GM all the way down to the ball boys

It's hard to pin this one on the ball boys, they've been playing their hearts out.
