RG3 set to be a Brown ?

  • Regardless who I want as QB (I'm for Goff or Wentz), I like the fact that they haven't jumped out & made a desperation move to sign the 1st one who agreed to come for a visit. That's how the OLD Browns did business..."Oh, you showed up for the interview? You're hired!"

If nothing else, these guys aren't overreacting. They are weighing vets vs rookies & they'll decide when the time is right to make the choice(s).

As I said, I like the kids in the draft, but I'm just a Fan with no business dictating who we chose, so I'll certainly support the Pros decisions.

well put...i agree one hundred percent...maybe things will finally change here...

  • UPDATES, BUT CONSIDER THE SOURCE GUYS.......

Zombo's take is making a lot of sense now- RG doesn't cost a draft pick, and he's gonna be way cheaper that Kap. Lowball with incentives sounds right. Ghoolie has already weighed in with his opinion. My feeling- if Hue thinks he may use Pryor in a WildDawg role part time, it would mean we have 5-1\2 quarterbacks on the roster come OTAs assuming we sign Griffin, and draft either Goff or Wentz.

  • I'm listening to the radio show, and what they're saying is that it appears our management and coaches are not high on McCown, and he might be let go. McCown either has no guaranteed money, or very little (they didn't know), and cutting him wouldn't hurt our team financially. Honestly, this is something I never even considered given that McCown did pretty well last year, and especially well when you consider the lack of offensive talent we had at WR.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I think it's safe to say our OL will take a step backwards next year, and do you really want an old QB playing behind a leaky line? If you're McCown, do YOU really want to play that way? Our franchise is obviously making a pretty drastic "youth movement" right now, and given that philosophy, it kind of makes sense that McCown will be let go. What I see happening is us taking a QB at #2, AND signing RG III. I believe Hue Jackson will want the rookie to start, with RG III backing him up.

Well, we just put analytics guys in charge and brought in a QB guru who specializes in young QBs ... so I think that should tell you where a 37 year old career backup stands.

I like the guy. He plays with heart and he still has a live arm. Good locker room guy. But he was a placeholder/mentor for Johnny ... he goes down with Johnny just like everyone else did. New guys will start clean at the QB position.

  • what's all this BS about mccown? hue and the rest of the staff should feel lucky they have him on the roster. if he were to be let go i guarantee a bigger response to his being cut than there is with RG3. at least mccown is proven he can play at this level. only thing RG3 has proven is that his college game (ala manziel) does not translate to the NFL, and that he gets hurt.

i'll take mccown all day long over that bust from DC.

i mean if you're hue jackson and you are looking to draft the QB of the future for cleveland, do you want to spend your time trying to correct RG3's game AND teach a rookie? or would you rather give the ball to some guy who's been around and knows what to do with the ball (don't run or dive josh!!)?

wait, let me open up this fortune cookie and let's see what analytics/confuscious says.

Mik...I don't think you're wrong at all, but I get the feeling that we're going young, and we're going quickly. I agree with you, and I think McCown is probably by far the most talented of anybody available at this point, but I'm really thinking we draft a young QB at 2, and that kid starts day 1 with RG III backing him up.

i think we draft QB @2 as well....... i don't know if he'd start though. that depends on what he looks like in TC and if the coaching staff thinks it's the best thing. don't understand the rip roar RG3 is making around here. didn't we draft a bust that same draft (TR)? i would think people would want to sweep away all thoughts of that draft and the biggest bust of them all out the window and out of their minds. if the FO thinks RG3 is worth something to this team then get rid of shaw and put him at three. don't think anyone is going to take this team to a playoff run this year so whoever it is starting is just going in to learn or get killed. however you want to look at the glass, half full or half empty.

  • He's the type of low risk, high reward signing that would make sense for an analytic-driven FO.

His injury concerns are...concerning (for lack of a better word). But, say he were to start six games, do mildly well, then get injured. How would we be any worse off than we currently are? We'd then be trotting out McCown, which is acceptable to many in here already.

The only way I see this RG3 + 2nd overall QB working is if Hue truly wants this QB to sit....so he puts two people between the rookie and the field.

  • Rg3 would be no more than a bridge qb and he knows it up front. They hope to get 10-16 games outa him and not really more. Mcown will be 37 in july and is quite injury prone. Broken collarbone, ribs and head last year. He was brought in as a bridge qb too. They will trade him if rg3 signs. They do not want to start their drafted qb until he gets coached up. That will be the hc job and not rg3s. He gets a shot until the kid is readier. Nothing more.

Not to mention the quarterbacks Hue Jackson has recently been enamored by. Don't forget he has already damned Josh McCown with faint praise.

I would be surprised to see him remain on the roster.

  • Is it possible that we are setting up a back-up to reflect our drafted QB's skillset?

    • If Wentz, then an RG (or CK) signing would seem to do that.
    • If Goff, then sticking with McC would seem to make sense.
    On another note...

I've really started to enjoy former TB GM, Mark Dominik's comments on NFL Insiders... particularly when he starts laying out his sales pitch to a FA.

For RG3 he said he'd push hard on the line of a one-year deal to resurrect his career under the tutelage of one of the NFL's better QB minds, Hue, while our future QB is polished in the wings for 2017. When we say thanks and part ways with RG wishing him luck.

  • I do believe that the Browns need a veteran presence at QB. If they sign RG and draft a QB at #2 or later, we still need that veteran presence....even in a backup role. Having RG, Shaw, Davis, draft pick, plus even Pryor as WR/Emergency QB...does not give us that presence.

Pryor has to make it as a WR. Shaw/Davis likely ultimately expendable. Having RG initially as starter McCown as backup, plus rookie plus Pryor as only Emergency backup seems to me to be the way to go with our ultimate QB plan.

Mark Dominik's career arc is the one I wanted to emulate so badly...except for the failure as GM. He was basically just this marketing undergrad who loved football. Cool story IMO.

I don't disagree with that pitch. Cleveland is one of the few spot, if not the only one, that would outright give away a starting spot. RG3 almost needs Cleveland more than Cleveland needs him.

The only thing I'm worried about is....what if he has a Pro Bowl season?

  • Why?
