It would be stupid to take a QB

The Browns Board

  • There are only two scenarios for the Browns:

    1. If the front office and coaching staff like whichever QB is available at 2, run up to the podium and draft him.

    2. If the front office and coaching staff do NOT like whichever QB is available at 2, trade the pick to a QB-hungry team and rape them.

Hopefully if it's number 2, they're putting a vibe out that they are considering taking the QB to get a better offer from someone who's desperate. .

    All the way to #2...

Here is the fact gentlemen: Mr. Hue Jackson and this FO may in fact believe that they have their #2 overall franchise QB.....in one Robert Griffin III. I think it is highly possible that Jackson likes him...and wants him to be this teams future QB. He is only 26. Just entering what would be the prime of his career. He has shown that he can play very well in the right situation....and IF he can stay healthy.

RG III right here right now in the minds of our Browns FO may be a better prospect to be a franchise QB for this team than any of the higher rated QBs coming out of this draft. So, do NOT be surprised if any of the following occur:

    1. The Browns do NOT take a QB at #2.....but take another position player.

    2. The Browns trade down....and bypass the QBs altogether and pick someone else with their trade down.

    3. That the Browns do work some kind of deal....either trade down or trade up, to take a QB in the mid to late 1st round, like a Lynch.

    4. That the Brown feel that they can get just as good a QB in the second round at #32. Can you say Derek Carr, Teddy Twatwater, Andy Dalton. Or in this case: Connor Cook, possibly Hackenberg, Prescott.

    5. That the Browns skip that even and continue with RG and even McCown/Shaw/Davis, plus take a mid to late round QB. Cardale, Brisset.

Bottom line....these guys may think they HAVE their QB. And whatever you and I think about it is meaningless.

If they think RG3 is the guy and trusting that, they are utterly incompetent. While its possible he could be the guy, I am putting no faith in it based on recent performance. It would make zero since to me to pass on a QB at #2, increase my changes that either one of them hits. This theory of building the team first and then getting the QB is flawed to me. I think if the Browns pass on Wentz or Goff at #2 they are going to rue the day. But then again I could be wrong, but I would rather take a chance on find a QB then worrying about finding the right LB at this point, priorities are messed up.

Well.....that is YOUR problem. If they think RG III is the guy, then he is the guy. And I seriously suspect that they have more competency at running a football team than you do. If THEY....Jackson Brown, Berry Depo. put faith in him....you are stuck with their decision.

, increase my changes that either one of them hits. This theory of building the team first and then getting the QB is flawed to me.

Except, of course it has worked many times.....See the Seattle Seahawks of 2 years ago. See the Steelers of 2005. The NY Giants with Eli. Oh...and the New England Patriots with Brady. See any number of other teams.

Again...maybe you are the one with flawed thinking. I seem to recall the Cleveland Browns constantly trying to get a QB.....and never having much of a team around him....with Couch/Weeden etc.

I think if the Browns pass on Wentz or Goff at #2 they are going to rue the day. But then again I could be wrong, but I would rather take a chance on find a QB then worrying about finding the right LB at this point, priorities are messed up.

At least you made one cogent statement...bolded.

Adam Schefter Says Browns Aren't Going QB at No. 2, and Are Taking the Highest Bidder for a Trade

Schefter caught everyone off guard with his response about Cleveland having decided already that they are not thinking quarterback at No. 2, but instead are selling that quarterback to the highest bidder. Here is a transcript on what he said about the Browns:
"Even before this trade was being made, I was of the understanding that Cleveland was not going quarterback. That was my firm and distinct impression and intel. Now if that is accurate, and I believe it is, then I think this trade is a good thing for Cleveland. Now, Cleveland is sitting in that second hole. If any other team wants a quarterback, and there are teams who want that other quarterback, they have to come to Cleveland, and Cleveland gets to name that price.
To me, I think the trade added to Cleveland's leverage because I don't think they intended to take a quarterback. They as an organization have new people, a new approach, a new perspective, and they have so many holes to fill. I don't think their perspective was, 'let's get a quarterback to play with all these holes and get his confidence trampled on right out of the box.' They've got RGIII, they feel good about RGIII, there's a connection between Hue Jackson and RGIII. The goal is to build all of the pieces on the team and then go get a quarterback."

Unless you want to believe in the power of hypnosis. We have a potential starting QB that's as fragile as Sam Bradford, and supposedly can't decipher an NFL defense worth a damn. I said it elsewhere, if Hue got a hard on watching RG III tossing passes in a T-shirt, he's a poor choice as a QB guru.

Not sure how much speculation there is that the QB's are overrated. I've heard a lot of good things about both of the top 2 QBs. I still wouldn't be shocked if we trade out of #2 and even if we don't, I wouldn't be shocked at all if we don't draft a QB.

Well, I have been over this. Different reports have said that half the NFL GMs think that neither QB is top of the draft quality.

Other prognosticators had early on said the same as well.

And with this I am only reporting what I hear, yet some don't like it and think I have made this shit up. I haven't.

But I have no doubt that these QBs will be drafted high. QBs are at a premium, and just the chance to get one will make team perhaps overreach.

And my position is: if we do get one of them, then I hope he is the second coming of Otto Graham.

  • well if rg3 shits the bed (which he will sooner or later) and we didn't draft a top tier QB this year (wentz or goff and that's where that line is drawn) hue jackson will look like the biggest bafoon outside of adam schefter. god knows haslam is a patient man and jackson has all the time in the world to build a contender.

As I see it, we would probably be no worse off. We missed on David Carr/Joey Harrington/Christian Ponder/Jamarcus Russell/Blaine Gabbert/Jake Locker/Vince Young/Mark Sanchez/....and we can miss on these guys too. There are a few more we should have missed on as well......JMZ/Weeden/Quinn.

  • Here is something that would not break my heart: If the Browns never drafted a QB.......if they got their QBs always from the "Secondary market". Veteran free agents.....or trades for a QB.

As I documented some weeks ago, nearly half of all the Super Bowl QBs did not play in that game with the QB that drafted them, so maybe the Browns should go with that philosophy.

I guess this approach is a result of being gun shy after all the bad choices they have made at that positions the last 20+ years.

(and yes, you can go back to Eric Zeier).

Otto Graham was not drafted by the Browns. Frank Ryan was not drafted by the Browns. Bill Nelsen was not drafted by the Browns. Brian Sipe was a 13th round pick....would have been a UDFA this day and age. Kosar was a supplemental pick. Vinny Testaverde was not drafted by the Browns.

Some of our half ass decent post 1999 QBs were not drafted by the Browns: Kelly Holcomb, Derek Anderson, Campbell, Hoyer, McCown.

Picking up a QB with high draft picks has been torture for Browns fans. Getting semi-proven young veterans would not be the worst modus operandi.

Yea....make Ghoolie happy. At least the Browns have had some success drafting OL. The last 4 we have taken in the first round before Erving were: Alex Mack, Joe Thomas, Jeff Faine, Steve Everitt. All good to outstanding players.

    So? WTF...Draft Tunsil?

  • well if it's not a QB and you are doing a total rebuild then yes, tunsil. the first building block of every football team.
