What Could've Been Against Pats...
-
Let me first say that we weren't going to win this game, no matter what. The title of the post reflects the lost chances Pryor had to make some very big plays, and the article I'm posting is one of my favorites every week. It's the "film review" that comes every Wednesday or Thursday, and it's terrific.
The first play I want to look at is after Kessler got hurt, and we're already down a bunch of points. Pryor comes in as QB, and he runs to the left for a gain of 1 yard. Seems like no big deal, right? Well, WRONG. The Browns had two WR's lined up left, and the Pats only had one DB covering them, with the second cheating drastically towards the line of scrimmage. Pryor runs to his left with the hopes our WR can maintain his block, but after a decent cut block, the defender gets up and makes a terrific tackle. Hindsight is always 20/20, but had the other WR hit the cut defender again, Pryor is still running. Just look at that open field. It's a touchdown, and that would've given us 14.
The second play also involves Pryor, and this time it's a sloppy fake and roll out to the right. Pryor ends up throwing a decent ball to a covered Higgins, who can't make the play for his first catch of the season (how does he not have a damn catch?). The Pats defender is over-pursuing Pryor, and had Pryor planted his right foot and shot up toward the left-middle...it's a big gainer.
Every team, every week has these missed opportunities. Problem is, they are better than the Browns and can probably find other ways to make up for them. The Browns cannot. We don't have a margin of error that we can overcome, and we need to hit the plays that present themselves. Also, we need to stick with Pryor for a few plays every week. Big plays are THERE if we could just execute, and we need those so badly right now.

I look at our O, and I see a potentially very serviceable WR tandem with Pryor and Coleman, a pro-bowl (FWIW) tight end in Barnidge, two pretty decent runner in Crow and Duke. I see several components of a very solid OL in JT, Bitonio, Greco. Obviously a QB is a big thing, but we're not too many players away from having a very productive O, if injuries could stop fucking us over.
On the D side, I see...? Haden is good when not injured. Nassib looks promising but it's very early. Same for a few others, but we're a lot more than a couple of players away from having a competitive, let alone top, defence.
Get the feeling we'll see some Saints/Giants-esque performances, where our games end up finishing like 41-38, if both sides add one or two key players in the offseason.

Agree. Injuries hurt badly....but absent those, the offense has tools (per the good definition).....where the defense seems to have a bunch of tools...per the bad definition.
Jesus to Jesus, how did they get to this point? Letting go of Dansby/Whitner/Gipson/Kruger/ etc. etc. etc.?
We could use both Myles Garrett and Jabril Peppers in the draft next year.....to hell with a Quarterback. (well, maybe not...but the defense is equally urgent.....more needs there).

We're not even close on defense, and that scares me a bit. We don't get to the QB...like ever. I don't remember hearing Ogbah's name hardly at all. I certainly haven't seen him hitting the QB, that's for damn sure. Now, he's super young, and I'm not about to start calling the guy a bust or anything, but I'd like to see SOMETHING from the guy! This is how the QB position really hurts us. You're probably wondering, "What the hell does getting sacks have to do with OUR QB?!" Well, it's easy. If we had our QB, we could draft Myles Jarrett. This is a guy who I project as being an immediate impact maker, and a guy I'd just love to root for. However, as it stands right now, we don't know if we have our QB, so drafting Jarrett is probably an impossibility. Our lone hope is Kessler. If Cody maintains his play, doesn't regress, and then actually IMPROVES....drafting a QB might not be the first thing on our list. The odds are vastly against it, but it's certainly possible.
Back to the defense. Joe Haden is pissing me off so bad, I can't believe it. Now I love me some Joe Haden, but damn man....he looks SLOW. I heard a rumor that coaches could eventually try him out as a free safety, similar to what Woodson did at the end of his career, but I wouldn't look for that to happen any time soon. Bottom line, Joe Haden shouldn't get his ass blown up by some little white guy I've never heard of. Hogan? Who the hell is that guy?
Maybe our biggest need on defense is the safety position. It's been beyond awful, and it's starting to become a huge issue. We need a playmaker on defense, and right now, we don't have one.

Kessler has really shown some promise and I'm glad it appears he's gonna be under center this sunday. If he continues to get better, I think he has a good enough upside to at least not worry about the QB position in the next draft.
It's literally Garrett or bust right now for me. Peppers would be a good back-up as well of course.

What we needed is bosa to not get a deal done with the chargers and go back into the draft. He got two sacks snd more impressively 5 tfl's against the best line in football
-
I know, I saw him. His motor looked incredible, and he had a couple plays where he ran down people from behind. He had a good game, and I hope he can keep it going. Lord knows how badly we need Ogbah to have a game like that...

Hogan scored on us last year, and he made plays against the Patriots and many other DBs, it's not just Haden. The offense has a tremendous advantage over the defense. But, to a bigger point, this is why the Patriots are a good team. They take what the NFL gives them. Sheard, Louis, and other just from the Browns. They just get good players after they have been developed by other teams... with exception to their own home grown products, ie. Brady and Hightower and others. We need to develop the talent but then it's crucial to keep the talent around.
-
This is what Joe Thomas was talking about a couple of weeks ago. Why let Sheard go? What about Schwartz? I mean, what do we possibly gain by letting him walk? He didn't want THAT much money, and we could sure as hell could use him now.
Our defense got beat up pretty bad, and you get the idea that the Pats could've scored 50 on us if they really wanted to. Take a look at some of the ball placement by Brady. There were a few times our defenders were RIGHT THERE and the ball was just too good. Other times our defense just had their heads up their asses (Joe Haden failing to cover Bennett was really stupid). But the absolute biggest thing that stand out in my mind is the lack of pass rush. Now, Tom gets the ball out in a quick hurry, but still...I'm so damn tired of not getting consistent pressure.
I've said it several times before, and I'll say it again. I pray that Kessler is somehow the answer at QB, even though I don't think he is, but I hope to God I'm wrong because we need Myles Jarrett so damn bad.

I have to add our DTs (feels good to type "DTs") Shelton and Meder/Paea have turned into space eaters inside.

Nope.

As it stands I don't see us taking a QB early next year because from what I've read/seen there isn't one worth taking
That could obviously change like it did with Wentz but with Kessler performing well I don't see it happening

how can u see that with a sampling size of what, 1.3 games in coleman? and pryor now delegated to do everything?
but ur right. coleman could be the next sammy watkins........ 🥷
If by that you mean he could be injured most of the time, he's on his way.
It's based on the games he's played for us where his yardage hasn't come from blown coverages where he's wide open, but from solid route running, making defenders miss and coming down with tough catches.

Really? I thought I recalled we took our offer off the table or something?
