What Could've Been Against Pats...

The Browns Board

  • Kessler has really shown some promise and I'm glad it appears he's gonna be under center this sunday. If he continues to get better, I think he has a good enough upside to at least not worry about the QB position in the next draft.

It's literally Garrett or bust right now for me. Peppers would be a good back-up as well of course.

  • What we needed is bosa to not get a deal done with the chargers and go back into the draft. He got two sacks snd more impressively 5 tfl's against the best line in football

  • I know, I saw him. His motor looked incredible, and he had a couple plays where he ran down people from behind. He had a good game, and I hope he can keep it going. Lord knows how badly we need Ogbah to have a game like that...

Has he done anything yet? I think ive seen him bat down a pass or two but i havent seen him anywhere near the qb nor have i seen him beast an ol to make a run tackle

  • We're not even close on defense, and that scares me a bit. We don't get to the QB...like ever. I don't remember hearing Ogbah's name hardly at all. I certainly haven't seen him hitting the QB, that's for damn sure. Now, he's super young, and I'm not about to start calling the guy a bust or anything, but I'd like to see SOMETHING from the guy! This is how the QB position really hurts us. You're probably wondering, "What the hell does getting sacks have to do with OUR QB?!" Well, it's easy. If we had our QB, we could draft Myles Jarrett. This is a guy who I project as being an immediate impact maker, and a guy I'd just love to root for. However, as it stands right now, we don't know if we have our QB, so drafting Jarrett is probably an impossibility. Our lone hope is Kessler. If Cody maintains his play, doesn't regress, and then actually IMPROVES....drafting a QB might not be the first thing on our list. The odds are vastly against it, but it's certainly possible.

Back to the defense. Joe Haden is pissing me off so bad, I can't believe it. Now I love me some Joe Haden, but damn man....he looks SLOW. I heard a rumor that coaches could eventually try him out as a free safety, similar to what Woodson did at the end of his career, but I wouldn't look for that to happen any time soon. Bottom line, Joe Haden shouldn't get his ass blown up by some little white guy I've never heard of. Hogan? Who the hell is that guy?

Maybe our biggest need on defense is the safety position. It's been beyond awful, and it's starting to become a huge issue. We need a playmaker on defense, and right now, we don't have one.

Hogan scored on us last year, and he made plays against the Patriots and many other DBs, it's not just Haden. The offense has a tremendous advantage over the defense. But, to a bigger point, this is why the Patriots are a good team. They take what the NFL gives them. Sheard, Louis, and other just from the Browns. They just get good players after they have been developed by other teams... with exception to their own home grown products, ie. Brady and Hightower and others. We need to develop the talent but then it's crucial to keep the talent around.

  • This is what Joe Thomas was talking about a couple of weeks ago. Why let Sheard go? What about Schwartz? I mean, what do we possibly gain by letting him walk? He didn't want THAT much money, and we could sure as hell could use him now.

Our defense got beat up pretty bad, and you get the idea that the Pats could've scored 50 on us if they really wanted to. Take a look at some of the ball placement by Brady. There were a few times our defenders were RIGHT THERE and the ball was just too good. Other times our defense just had their heads up their asses (Joe Haden failing to cover Bennett was really stupid). But the absolute biggest thing that stand out in my mind is the lack of pass rush. Now, Tom gets the ball out in a quick hurry, but still...I'm so damn tired of not getting consistent pressure.

I've said it several times before, and I'll say it again. I pray that Kessler is somehow the answer at QB, even though I don't think he is, but I hope to God I'm wrong because we need Myles Jarrett so damn bad.

  • I look at our O, and I see a potentially very serviceable WR tandem with Pryor and Coleman, a pro-bowl (FWIW) tight end in Barnidge, two pretty decent runner in Crow and Duke. I see several components of a very solid OL in JT, Bitonio, Greco. Obviously a QB is a big thing, but we're not too many players away from having a very productive O, if injuries could stop fucking us over.

On the D side, I see...? Haden is good when not injured. Nassib looks promising but it's very early. Same for a few others, but we're a lot more than a couple of players away from having a competitive, let alone top, defence.

Get the feeling we'll see some Saints/Giants-esque performances, where our games end up finishing like 41-38, if both sides add one or two key players in the offseason.

I have to add our DTs (feels good to type "DTs") Shelton and Meder/Paea have turned into space eaters inside.

Agree. Injuries hurt badly....but absent those, the offense has tools (per the good definition).....where the defense seems to have a bunch of tools...per the bad definition.

Jesus to Jesus, how did they get to this point? Letting go of Dansby/Whitner/Gipson/Kruger/ etc. etc. etc.?

We could use both Myles Garrett and Jabril Peppers in the draft next year.....to hell with a Quarterback. (well, maybe not...but the defense is equally urgent.....more needs there).

    Jabril Peppers

    Nope.

  • As it stands I don't see us taking a QB early next year because from what I've read/seen there isn't one worth taking

That could obviously change like it did with Wentz but with Kessler performing well I don't see it happening

If by that you mean he could be injured most of the time, he's on his way.

It's based on the games he's played for us where his yardage hasn't come from blown coverages where he's wide open, but from solid route running, making defenders miss and coming down with tough catches.

Not sure we will get to the bottom of that situation any time soon.
  • The Browns radio show went into Kessler's performance in depth, and I have to say, some of the stats were nothing short of eye-popping. For instance, Pro Football Focus creates their own "QB Rating" statistic, and it's probably measured by a whole bunch of different stuff, but the bottom line is that it obviously relates to how well a QB plays. Now, according to this stat, Kessler is ranked ahead of Kirk Cousins, Blake Bortles, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, and a host of others. Not only that, but guess who leads the league in completion percentage against "being pressured"? Cody freaking Kessler is ranked NUMBER ONE against pressure, and he completes an astounding 86% of his passes when under duress. Now, I don't exactly know what constitutes "being pressured", but we're not talking about Cody being "pretty good" or "in the top half" of this category, we're talking about his being freaking number one. Granted, he hasn't played as much as other starters, but this completely shocked the crap out of me.

There's no way to sugar coat this. We got killed by Josh Gordon (again) and Corey Coleman's injury. We knew before the season started that in order for us to surprise some people and steal some wins, we were going to have to avoid the injury bug. Not only have we NOT avoided it, we've embraced the damn thing. A team likes ours simply doesn't have the depth needed to overcome pivotal injuries, and that's just how it is. We will be further tested by losing our best guard, and probably the best guard in our division. We have gotten the lion's share of our rushing yards when running behind Joel's pulling skills, so don't be surprised if we can't run worth a crap (again). Exacerbating this scenario is the fact that the Titans have a killer DL. Yikes.

But back to Kessler. Albert Breer wrote an article today which essentially commended the Browns on what they've done and how they are approaching the most recent rebuild. Breer further stated that the Browns were completely sold on Kessler before the draft, and were amazed with his ability to quickly digest information and apply it to his craft. Further, he went on to say that Kessler was the Browns first choice of day 2 QB's, and wanted Cody above and beyond ANY of the available players left. What we're starting to see is just a little bit of why our franchise was so high on him. I can't think of too many 3rd string QB's that could come in and not be totally lost after being thrown into the mix in like game 3. That's basically unheard of.

Am I saying that Cody is our franchise QB? That he's an eventual allstar? That our problems are solved? Hell no, nobody is saying that, but the general feeling from a few sports writers and our management is that the game is not too big for Kessler, and he just might surprise some people. He doesn't get the ball down field, he doesn't run for any yards, yet he's calm, cool, and collected against the rush, and he seems to know where to go with the ball...not to mention throwing with surprising accuracy. We dodged a severe bullet with his recent injury, and we get to watch our young QB progress and try to win a position that nobody else could lock down. He's got a chance, no matter how small, and that's pretty exciting for this team.

you are correct,it was mack who didn't want to be here as usual wargogaw doe's not know what he is talking about

  • Mack is a quitter. He chose to leave. You usually don't get that chance, we'll throw you out if you ain't bout that life. But Mack was embraced and seen as one of the few bright spots in a dark Browns past... He sold out, I couldn't care less about him. Cribbs has a place in my orange heart because he bled OnB and still does to this day.

Fuck you Alex Mack, I named my late axolotl after you and you broke our hearts.

Guys, HueJax & FO have a plan on changing the culture in this town. Do you luv the game? Do you believe you can join us in making C-town a winner again? No Dak-DWI, stories were out Bosa nor Zeke wanted to be Browns. Story I read on Schwartz, was Browns wanted a answer from Mitch's agent on a deal that gave him more $$ than KC period. But agent refused, cuz agent(got number$$) still wanted to consult Mitch & KC. Does that sound like a guy Hue wants to go into battle with on Sundays? FO Statement was made that day. But penny pinching on talented FA's may doom them just as well too..
