Quarterbacks on the Hot Seat

  • Technically Tannehill did not go to the playoffs since he went out with a season ending injury in game 14.

  • Phillip Rivers..when you got 14 children in school & a house in S.D. why d hell move to LA? By trade dead line Phillip puts his own arss on hot seat..Gip you would take Tanny in Cleveland, like tomorrow..(and he brings his wife)

The most popular person in KC is the 2nd string QB.

I wanted Mahomes in a Browns uniform. I think he could be a real good one in time.

Maybe, yes.....but that is not saying that much given the state of our QBs. Though, actually, I may perhaps be just as willing to roll with what we got....all younger than Tannehill..including B.O.

(and knowing that we also have 2 first round picks next year that may come into play at QB)

Smith is a pretty steady guy. And who is that 2d string QB? I mean, they picked Mahomes...is that who you mean? If Smith really fell off the rails...which I don't see happening, then there could be clamors to put the rookie in to see what he can do. But, of all the top 4 QBs drafted last year: Trubisky, Watson Kizer, Mahomes.....Mahomes seem to be the most "raw" and in need of time to develop.

  • @boo-fagley said:

    Sam Bradford - Vikes

I guess he is still the QB for what it cost.

I would have included him.....but since it seems clear that The Twat may not be back soon, I think Bradford is pretty secure.

And...for what its worth (if you read my trivia)....Bradford did lead the NFL in completion pct. last year. I mean, in and of itself, that's a good thing.

  • @boo-fagley said:

If KC drafted him he will be a bust.

    Lol, kind of agree.

You could argue KC had the worst QB drafting of ANY team since the merger.

Dawson & Montana, probably Alex Smith are their best since then, all pick ups.

  • @boo-fagley said:

Alex Smith is hated in KC. The Chiefs never scored a TD vs the Steelers in the playoffs.

Both Tribinsky and Mahomes basically played the same number of games

    Tribinsky 31 games 4,762 yards 41 TDs

    Mahomes 32 games 11, 252 93 TDs

Tribinsky looks more unproven to me.

Mahomes started in all those game I think. Trubisky only started in 11. So Mahomes had about triple the number of starts. You did not list the attempts and completions. I suspect that would be about triple for Mahomes.

Also...the fact is...Mahomes played in that system....whatever you call it....that fast break system....that has never produced a quality NFL QB.

I would say the Sam Bradford experiment has blown up in the lab.

Bridgewater showed more promise than I have ever seen out of Bradford. Did that clown Bradford ever even make the post season? Not that I recall.

Point though is: I think his job as starting QB for the Vikings is secure. Who else would they go to? Bridgewater ain't playing...and who else? They have Case Keenum. Didn't he just get cut from the Rams?

    Bradford's job is safe.

Who, besides Todd Blackledge have they drafted?

  • @boo-fagley said:

    Absolutely. Snake bit.

KC has an infatuation for ex SF 49er QBs - Bono, DeBerg, Grbac, Smith and Montana. There may be a few more.

Well....if what you say is true...and it is....then we should expect KC to sign Kaepernick....fair to say?

  • @boo-fagley said:

The Chiefs are pretty set at QB with Smith, Patrick Mahomes and Tyler Bray, but I could see Kaepernick as a fit in KC’s offense if there was a major injury on the team. Still, like Hunt said, Reid probably wouldn’t bring in Kaepernick due to the dynamic between him and Smith.

Yea, Kaepernick replaced Smith in SFO....not sure how well those 2 would play together. But..Tyler Bray...the backup behind Smith? I guess I know nothing about him....but that does not sound like they are "pretty set". The raw as hell....not ready to see the field for 2 years Mahomes behind them?

Not entirely sure, Bill Kenny? Tyler Thigpen?

Point is they aren't good at it.

  • @boo-fagley said:

Im not a fan of Mahomes or Tribinsky.

Im glad the Browns did not get caught up in the spending spree in a weak QB draft,

We shall see. For all we know, this draft could rival 1983 or 2004!!. (you never know)

    They drafted Kevin Hogan!!

But, here are the names of the QBs drafted by the Chiefs over the years:

    Kevin Hogan

    Aaron Murray

    Brodie Croyle

    Pat Barnes

    Ricky Stanzi

    Steve Stenstrom

    Steve Matthews

    Matt Blundin

    Mike Elkins

    Danny McManus

    Doug Hudson

    Todd Blackledge

    Bob Gagliano

    Steve Fuller

    Pete Woods

    David Jaynes

    Dean Carlson

    Mike Livingston

    Eddie Wilson

    No...not a stellar group...at all.

Blackledge had the most promise and is the biggest bust.

Steve Fuller and Mike Livingston....average QBs are the best of the bunch.

But then...look at the Browns QB drafting prowess over the years.

Nothing to write home about either.

  • I think Kizer replaces Kessler by week 5 and never looks back!

  • Hot seat for me implies an established starter with someone pushing them. Dalton fits this mold. He's established and has a backup in AJ McCarron that many are eager to see. Smith's KC situation seems like the 2nd best fit. Not too many others of those mentioned so far fit nearly as well IMO... but I have a new name I'll close with...

Placeholders aren't on a hot seat. Hoyer, Glennon and Savage are clearly placeholders. It's not a matter of "if", but "when" for them. Only difference in Hoyer's case is that his replacement arrives next season. Pretty much the same for any of the Jets QBs.

Browns differ from the Jets in that we have three contenders with more promise each than the Jets QBs have in total... unless my former darkhorse, Petty, turns it on. 😉 No one is established, so the seat is cold.

May be semantics, but I also do not think of Bortles and Tannehill as hot-seaters... more like QBs at a cross-roads. Neither has anyone pressing them.

Other young guns are still a year or so away from their crossroad. I count Goff in this group. A good 2017 will push it down the road another year; a bad one will set it in 2018.

And now the new name... Tom Brady.

    • Established vet? Check... a 40-yo one to boot.
    • Being pushed? Eh... going into the season more like shadowed, but when Jimmy G was not traded, the shadow grew longer.

I don't expect Tom to falter, but should he, or get injured, then the least sentimental HC in the NFL will see his 2018 UFA backup in action and all bets are off...

  • Tour2ma nailed it! I've been thinking the same thing about Brady! He's an injury away from retirement. I remember how Peyton Manning lit it up his first year in Denver. Of course, he had Decker, Demarious Thomas, Julius Thomas, Emanuel Sanders, and Wes Welker.

But by year three it was the Bronco's Defense that was winning their games, not Manning! His arm looked like a wet noodle and he was throwing a lot of interceptions.

If Brady stays upright then I feel sorry for Garapolo! If he doesn't then Garapolo steps right into the role Brady stole from Drew Bledsoe.

    Either way, their Division sucks!

Tannehill should be on the HOT Seat, then Alex Smith, Bortles, and maybe even Mr. Highly overpaid Flacco considering he seems to have caught the injury bug last two years. I think Dalton is secure unless he gets injured, Sam Bradford is just holding the job until Bridgewater comes back next year(if he ever comes back) and then there's Tyrod Taylor

This is fair...but then....could Smith not fit here as well....given how high Mahomes was taken?

    No love for Hackenberg?

Tannehill, yes, agree. Bortles though.....they may become so fed up with him that they may be wiling to put Chad Henne in instead. So, while no one is pressing him...he is doing a good job of pressing himself.

Fair point...but, yea, I don't see anything short of injury that would push him out.

  • Actually under Adam Gase Tannehill had really turned it around until the injury in game 14.
