"Browns' hierarchy seems to prefer Derek Anderson over fan-favorite Brady Quinn"

The Browns Board

  • Dude ???? DA & BQ have been in camp together for the past few years---DA started and BQ did the clipboard thang... Therefore, DA must have looked better to the coaching staff as he was given the starting position.....

I'm just a plain ol' Browns fan and unlike you I don't have all this inside information telling me as to why player A is starting over player B... I can only assume that the coaching staff felt that DA gave them a better chance to win....

Now before you start ripping my head off let me say this very clearly---as a 1st round selection I feel that Quinn should be given every opportunity to start---this is what you do with 1st round selections.... The only fly in this ointment is that the current regime has no ties to Quinn, didn't draft him and has no face saving obligation to appoint him the starter...

Seems to me, though, that the Quinn supporters on this board have a deep hatred for Anderson yet pose a blind loyality for the untested Quinn.... I don't have any ill feelings toward either and would accept either as my QB if thats the direction the coaching staff decided... I think Anderson has a huge upside... Quinn on the other hand has shown me some good things in his game but truthfully I haven't seen enough to support a conclusion.....

I want to see Quinn play multiple games with the 1st unit and once he gets that opportunity I'll then form a final opinion..... With that said, however, who ever is under center will have my support....

  • It may appear to be a bias for someone like you Daddybull that hasn't been around here in awhile and seen the posts for the last year. The fact of the matter is we have seen what DA is and not Quinn, plain and simple. DA is the league's worst ranked passer, hence wanting to see Quinn.

There has never been a QB competition between DA and Quinn, period. DA was crowned the starter last year the second he signed on the dotted line, and the year before Quinn wasn't even in camp until late. There is virtually no way the designated backup can beat out a coronated starter based on camp reps barring the starter completely crapping the bed. Most of the reps with the first team go to the starter and DA is a good practice player when there is no rush to be found.

Speaking of which, here is something from Grossi that I've been saying for quite awhile now.

Hey, Tony: Do you think splitting the reps between both QBs in training camp is a good idea? It seems to me they need go ahead and let one of them get all the reps to develop some chemistry with the line and receivers. It seems to me at this point they are short-changing both guys when it comes to practice time. Also, it seems we have seen exactly what Anderson is, but we don't yet know what Quinn brings to the table and it is time to find out. -- Gordon Rogers, Charlotte, N.C.

Hey, Gordon: I'm not in favor of open competitions at quarterback. I just don't think throwing in practice without a live rush and hitting shows anything. I think you make excellent points and I tend to agree with them.

    Hey Tony Link

Nice stuff, Riff. If somebody has a quote that indicates that the players love Anderson and hate Quinn, I've never seen it... and I read everything.

Did you read about how Quinn pissed off the majority of the locker room by introducing McCain at the republican rally?

Yeah I'm sure everybody loved that. That's why RAC had to cut off political talk.

Lums, where you been man? You dropped the ball on this thread.

  • Lest YE not forget...Oreo Crennel didnt play Quinn because of his freaky hate of rookies, , in my mind. To me just because the guy held out and DA played lights out first half of season he got, forgot. After the last half of season 2 years ago...we all saw it coming....I wont even mention the very worst and most embarrassing pro-bowl I've ever watched. Quinn should be named the starter from day 1....he's had two years to watch...throw him the FK in there!

    Nice job not mentioning it.

And apparently you missed Cutler in the '09 Pro Bowl. And most other Pro Bowls.

  • DA's performance made me wince...It was very pathetic but even worse was when DA threw 4 picks against Cincy in the most important game of his life and when i counted most! DA was a 1/2 season wonder at best!

If it happened during the election it should be documented.

Post the link so we can read it.

    Is this what you meant?

Perhaps you’ve heard. Brady Quinn introduced John McCain during a Cuyahoga County campaign stop Wednesday.

We guarantee this stirs things up in conversations among Browns players.

Romeo Crennel addressed the issue in a team meeting:

“Their politics are their politics. As long as they don’t interfere with the team … that’s my main concern, that they don’t get on a soap box in the locker room and get it going back and forth about their candidate.

“As long as he keeps it outside the building and outside the team, that’s his choice.

“If you get on a soap box and make it an issue … I told them, ‘Your poltiics is your politics. Don’t let it interfere with this team. Don’t let it interefere with your preparation.’?

Defensive captain Willie McGinest has been a conspicuous supporter of Barack Obama.

Joe Thomas attended the McCain speech with Quinn. Neither Quinn nor Thomas was available for comment today. When a writer asked Thomas on the latter’s way out to practice who he’s voting for, he smiled and kept moving.

Perhaps you have guessed that Crennel did not endorse a candidate.

“The team comes first,” he said.

Which 1/2 season do you speak of?

Was it the first half of the season with 5 multi-passing-TD games and 5 wins?

Or was it the second half of the season with 5 multi-passing-TD games and 5 wins?

Yeah that's when RAC banned political talk in the locker room

[in other words, RAC said "put a sock in it, Quinn"]

Try and contribute. That'd be greeeaaat.

  • Look guys, lets stop asking for the digging up of old stuff.

I have seen it in articles by beat writers, veiled comments etc. that at least up to this point Q isn't the A#1 in the locker room.

Those guys don't usually get punched in the mouth.

Now....what has happened in the past is just that, the past. It doesn't have any impact on the future or that Q can't become the A#1.

  • As some of you know, I'm a Realtor in Fort Lauderdale.

I just heard, BQ just bought a house down here this week.

My company also has Tim Couch's condo listing (for sale) here.

  • Riff, admittedly I haven't been on the board for the past year and I'm slowly catching up with all the banter that goes on here at the best message board in the nation---THE BROWNS BOARD...

Whats amazing to me is, while I took my sabaticle (sic) last June I did pop back on briefly toward the end of the season and it was like a soap opera... When I was a touring musician, soap operas were a staple, in that, you could miss a week or two of shows but you could get right back into the mix of things just by viewing one current show... The same seemed to apply to this board... Miss almost an entire season but when you get back it's the same ol' same ol'----Anderson vs Quinn debate......

Last season I had to be the luckiest Browns fan in the world.... I missed the entire season except for 1 quarter of the Giants game, both in the regular season and in the preseason.... I guess I must have seen the best of DA.... I did go to Berera multiple times in the summer of 2007 and to be quite truthful DA impressed the bejebbers out of me... That arm is something special... IMO its one of the best arms I've ever seen in the NFL....

Admittedly I'm a fan of DA's, I like the kid but can be quite objective toward both the good and bad in his game... On the other hand I thought that last years O cooridinator was one of the worst this organization has ever had.... When my then, nine year old grandson could predict the play that was about to be run it says volumes for the man actually calling the plays... The league didn't get a book on DA it got a book on Chud's play calling tendancies and he didn't let the league down.... When you know what play is coming chances are you'll be able to defend it quite well..... The worst player in the league was probably an All American in college and they all can play the game....

On the other hand I guess I'm old school, in that, when you draft a player in the 1st round logical thinking is that you give him every opportunity to lose the job on the field, not in practice... Quinn should have started last year in the 1st game of the season... With the concussion, DA was not at the top of his game and was a detriment to the team... Whoever called that shot should have been fired and in retrospect, he was....

What I see in Quinn is a player that can manage the game, someone who'll need multiple plays but will move the team toward the end zone and put the team in a position to score... I don't see a QB that will light it up, having big strike abilities that change the complexion of a game... I see that capability in Anderson

Although I like Anderson I still want to see Quinn in a meaningful game environment.... I want to see what he does against those damn Steelers because with the exception of Couch (speaking of the new Browns that is) we haven't had a QB that could beat them... I like Quinns atheleticism (is that a word??) he seems more fluid than DA and seems to have that certain something that all great QB's posses... The main problem is that I haven't seen enough of him to either annoint him the starter or kick him to the curb....

I'm sorry Shep, I strongly disagree with your statement that Quinn never had the chance to compete.... He was in camp for multiple seasons... Although Anderson was named the starter, Quinn was still competing for playing time and couldn't unseat DA... If the staff thought Quinn had something, wouldn't they have inserted him in the game in the 3rd or 4th quarter when Anderson was performing poorly???? Wouldn't the players have voiced their opinion when the season was going south???? Wouldn't the players have come to his defense, both vocally & physically, when Quinn got bitch slapped in the locker room????

    respectfully;

    T.Dawg
