Josh Allen - Potato Bowl game
-
Disclaimer: I really wanted to edit my original post when I referred to Allen as an "exciting prospect", but it's been quoted too many times already.
I think he's an "interesting" or "intriguing" prospect.
nfl.com- Ben Roethlisberger- or Blake Bortles. Take your pick. Browns will seriously scout him, but I doubt they would draft a "project". His completion % pales in comparison to Baker Mayfield.
Man, that Deshone Kizer can make all the throws too with his "live" arm- most of the time 10' over Gordon's head, like that beaut of an interception today. (I'll take that back, Kizer can't throw an accurate fade to the end zone). An inaccurate canon is worthless if it can't consistently hit it's target. Anyday, I'll take the guy with slightly less arm that's 10X more accurate with his passes. And I don't want to hear Mayfield is undersized- he's taller than Drew Brees and Russell Wilson.

At this point it could be said that any quaterback that has a slight flaw in his game is better than what we have (or have had during 21st century), so if he's going to miss something I prefer if he doesn't have a great arm but is accurate. Or pocket poise over athleticism. Brady is the slowest QB in the league but he knows when to take those one or two steps up in the pocket to avoid pass rush.
Allen looks like a great guy, and I like his back story, but the 2 years he has been the starter he has had a completion pct of 56, and it is more common that college QBs get from 65% to 60% in NFL than from 56% to 60%. Even Newton, who is not an accurate QB but relies on his athleticism and strong arm, had 60 and 66% in his two years as starter in college (Blinn and Auburn, respectively).

so... a great qb in college, who was a late bloomer, who doesn't have a real good cast around him,
etc etc etc...in a PRO STYLE OFFENSE THAT WENTZ PLAYED IN.... should have the better stats of
a great qb who has a terrific cast of players around him, wr's who could go to the NFL easy....in a SPREAD OFFENSE?
nope.

The difference between 50% to 60% is 10 completions per 100.
2017 Allen is @ 56% completions and 2017 Rosen @ 63% completions. A 7 completions difference per 100 and Allen is not in a pass friendly offense. Better talent around Allen might account for a 10% increase in itself.
In 3 seasons Rosen has attempted 1169 passes https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/josh-rosen-1.html
In 3 seasons Allen has attempted 630 passes. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/josh-allen-7.html I would not call Wyoming a pro style offense at all.
NFL front offices are salivating at Allens untapped potential.
I think that Rosen having a larger set of samples just proves he is more accurate. And thanks for saying that a 10% difference is 10 passes out of 100, I could have never guessed that.
The thing is that a good NFL QB is around 60% consistently during the year, and those who rank lower either compesate it with their feet or are bad QBs.
Also, about Allen's not being a pass friendly offense, check this out:
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/23/p3
Both teams are ranked next to each other in Rushing offense. I have calculated that Wyoming rushes 34,3 times per game, whereas UCLA 30,8. That's a 11% more by Wyoming, but Rosen doubles Allen's passing attempts.
That made me think that Wyoming must be a defense based team. And I was right. Wyoming's total defense is ranked 24th. UCLA's 122th. There are 129 teams ranked.
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/22/p3
And now that we are at it, Wyoming's offense is ranked 125 and UCLA 18.
I don't watch NCAA, but those stats tell me that UCLA's offense is more time on the field and sustains longer drives (they play way more snaps looking at the stats), and their defense is really bad, whereas Wyoming is a defensive team.
So, looking at that, I'd pick the guy whose team is based more on the offense (plus is a pro style offense, IIRC) than the guy who has less pass attempts, less completion %, and whose team is based more on the defense.

Not so fast. As much as I enjoy your sense of humor and your posts - you're wrong here so hear me out. You just joined this board a few months ago. Cal's been on this board since 1998 and I've never heard or seen this tale of tattling. Seems like a strange about face in character. Let's keep the Jerry Springer trash down to 1 guy in here. You're better than that Dutch!
One of the moderators mentioned him constantly sending them complaints about posts and posters...
He could have been on this board since 1898, but he's still a rat.

For the record it was NOT me.

So is Rosen playing tonight or not?
I think a bigger concern about Rosen than his personality is his ability to stay on the field.

This year, Allen threw for 16 TD's. Last year, he threw for 28. Allen lost some star players from last year. go figure, eh?
His offensive line plays really tough - but they aren't pro draft type players.-
From 2016:
Tanner Gentry WR 2017 Senior 0
Brian Hill RB 2017 Junior 0
Jacob Hollister TE 2017 Senior 0
Jake Maulhardt WR 2017 Senior 0
Chase Roullier C 2017 Senior 0
Lucas Wacha ILB 2017 Senior 0Allen lost his center, two wr's, his te, and a rb. So, how can anyone just ignore this, and go by his last year at Wyoming?
I don't know. Football is a lot more complicated that a few stats. Still led them to a bowl game this year.
We aren't experts, we don't get to sit down and interview these kids, we don't get to sit and ask them what they see on film, etc.
It's just fun, all this qb draft talk. I just want to get the right guy once and for all. and a veteran to step in would be good.

I like Josh Allen. I know many others that don't care for him. Josh will be a starting NFL QB and will thrive. I pray he doesn't go to the Browns. The Browns will draft Baker Mayfield (Manziel 2.0) first in the draft which will set the Browns back another two frustrating year.
-
I think this team may need Jesus to come play QBs.
And, by the way....see my Christmas thread. Note that the names Jesus and Joshua are literally just variants of the same name.
And "Jesus/Joshua" means, translated literally "Yahweh (God) is Salvation".
So? Are one of the Jesus/Joshuas going to be the Browns Salvation?
Or....do we have to turn to the Illuminati....who are supposedly connected to the "Masons". (Rudolph)?
-
Would Jesus count as one roster spot or three?
I'd worry about Jesus' ability to escape the rush... The Romans didn't have much trouble getting hold of him.
-
I admire qb's who don't have it all handed to them, and they still will fight the entire game, inspire the team around them, inspire the fans and the coaches... the whole college and town. and, they can really throw, and make plays work, even when they are broken plays. And smart - seeing the field. That last part is tough to gage when you project how big a step up it is when they get to the NFL.

Jesus himself would just be one spot. The other parts of the Trinity, the Father and the Holy Ghost.....can be stashed away on the Practice Squad. Being ethereal helps that.
As for Jesus being caught by the Romans....well, that was just part of the overall plan. You know....like tanking games in order to get the top draft pick.

So getting crucified was part of the Process.
Who says religion is confusing?

Exactly. Sashi Brown and Hue Jackson were actually dying for our sins. (but why does it seem like it is WE who are dying for their sins)? I guess that makes Jimmy Haslam Pontius Pilate? Perhaps we all should begin to feel more like the Pharisees or the San Hedrin.
I mean, think about it however.....We Browns fans are more actually like the Jewish people: we have suffered a Diaspora due to economic conditions that have spread us out all over the World.
....and...this era of Browns football can only be called a Holocaust.

Hue would find a way to nail him to the goal post.

Allens offensive line would get him killed if he stayed 1 more season.
Yep. He should go now. Stock will not get any better.

You implied that the jump from 56% to 60% is uncommon and could be a real mountain to climb. A grand total of 4 additional completions per 100 pass attempts. So, I do not mind pointing out to you that Its only a mole hill.
Nope. I would agree if we were talking about the same competition.
The point is that the trend is that QB's completion pct decreases from NCAA to NFL: better defenses and faster and more skillful players equals smaller windows, thus less passes completed. If the benchmark is in 60%, you can expect it to be reached easier by the guys who already put those numbers or higher in College than the ones who don't.
And if you think that's useless, the difference between 62,5 (Rosen this year) and 56,2 (Allen), 6,3% difference, means that if you took this season's Browns, with a 54,4% completions, they would have a 60,7%, thus 2 more completions per game (have an average of 36,3 pass attempts).
That would be 20 yards per game (Browns have 10yds per completion), and Browns would go 5 spots up in Pass Offense (from 26 to 21). Damn it, if the Raiders did that they would go 9 spots up in Pass Offense. To put things in perspective, the team with most Yds/G is the Pats, and have less than 100 Yds/G more than the worst team, the Bills, so 20 yards is a big chunk.

Allen is not in a pass oriented NFL offense and he is asked to run the ball which is something that NFL teams wont allow.
Allen's team has 4 more rush attempts per game than UCLA. There goes your mole hill.
