The Best Bargain Basement QB Picks

The Browns Board

  • Interesting list you have 7 in the desired top 100 group and 8 in the over 100 group of the bargain basement group since 2000.

It really shows you that value in starters or backups can come from all levels.

  • Here is a list of the Worst Bargains.    Fairly high draft picks.....little productivity.   I will put these in order of where they were taken in the draft:

    1.  Jamarcus Russell   #1 overall.   Laziest, most lackadaisical pick maybe ever

    2. David Carr  #1 overall.   At least Carr has an excuse that Russell does not:  he went to an expansion team.

    3. Robert Griffin III.  #2 overall.   Injuries partially to blame.  Also, imo, his game just did not fit the pro game

    4. Joey Harrington #3 overall.   Just not any good

    5. Vince Young  #3 overall.  Mental issues sabotaged his career

    6. Byron Leftwich  #7 overall.

    7. Matt Leinert   #10 overall.   Didn't have the mental toughness

    8. Blaine Gabbert #10 overall.  Vastly overrated and over drafted imo

    9. Christian Ponder  #12 overall.   Ditto for him as for Gabbert.

    10. EJ Manual.   #16 overall.   Thought to be the best of a bad class....maybe he was....just goes to show how bad that class was

    11. Josh Freeman  #17 overall.   Seemed like he could have had all the tools at first....then lost his way.

    12. Kyle Boller.  #19 overall.   The good thing here is that it was the Ravens that took him

    13.  #22  Overall:  Johnny Manziel;  Brandon Weeden; JP Losman;  Brady Quinn; Rex Grossman.   Moral of the story.....do NOT ever draft a fuycking QB at #22 again, particularly if you are the Browns.

    14.  Tim Tebow.  #25 overall.   Not an NFL QB

    15. Paxton Lynch  #26 overall.   Maybe a bit too early to judge?  Probably not.    A busted move.

    16. Patrick Ramsey  #32 overall.   Can anyone even remember him?

    17. JOhn Beck  #40 overall.

    18. Drew Stanton.  #43 overall.    Not a star, not a bargain... maybe a fair backup is what to expect from a #43 QB pick

    19. Pat White #44 overall.

    20. Jimmy Clausen  #48 overall.  Better of having drafted a backup OL or DB

    21. Kellen Clemens #49 overall.

    22. Brian Brohm  #46 overall   52 NFL passes

    23. Marques Tuiasosopo.  #59 overall.

Note, of course, that there seems to have been a lot more bad bargains with 1st and 2d round QB picks than there have been good bargains.

Out of 38 mentioned players both good and bad I  doubt it.

I actually really like what I saw on tape of Luis Perez, QB from Texas A&M Commerce.

I don't think he is ready to start as a rookie, but he has a strong arm, a quick release, is very accurate, smart, and cool...

Not sure I have ever even heard of him....so I guess he would be a real bargain basement guy.

    Probably a UDFA.

In my research I only looked for drafted QBs.    I have no doubt that perhaps over the last 18 years there have been some UDFA QBs that have come in and done a very nice job in the league.

I am not sure I can name them...but I suspect there are a few out there.   So if anyone else can name them...great, please do so.

Is your FMU education so deficient that you cannot read simple English?

It is about QBs who have been  drafted "later" that turned out to fairly productive, given their draft status.

I would have thought perhaps what with post #3 you may have thought it was a thread about you:   total underachievers.

  • We're shopping Nordstrom's this year.  No more trading for Walmart gift cards thank you.

  • Heath Shuler didn't make the list?  David Carr had a much better career IMO.  He even lost to Nancy Pelosi, to add insult to injury.

I only went back to the year 2000 Heath Shuler was before that but you're welcome to go back even further say to like 1950 if you wantI only went back to the year 2000 Heath Shuler was before that but you're welcome to go back even further say to like 1950 if you want

  • This is just as likely to be a Luke Falk or a Mike white thread. Or Nick Stevens or some other lower rated quarterback that actually becomes very productive in his career

That's a double negative, right? So it's sufficient?

  • This guy could wind up being one of the steals in the draft. I hadn't seen much of him until recently, and he's damn fun to watch. He makes plenty of big time throws and is a next level type of athlete.

Didn't pay attention to the parameters....my bad.

  • I'm not going to elaborate on names but since 2000, there have been 41 QBs drafted in the first round. Around 14 outright busts, 9 that underperformed (quality backups to spot starters), 10 that were quality starters, and 8 outright studs. Eli, Rodgers, Ryan, BR, Rivers....

So league wide, better than 50\50 odds you're not going to draft an outright bum qb in the first round. The Browns hit the trifecta with Quinn, Weeden, and Manziel.

Never heard of him. Why are you just now bringing him up?

I don't know about no double negative.😉  I just know that you never seem to say anything on here above the intelligence level of third grader.  Perhaps you could try to work to improve on that...if you are able.

But it is also 50/50 that you ARE going to draft an outright bum in the first round.  But yes...the Browns skew the average.
