WTF difference does that make.  I just hope the next coach can effing coach and can effing win.

D.i.c.k. Vermeil was in the media a long time...and came back and won a SB.    As for "currently a HC"   do you mean, like in college?  I do doubt that the Browns will be hiring the HC of any other current HC of an NFL team.

What if BB said:  I want to retire as HC of the NEP....in order to pursue becoming the HC of the CBs once again.

  • "I knew that was coming," Riley said during his weekly news conference. "No, not right now. You sit here and answer these questions and I always want to be truthful. The truth for me is I love Oklahoma. I love coaching here. I love college football. I certainly don't have that itch right now. Don't know that I ever will.

"But I'm never going to be a guy that stands up here and says no way, no how with any of these things ever happening. I don't know that. But I know right now I could care less about the NFL."

Of course Riley is going to tell the press that right now, he is happy where he's at. Oklahoma has an outside chance of making the playoffs and they are in the middle of the season. Ask him how he feels once the college season is over. I'd bet he'd change his tune then. Not saying I want him here. But the above means nothing.

The Phucking difference it makes is I don't want to see a regurgitated guy that couldn't cut it with another team - and probably better players, named the next new head coach of the Cleveland Browns.... Pretty self explanatory, or so I thought anyway.

The ONLY thing that is explanatory about your statement is that you want to eliminate a whole category of potentially successful coaches that could come here....for some idiotic personal whim.  Certainly NOT out of any logic.

ALL of the following were retread coaches....each of whom won a Super Bowl as a "retread":

Bill Belichick,   Gary Kubiak,  Pete Carroll, Tom Coughlin, Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, D.i.c.k. Vermeil, Mike Shanahan, Don Shula, Weeb Ewbank.

All of the following took their teams to Super Bowls in at least their second gig as an HC, even if they didn't win:

John Fox,  Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves, Marv Levy, Forrest Gregg, John Rauch, Bill Parcells,

So....fuyck that.   there are 17 names above of "retread coaches"  that have taken their second team to a Super Bowl...win or lose.

So, no, it is not self explanatory ...it is pretty damn dumb.

I am not saying that the Browns should hire a retread....but I am saying that NO ONE should be eliminated just because he was a prior HC in the league.  That would be foolish.

Here is to hoping that whomever they get can win. No matter what his status.

And no need to respond in depth....there is nothing you can say that would/could be  persuasive or intelligent on this subject.

I mean, think about it...why on earth would anyone have ever given Bill B.  a second chance after his failed stint here?

    I did.....

I just asked which  17 coaches that either won or took their team to the Super Bowl did so as "retreads" in that they were on their second head coaching job.

You failed miserably.   (and your breath smells like you have been sucking d.i.c.k........Vermeil?)

Because his stint wasn't failed.  The team improved each of the first 4 years and made the playoffs and won a game in the playoffs.   As the history professor around here you know that the 95 team was good as well and probably on the way to the playoffs again but once the move was announced the season went into the shitter.

I say no to any "retread" coach who has already won a super bowl somewhere else.   They don't win again somewhere else...they just don't.  Some get close but they don't win again in a new place.

As for a head coach who was good somewhere else and for whatever reason things went downhill and was fired, I'm not totally opposed to it but wouldn't be my preference.  I think a young coordinator who is hungry to take that step up to be the HC would be my choice.   I have no idea who this guy is, but that's my preference.

Well, I think you prove my point.  I think, objectively, it appears that BBs time here was a failure.   He had 4 losing seasons out of the 5 he was here.....but as you say.... subjectively you could see the team was improving....and made the playoffs, and may have continued to get better if not for the stupidity of Modell.

If there were a BB type "retread" out there, I would not just dismiss him out of hand simply because he had coached before.....as apparently D Bone would do.  And maybe that young hungry coordinator IS the way to go.

All I am saying is that there is no justification to eliminate any potential candidate simply because of some arbitrary status he may hold, be that former HC, college HC,  age,  whether he coach offense, or defense, etc.  etc.

Unless he's already won a super bowl somewhere else because it doesn't happen again with a different franchise.

He was a name thrown out by someone on NFL network yesterday as a long shot candidate because of his ties to Dorsey and if the Packers decided to move on from him.  Lots of ifs and everything is just speculation and rumors at this point.   Hell, it could be Gregg Williams team again next year for all we know.

It could have, easily.  If not for referree intervention, Holmgren could have had a title in Seattle as well as Green Bay.

Six coaches have taken two teams to Super Bowls with 2 different teams:

Don Shula,  lost 1 with Colts,  won 2 lost 3 with the Dolphins

Dan Reeves,  lost 3 with Broncos and lost 1 with Falcons

Bill Parcells, won 2 with Giants,  lost 1 with Pats

Holmgren,  won 1 lost 1 with Packers, lost 1 with Seattle

finger Vermeil,   lost 1 with Eagles, won 1 with Rams

John Fox,  lost 1 with  Panthers and lost 1 with Denver

What you may be saying actually is.....if you hire a coach that has appeared in a Super Bowl.....make sure he lost it .....as coaches that lost have had more success the second time around, where no one who has won has ever come back to win again:  Shula and Vermeil came back to win with a new team, having lost and not won with a previous team.

So, that could mean we could consider these......who have lost SBs but not won: Fox, Jim Caldwell, Ken Whisenhunt, Lovie Smith, Bill Callahan, Mike Martz, Jim Fassell, Jeff Fisher, Bobby Ross, Sam Wyche, etc.  😉

lmao....Riley makes over 5 million a year now and is likely to bump up to 6.5-7 shortly if they make the playoff.....he proably wouldnt even take the Browns HC ob if offered.  The idea that he is going to go from a perfect HC situation at OU to a coordinator job anywhere in the nfl is absurd.

And tell me how or when I remotely said he would? I swear to God, some of you mofos just love posting dramatic crap because you love how panties feel bunched up in your butt.

Yes wise guy I understand he wouldn't take an OC job. I was simply stating that ideally I'd want to see Riley succeed offensively in the NFL like McVay did before taking the plunge. We've seen too many wonder coaches from the NCAA ranks (Chip Kelly anyone?) fall flat on their faces. I don't think the Browns can afford to take that risk.

ummm...so whats the point of posting that then? Since there is no chance in hell he would ever go that path now....at least you should have phrased it "I WOULD HAVE wanted....."

  • And a possibility to come back to Cleveland?

Seems like I just heard the talking heads on the radio say they loved him in Minnesota.

My exact quote is " I'd want to see Riley start as an OC in the NFL at least a year before jumping head first into that situation. " Perhaps you never learned about contractions in school, but "I'd" in that sentence means "I would". Grammar is fun!

The point is provide a counterargument to a popular opinion on a head coach as conversation on a football forum. Hey bud, nice try though.
