Again, Dak will be FA....he may get rid of them.   Unless they want to tag him again.

Does Dak have leverage next season?  He may have some doubts as other teams have doubts on him coming back healthy next year and or having lingering effects of the injury the following year.  Name a team looking for a QB are you anchoring yourself to 35-40M plus a year on that?  If you recall he didn’t want to sign for more than 4 years.   I think Dallas is most likely team to take a gamble and it may not be as rich of a contract.

Yes... because he's a UFA. Whenever you control where you sign... you have leverage.

Plus I guarantee you that after the failed 2020 contract negotiations Dak feels no allegiance to DAL.

    Two things...

    1. Word is that Dak is already ahead of schedule in his recovery/rehab which was only 4 - 6 months long. It's almost been two months since the injury.
    2. Teams have medical staffs to evaluate the soundness of players, but with the above timetable staffs should be able to see for themselves how well the recovery went.

Even then the contract base may not be as rich as it once was... unless it's another tag by DAL which is set by rule. Problem is that if you look at DAL's 2021 cap-space you can see that is not really an option. They have an unbelievable $92mm in 2021 dead money tied up in three players... Cooper, Elliot and Lawrence.

Teams that want to hedge a little can use incentive clauses and even option years. So a team can commit to invest as little as $20mm or so while offering a package that hits $30+mm/yr.

  • I think Rivers might hang 'em up, retire. He's got a bad case of turf toe that requires surgery.

He's had a pretty fine career, not a lot of playoff success of course. The Colts took a flyer on him, its kind of worked out with 4 to play.

Rivers has been a fantastic QB

I understand he’s an UFA.  He’s coming off of a serious injury going into the UFA.  this is ideal...never.

He’s coming back...I get it ...is he right? When he moves in the pocket is he thinking about stepping up in the pocket and getting that ankle rolled on.  For a guy that doesn’t want to be locked into something long termish it’s a risk

My opinion... I would think his current team is likely more willing to assume the risk- he knows the system, the team, etc.

ill be surprised if he’s on another team next year

  • I assumed you knew he was a UFA. Just don't understand how that translates into "no leverage".

I'll be surprised if Dak stays put. I'm watching another team play tonite where he's be a welcome addition. I believe the team's HC is named Belichick.

Dak's a tough competitor. Any apprehension he might have, which IMO will be little to none, will disappear when he gets off the turf after his first contact.

  • Of course if Dak's watching the game he's likely to say, "Thanks for the interest, Bill, but no thanks. I can get beat up in Dallas."

  • @tour2ma said:

Pretty much agree with your takes based upon on-field performance, but that's not the only consideration, i.e., $$$. For example:

    • Ryan inked an extension in 2019. Cut would be very expensive... in the area of $50mm... so can't see him going anywhere.
    • at about $10mm Darnold and Foles are relatively cheap axes, but can their teams even afford that much against their caps?
    • Trubs would add another $9mm to CHI's tab.

I think Brady's decision will be set by how TB finishes. Anything less than a SB win and I see him back.

Most interesting name is Dak because it's not just up to the team. Why would he stay in DAL?SF is a helluva lot closer to being title competitive than DAL.

Marcus Spears was asked yesterday on NFL Live about where Dak might go and without hesitation he said SF. That seems like a great match to me and dumping Jimmy G costs less than $3mm. They may like Jimmy, but a healthy Dak is an obvious upgrade and it's not like Jimmy is or has been healthy.

Finally if you are da 'Boyz, how do you pay Dak $35+mm via a 2nd tag to keep him for one more year?

Then that begs the question:    Where do the Cowboys turn?   I don't think they are going to cast their fortunes with Andy Dalton.

Dallas is going to  suck bad enough to be in the draft a QB derby. They're currently 4th (actually 3rd, because the Bengals aren't drafting a QB).

PS- a brief perusal of  the Rams- Patriots game, I'd add  Cam Newton to the "done" list.

  • If the draft order stays as is? Let's just say the draft could start at pick #2... Does QB Gardner Minshew look like a NFL Starting QB or a Back-up QB?

Buckeyes QB Justin Fields could be a Jags pick? or  LT Penei Sewell could be chosen to protect Minshew's future? (Jags LT Cam Robinson rookie deal expires after 2020 season)

As of now...Jags sit on #2 pick...Cowboys #4 pick... Eagles #6 pick... Atlanta #8 pick.. Denver #10 pick...

The Jags could receive a Sashi butt-load of rebuilding picks while passing on Justin Fields?.. Minshew  a) could be traded on his rookie deal until 2023? b,) Kept as Fields starting competition?

Should we, Fear the Stache  is done in Jacksonville? ?

Edit--The smallest untold story in Greenville,NC?   1.) The ECU Pirates hired a new Athletic director.. 2.)Walked in the door & fired former Pirate player and Than ECU Head Coach Ruffin McNeill.. 3.) To open the door for than QB Garner Minshew to transfer from ECU to Washington State.. $4.) Sooners HC Lincoln Riley was Ruffin's/Minshew's Offensive Coordinator.... ?‍♂️ ?

Carson wentz might be done in Philly

Yea, he was a major one I forgot.

I think of all places pittsburgh might be a good landing spot for wentz. I don't think he's so far gone that he can't be salvaged and that would providev him a chance to regroup and study under an elite qb who has to be eyeing retirement soon but not quite yet.

  • Well C. Wentz isn't done in philly, the EAGLES owe him way too much money, so they are stuck with him all next year weather he plays or stands on the sidelines. The Lions might be done with M. Stafford but who know's what will happen. And its basicly the same with all QB's mentioned. Are the big names worth keeping as starters?

    Both Fair statements.

As I see it though, there are really only 2 plums in this upcoming draft:   Lawrence and Fields......unless there is someone else there that is considered a Top  3-5 QB candidate.

So, both Dallas AND New England may in the "draft a QB" mode.

I think the Jags have been in the Tank for Trevor mode for 2 years.   Problem is that the Jets have just been a worse team.

So, no.  I think they go for Fields if  Trevor is not there.

And actually, I think the Jets should be considering a trade of that #1 pick.....where they would get at minimum like  2 First rounders, 2 seconds and 2 3rds.   They have a pile of needs...and that trade could/should/would help them tremendously in rebuilding.

  • The Jags should see what they could get for the #2 overall pick.

I'm sorry, I just don't see Justin Fields as a good NFL QB.

    Um... wow.

  • Don’t forget the Osweiler plus high pick strategy  to rid oneself of a bad contract.  And how could we- didn’t it net us Nick Chubb

Maybe it comes back into play this offseason

I want to say that the NFL closed this "cash for player" loophole as they did the straight cash for player(s) "trades" that were common in the mid-1900s.

Aside: Man was it strange to type "mid-1900s"... Now I feel old and in need of a nap.

That is akin to saying "that war back in the early 60's" just after WW I. Now you can really feel olzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz?

    Six decades ago.
