Why We Need A Qb

The Browns Board

  • you do not need a great QB to get there... Flaco, Yates, Tebow, A. Smith. If stephen hawkings could coach a footaball team their offense would be awesome...our running backs would run into a black hole and shoot out a worm hole for a TD.

Do you see the correlation on the other side of the coin?

The only real exception here is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who do not have an outstanding O-line but DO boast a dominant defense and a consistent running game, year in and year out. On top of that, if anyone is going to take a pounding and get back up, its Ben Rothlisberger. But tbh the kind of preotection Rothlisberger has gotten historically has probably already taken years off of his career. Look at teams like Denver and NY whose QBs arent as good as Colt, and you see that they have fantastic defenses and running games. Speaking of running games, look at Atlanta. I could go on. Something always has to give. Right now, the QB is not the area that needs to take precedence.

The same Colts with the same O Line and without Peyton Manning and an unproven QB = worst team this year. Im sorry buddy, while ur points are good you are undervaluing the need for a franchise QB a lot.

  • This thread would have been more apt if the title was why we need a FRANCHISE QB.

Payton would have loved to have had anything even closely resembling a running game. But yes, Payton is the huge difference maker there. I will give you that. I am not seriously undervaluing the need for a "Franchise QB", I just think that what most people see when they think of one is the physical ability and they undervalue many of the other characteristics that make a QB successful and worthy of building a franchise around. Furthermore, several people are deluded into thinking that a QB can do it all by himself and even go so far as to discredit and insult the supporting casts of offensive players and defensive personnel that make a huge difference in the way a QB is able to play the game. I think Colt can be a great QB, thats how much I believe in him, but he isnt being given much help or time to get the train moving.

  • You pay the mortgage, then the insurance.

For a QB to excel, he needs a solid line. With that said, the only two positions on the line that should be addressed in the first round are LT and C. (for a right handed QB). We have addressed those positions. We are a bookend tackle away from having a very solid line, but that tackle does not need to be found in the first round. That is a waste of a pick.

And, as of this moment, we have no franchise QB to protect anyway.

Also, a big part of what makes that team so epically sheisty is their defense. Bad.

Having too many solid offensive linemen is a great problem to have, first of all. Second of all, you dont have to draft a lineman in the first, you can draft another offensive skill player. Lastly, I respectfully disagree with you in regard to Colt and whether or not he is a "Franchise QB". I think he needs more time and you should address other positions. If the best player available on the board is RGIII and you bring him into to compete, then good. But I think you have a ton of other holes to fill.

They have a mediocre D. They always did, but they expect the offense to score. They are not build to create turnovers ..... just protect the lead.

I agree that you can never have enough solid linemen. We are one away from having a very solid line, spending more than one pick on OL would be wasteful.

As for Colt, he's shown his stuff. He's serviceable, but he'll never be a franchise QB.

At this point, it's either surround Colt with a bunch of talent so he can put up slightly better but still mediocre numbers, or get a franchise guy that can win with the players we have.

Mathematically, it makes the most sense just to draft/sign a QB.

  • A good QB makes those around him plamakers.

    Hines Ward- 3rd round pick.

    Emmanuel Sanders-3rd round pick.

    Mike Wallace- 3rd round pick.

    Antonio Brown- 6th round pick.

    Ben Roethlisberger- 1st round pick

    James Jones- 3rd round pick.

    Donald Driver-7th round pick

    Jordy Nelson- 2nd round pick

    Randall Cobb- 2nd round pick

    Aaron Rodgers- 1st round pick

    Pierre Garcon- 6th round pick

    Reggie Wayne- 1st round pick

    Austin Collie- 4th round pick

Anthony Gonzalez- 1st round pick. (hurts my argument a tad, but I'm presenting all the facts)

    Peyton Manning- 1st round pick

And then there's the Patriots, with no 1st round picks at QB or WR. What they do have, however, is two first round and two second round Offensive Linemen. (Thats for you, Ghoolie)

Thank you, this is my point!!!! How did Colt make his WR look this yr and last...

WOW thats 2 post I agree with, maybe there is hope for Browns fans to have a good head on there shoulders when it come to the Browns. I have Witnessed 3 so far...

Hey lets draft a O-lineman with a 4th pick, because then we could have a really good o-line with shit playmakers that still can not score....GET the FUCK out OF here!!!

Fair enough. Though OL are not dime a dozen as some on here contend, a third round pick for a RT or RG should be a sufficient investment.

At best a 2d rounder when you have 2 first round picks that can be applied to other positions of need, like LB, WR, DB, maybe RB or QB

  • you do not need a great QB to get there... Flaco, Yates, Tebow, A. Smith. If stephen hawkings could coach a footaball team their offense would be awesome...our running backs would run into a black hole and shoot out a worm hole for a TD.

I agree completely. First rounders are spent on LT and C. RT can be addressed in the second or third. Guards can be addressed whenever, mostly.

Of the eight QB's in the playoffs at this very moment:

5 were first round draft picks

Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Eli Manning

One was a second round pick.

    Drew Brees

(However, Brees was taken with the 32nd pick in the draft, so by today's standards he would be a first rounder as well.)

One was a third round pick

    Matt Schaub

And the other is Tom Brady.

I don't understand the point you are trying to make.

  • Something all you guys are ignoring is the 15+ QBs since '99

There is absolutely no reason to think that one more first round guy is the answer

Draft position does not denote talent in the nfl

Best guard in the league was a 5th round pick

Reigning MVP was a 6th round pick

    Most consistent WR went undrafted

Don't pretend like the reason you need a QB is because colt isn't a first round pick

    Don't be that dumb

You are clearly being the dumb one. Look at those players in the HOF. Look at who is named Pro Bowl, look at who is named All Pro. A greater percentage of the players designated as such come from the first round of the draft....and it goes down incrementally from there a you get to players in the lower rounds.

Yes, you are going to find the exceptions. Yes you will find a Brady in the 6th round....but you will need a first rounder to find a Manning, a Rodgers, a BR, a Flacco, a Ryan, a Newton, a Freeman, a Palmer, a Rivers etc. etc. etc.
