Is Brandon Weeden A Franchise Quarterback?

The Browns Board

Excuse me? Where is all this talent Weeden had last year compared to what McCoy had?? That statement baffles me...

Weeden was throwing the ball to (deep inhale) a rookie who didn't even have a training camp, a 2nd year guy who couldn't hold onto a ball until late in the year, another rookie who is raw as ever and ran imprecise routes and was oft injured, the same TE - just one year older, Cribbs??? who never developed into a real WR, and let's see... who else... ohh ya Norwood - they both had him, he's okay as a depth guy. Talk about RB... Richardson, who Weeden was throwing to was injured the whole year compared to McCoy who was throwing to Hillis who caught every damn ball near him and turned it up field for 10 yards... The O-line is basically a wash as both QBs had equally sufficient time in the pocket. Did I miss something?? None of Weeden's "talent" around him was anywhwere near developed last season. Hopefully a full training camp, with two REAL coaches teaching them offense will help these guys develop. But, all-in-all, I can't believe this argument still exists...

    just sayin'

you're comparison of TR and hillis is laughable. the only wr he had was massaqua and we all know he wasn't a number one. watson was his only real target. litlle played scared.

i'm not saying mccoy was ever our guy. but to all those conspiracy theorists there was never an open and fair competition between the 2. something that might come back to bite this FO in the future.

weeden is our guy and i'll stand behind him, that is until he throws 5 pick 6's through 4 games and then i'll be revving up the 'get him the fuck out of town!!' train.

    Hillis in 2010 with McCoy

    270 carries, 1177 yds, 11 TDs

    61 catches 477 yds, 2 TDs

    Richardson in 2012 with Weeden

    267 carries, 950 yds, 11 TDs

    51 catches, 367 yds, 1 TD

    So, Weeden got

    227 less rushing yds

    10 less catches

    110 less receiving yards

    1 less TD

I'm not comparing their talent or potential, just the stats. So, it's laughable b/c it's true???

you got me there, no doubt.

i just think (and it sure looked it)weedem's offensive weapons were much more skilled and played better (esp. little) than anyone ever did for mccoy. hell at least our wideouts showed some separation from defenders which was never there the previous 2 years.

Weeden is a 1970's QB. He runs like he has a piano on his back. The game has passed by guys like Weeden. Nowadays, you can throw like Unitas or Namath, but you'd better be able to move better than them. Weeden is slow on foot and in the helmet. (But he has a cannon of an arm... LOL)

Flacco is more athletic than he gets credit for, but yes...good point. At the end of the day, being a QB is still about the arm.

  • hoorta i have no problem with colt being gone. i have no problem with anyone getting the axe or getting acquired as long as they help the browns win.

my problem is with these FO guys )now and in the past) especially banner and to some degree chud who said (and it's documented):

    1. we will not add another QB to the roster before training camp to compete

    2. we will not get rid of any QB before training camp

i know biz is biz but shut your fucking hole if you know it's a bold faced lie, because people will remember what you said and will call you on it at a later date.

and knowing that he/they said those things and actually did both of those things without an explanation or a retraction from their earlier statements pisses me off. i just hate shady people. and banner is starting to look like one to me.

of course norv and chud and banner have way more experience than anyone here when it comes to player personnel decisions. all i ask is that they just take a course in public speaking. cuz a lot of these guys would have failed as politicians getting caught in the old 'mis-speak' game.

and as for the quiff versus doofus debates......glad i wasn't here for that.

Peace, Mik. I see where you're coming from in that regard. Stuff like that obviously bothers you a lot more than it does me. I happen to agree with you about Banner- looks like a weasel, and speaks with forked tongue. My feeling is circumstances can make a liar out of you. Heck, the whole pre-draft hoopla is nothing more than lies and deliberate misinformation- no?

I wouldn't call ditching Colt addition by subtraction, but the Browns are certainly no worse off @ qb now than they were a few months ago. 🙂

Don't be jackasses. You're looking at Peyton Hillis' stats from 2010 the year Colt was a rookie with no reps with the starting team until the Pittsburgh game. Weeden had the #3 overall pick of the draft and future probowler in Trent Richardson, for god's fucking sake you bunch of sad sacks, Trent ran all season with broken ribs while Peyton sat out because he was "sick", pulled hammy, ect., ect... I supported the shit out of Hillis in 2010 but the dude couldn't hold a candle to what Trent Richardson brings when he's in the game. Learn your football... you "little lombardys".

I almost forgot... Weeden also knew that he would be the starting QB from day 1 simply from where he was picked in the draft. He took all the reps. Don't even try to compare Weeden's situation with Colt's, it's ubsurd.

I think you guys are being a bit prejudiced towards Banner. From what I've heard from the guy he's been pretty straight foward, sure you get your typical NFL charade but they all do that. I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, sure he looks like a nerdy beady eyed jew, but I won't hold that against him.

I can't recall them ever stating they wouldn't add any new QB's, in fact the whole time since this new staff took over they've been saying they would, not directly but in that they never verbally committed to Weeden nor gave him much if any praise... so that tells you all you need to know.

Hillis had a hell of a year in 2010 but he blew his load and that's the best you are ever going to see from him.

You would expect Richardson to outperform Hillis' 2010 stats multiple times during his career, hopefully starting this season.

About the main topic, what exactly is a franchise Quarterback? Someone who can wins you games with his arm alone? Sure Weeden has the potential to be that, but he's 29 and you need more than just a QB - hell I think the standards have been raised on franchise QB's anyhow, in todays game you need the arm and the feet, e.g,Rodgers,Luck,Newton,RG3 ... the Mannings and Bradys are a dying breed.

Was Joe Montana a franchise QB? imo no... He was an excellent system QB with a great supporting cast, Marino was a franchise QB with no supporting cast.

Right... both inexperienced quarterbacks thrown into new systems, for a reigning 4-12 or 5-11 team, that lacks offensive playmakers at all positions, and with some of the worst offensive coaching I've ever seen...

    Just absurd to compare...

New lifestyle meaning being in the NFL, and having more money than he ever did before. Just leading the life of a pro athlete. I know he was a minor league baseball player, but that is different imo.

I would agree. But we also had a head coach who was forcing a ridiculous outdated offensive system on a QB that it didn't fit. I'm willing to give Weeden another season with Norv coaching him. If he doesn't get it this year and play considerably better, he's never going to get it.
