Or, the guy that they want is still coaching (well, coordinating) in the playoffs and we won't announce until after their team is out.

That's the more reasonable conclusion. Everyone that the Browns are reported to like has a team still playing.

Hearing this makes me laugh. There are only 32 of these jobs on earth. The candidates have been coaching for most of their lives, with the dream being one of these jobs. Yes, maybe your over-rated, look at me coaches like Gruden won't want to coach a team in transition, but for 95% of the other candidates out there, THEY are hoping their phone rings and the Browns are on the other end.

  • We wont get a good hire. Face it - we are the least attractive HC job in the NFL right now - with a FO that will fire you immediately if you dont win in year 1.

That's not all that bad, work for 1 get paid for 3-5.

Malzahn might not wanna leave what he has at auburn tho.

Right. Having two replacements already in place after Black Monday is really an aberration.

O'Brien got in because he is a college coach of a team with no bowl game, and Lovie is in because he took a year off.

And then you have the "Burned Out Boys": Billick/Cowher/Gruden.

They each got their ring and their cushy TV job.....but you know what none of those guys will ever get if they never come back to coaching: Hall of Fame recognition. Tony Dungy will get his because of his status as the first SB winning HC that was black. (but really his creds beyond skin color are no better than the Burn Out Boys.) Shanahan/Holmgren/Belichick/Coughlin have more HOF cred than those guys.

Well, you've convinced me. I can't wait for Pat Shurmur part 2.

I doubt that. A coach with just enough ego will see that 10 games were lost this year when the Browns were ahead or tied at the half, with performance getting ever worse down the line. If there is a coach who has the skills to match the ego, he'll think (and will) do better with the same team. Then there's the upcoming draft picks and cap space to work with to boot.

Sounds about right to me. Personally I would love it if Cowher would come here as HC and have success.

reall dude? How many coaches have we watched the past couple years flatly turn us down and we have to end up with someone barely any of us has ever heard of. This is ridiculous. Stop it with this fantasy that there's established coaches beating down the door to coach the Browns. There isn't. They know that even at good franchises the coaching staffs turn over eveyr couple of years. Chud just got 10.5m from the Browns......he could sit on a beach in St. Martens for the next 10 years just off that buyout. Do you get that most of these even mid tier coaches have millions and millions of dollars? McDaniels probably made the same from his short stint in Denver and is probably still making a decent penny with NE. YOu think he's beating down the door to be the Browns HC? You're kidding yourself. YOu don't understand how low this organization is looked at right now. The people who want this job are low D1 coaches or D2 guys that know if they can land a job even with a shitty organization like the Browns that they're set for life. One contract and these guys can live the good life. We're simply not an attractive destination for a coach that wants to win.

  • god, Malzahn has the opportunity to win a national championship and build an SEC dynasty for years to come.....why on earth do any of you even conceive that someone in his position would come to the Browns? He's in a position to make an Urban Meyer like run at Auburn but he's going to drop that for a job in the NFL that will ruin his name and then he'll be lucky to land a d2 job? Y'all just trollin right?

nope...the guys with the big boy pants on were the ones who settled in to watch a new regime stay and rebuild for a couple years. We were the ones ok for now with the team losing, because we knew this is gonna take time. It was the whiny poosies like you that apparently the FO listened to. You don't build an elite foundation in one year, this is clear...not in the NFL. Mid way through next year, when they fire the coach midseason......ill remind you to pull your big boy pants. up.

ok...i'm stupid. You're right. The way to win games in the NFL is to change coaching staff every year. After all this how all the perennial winners in the NFL do it right? RIGHT????? Yes....i'm the stupid one you're totally right.

Auburn's gonna pay him more anyway, he doesn't need to ruin his relationship with the AD in Auburn to get them pay him more.

  • Only 32 positions, sure, but there's a limited number of coaches even remotely qualified as well. And out of that pool it gets narrowed down to who the FO's like and who fits within their organization. It works both ways.

There are likely plenty of the available candidates that look at it like you lay it out. Those are they guys I don't want. Those to me are guys that just want every piece already in place so they can come in as a figurehead and coast to the appearance of being good coaches. There are other candidates that welcome a challenge. Guys that want a chance to take their game and career to the next level. Guys that can see beyond the media bashing and understand the talent we have already and the immense opportunity we have to bolster that via 7 top 4 round draft picks and plenty to spend in free agency.

I think for some of those guys the biggest obstacle will be convincing them they can actually run the football teams day to day operations as opposed to Banner and Lombardi.
