Royal over Winslow

The Browns Board

  • Here's why the trade of Winslow and the selection of Royal is a very good move for the Browns. Winslow was a receiving TE and a oft injured one at that. He was a penality machine also. I loved Winslow's heart on the field but the Brown's offense wouldn't be suited for him as a #1 TE.

Cleveland wants to feature running the ball with a blocking TE (Heiden/Royal) and 2 or 3 wide. What some call dink and dump, others call a WCO. You will see a lot of slants and out routes and crossing routes which Quinn can throw well out of 3 step drops. The TE will be a check down.

We now have the blocking TEs to run the offense they want and also have Rucker to bring along as a TE or slot receiver in some spread formations.

And the best reason is that Winslow wants a new contract because he knows his knees and cronic shoulder problem aren't going to make it too much longer. So, we are minus his salary and pick up a 2nd round draft pick which should be a starter in a position of need.

As much as some here love Winslow's attitude, heart and hands, this team is being built with draft picks for the long run and Winslow wasn't going to be around for the long run.

Winslow was Quinn's lifeline. Spin it how you like, but you know it doesn't look good for the Queenster.

Kudos for coming up with some half-cocked reason to believe they're gearing up for a slant-based O to suit Quinn's dump-it-off-quick-and-short playing style. Just don't get your hopes up.

It's called a West Coast Offense which is a hell of a lot better then "throw it deep into coverage" Anderson and hope.

Don't worry about how you will miss seeing him. At his height you will get a good shot of him holding the clipboard.

    Lifeline....................LOL

Nobody calls anything about the Browns a west coast offense except for the BQ Lovers who are trying to explain why he dumps it off to Harrison or Winslow when Braylon is wide open for a first down.

Winslow averaged 6 catches for 75 yards in the games Quinn started and Winslow played in.

Winslow averaged 5 catches for 62 yards in the games DA started and Winslow played in from 07-08.

Not much of a difference, especially considering that Winslow had one extreme outlier in the games Quinn started (10 catches in Buffalo.) They have almost exactly the same yards per catch, 12.4 for DA and 12.5 for Quinn. Yeah, what a safety net Winslow was for Quinn.

Looks like the one spinning it would be Lumberg.

Some call it a form of WCO offense and some call it dink and dunk. Either way it is a form of offense that brings consistency. Tom Brady is a great example of a QB who thrives in a similar offense. He is able to use wide outs and guys like Patrick Pass and the like to move the chains regardless of who his "high profile" (if any) recievers/TEs were. It is not a weak attack as some LOVE to make it out to be...it is a style/system.

Get pissed Lums...DA doesn't fit that mold so clearly it is 100000% wrong in the NFL.

  • mangini comes from the belichek bold, theres no way he'll keep the same air it out offense we had the last 2 years. Anderson is done here, and it'll be either BQ or a signed vet taking over this season.

  • Read this on Rotoworld:

New Browns TE Robert Royal is expected to spend "over 90 percent" of his time on the field as a blocker.

The Browns plan to not throw to Royal, but it isn't like they have many options at the moment. They need serious help in the receiving game. Royal might see 2-3 targets a week, but the plodding TE will be a poor bet for yardage.

    Excellent thing to release...

Now instead of telegraphing the pass with K2 lined up, we will be telegraphing the run with Royal lined up...
