Good points about the defensive line Cal.

Where Cal went - Danny, Nate, Coop. I'll take it a step further and toss in Nassib.

I feel they would present our best combination of talent and youth. Meder, Hughes, Bryant and Ogbo being proper backups.

    Good topic.

Really like the idea of you mentioning Hortons defense. I believe there will be some surprises come Aug of who's on the roster and who isn't.

What is intriguing about the defense is the safety position. You guys know more about the Browns than I do so I'll continue reading.

Agreed! Change is gonna come off that edge; and it won't be by accident.

There is no substitute for experience, so a lot of these guys already learned what they need to do to be more consistent performers. Danny? Pad height, which can be partially solved by losing weight and getting into better shape. If you've ever blocked somebody that didn't have good endurance late in a sustained drive or in a game - it's not uncommon for them to surrender leverage with sloppy pad heights. David doesn't even need a sling shot to kick Goliath's ass. Our coach would always remind us, "You want to know why you run all those sprints and hills? Look where and why we're taking over this game at crunch time." Losing some of the pus gut will also help Danny bend better. And like Cal pointed out, you can't have your defensive girth running wind sprints on and off the field every other play like the staff did last year. Imagine sprinting 45 yards to the 4 yard line so you can get in a stance out of breath to face Nick Mangold plus an OG. This ain't high school in Eastern PA.

I know Rex Ryan gets silly sometimes so when he compared Demario Davis to Ray Lewis - it was obviously a stretch. That said, he's a productive, experienced LB that explains why Rex felt so cozy with his reliability. The other ILB spot should have a pretty good competition for Kirksey. I don't know how soon either of these guys emerge and where Horton sees them in terms of inside or outside but I'm intrigued to see what Wright and Schobert do. Schobert looks like he has vanilla chocolate twitchies in that video of him dunking a basketball as well as some of his highlights blitzing passers. Not bad instincts either.

The thing that jumped out at me most when I watched highlights of Nassib and Wright was how frequently they stripped the ball loose from QBs/RBs/Receivers. You can flip a lot of field position with that.

Only three years a go we talked about our secondary being the strength of the D. My, how times change...

Now, if we have a strength, it appears to be in the DL, but even that is not a given.

And we play a 3-4... where the strength has to be the LB group. A strength not threatened since??? 1999?

Elephant spot. He'll be coached on playing a 2pt LB spot. However I'm sure he'll be brought along slowly so I'd expect him to get looks at the 3pt as well.

Thanks! Don't worry about how much you know or don't know - that never stops Ghoolie. He must think the day he finally gets something right - the mods are going to give him a new pair of blue jeans with the front pockets cut out so he can take inventory every time he thinks about Ben Roethlisberger.

Interesting point about Safety being a position of intrigue for you. If Horton got his NFL Diploma from the LeBeau Institute of Defense - Safety will definitely be a position to watch. TJ Ward made the Pro Bowl here in 2013 when Horton was the DC. Back in Pittsburgh, Pollyneedsahaircut used to frequent Pro Bowls in a zone blitz scheme that counted on him to be their gridiron chess Queen attacking from anywhere, advertised or unadvertised.

The Browns Safety position is so young. I was looking for them to pick up a vet during FA. Either a star emerges or they get burnt. Better have some pressure is all I can say.

They signed a 26 year old veteran Free Safety - Rahim Moore. That doesn't change the experience level at Strong Safety though.

Someone brought up moving Mingo to Safety before. That can be a bad idea and it can be a good idea. The worry with putting him in the back tier of defense is he's not a very good tackler for a few reasons: 1) he's got the instincts of a raccoon crossing a highway at night time, 2) has piss poor fundamentals (partly from playing through a painful shoulder injury and partly from not being in enough control to square up to form tackle people, 3) he doesn't always keep his head up in pursuit often leading to over-pursuit or vulnerability to change of direction. A lot of his issues can be solved with coaching, repetition, and weekly preparation for tendencies...

The positive is he's got long levers to go with his 6'4" frame and ideal fitness which could all come in handy in coverage. He's always hustling, which shows me a work ethic an innovative mind coordinating our defense might be able to tap. Oh yeah, back to a zone blitz scheme that likes to blitz it's Strong Safety in a variety of ways ranging from x-stunts to delayed x-stunts to an anticipated vulnerable gap of a protection up front your central intelligence/coaching staff identified preparing for an offense's tendency. One of the best blitzes I ever saw from Mingo was a delayed x stunt from the outside and as soon as the OG locked up on someone - Mingo closed at the speed of light and sacked the QB.

Why all that? I thought I remembered hearing Horton say he had a different plan for Mingo this year than he had the last time. It could be that kind of thinking outside the box that puts Mingo at SS. The Dick LeBeau defense not only loves to blitz the SS, but he also likes his SS to camp out in the box after the snap.

On the other hand, Mingo finally bulked up to about 260 lbs this off-season so he might have Taylor Mays'd himself out of any thoughts of playing Safety. Stay tuned...

    Ogbah. A 6'4" 273 lbs. with 4.63 40 speed & 35 1/2" arms. That's a wingspan. I like it in either point..

If Mingo plays anywhere in the secondary ill be watching that's for sure. Lol ya you may be right he just might be going there.

I think Mingo needs stability so if they do put him back there keep him back there. Mingo has been thru a lot of different coaches. Of course I say "back there" in reference to where SS would usually play but with Horton its a new deal.

  • Here's a look at our roster on Defense heading into training camp where we can expect good competition for starting jobs, situational roles, and active roster spots. I'll apologize in advance for the crappy job I did with specifying what roles I see for some guys.

    Defensive Line:

    Danny Shelton DT/NT

    Jamie Meder DT/NT

    John Hughes III DT

    Xavier Cooper DE/5 Tech

    Desmond Bryant DE/5 Tech

    Carl Nassib DE

    Dylan Wynn DE

    Nile Lawrence-Stample DL

    Rose Kyle DL

    Cam Johnson DL

    Linebacker:

    Demario Davis ILB

    Christian Kirksey ILB

Scooby Ruh-Wright ILB/OLB - They are already talking about using him on STs

Joe Schobert OLB/ILB - I'm also hearing about a potential role on STs with him

    Nate Orchard OLB

    Emmanuel Ogbah OLB

    Barkevious Mingo OLB

    Paul Kruger OLB

Tank Carder ILB - Good special teams player with upside on trial

Armonty Bryant OLB - Very disappointed in the trouble he couldn't resist off the field

    Dominique Alexander LB

    Justin Tuggle LB

    Jackson Jeffcoat LB

    Defensive Backs:

    Joe Haden CB

    Tramon Williams CB

    K'Wuan Williams CB

    Jamar Taylor CB

Justin Gilbert CB - Offers STs ability. How will he respond to changes and experience as a Corner?

    Jordan Poyer FS

    Don Jones FS

    Rahim Moore S

If I left anyone out or kept somebody on that's already departed - please let me know. Since the goal here in the doldrums of summer is discussion - here's some questions you can feel free to answer as many as you want or share something else on your mind.

Any positions excite you in particular?

What players are you most intrigued by?

Do any names make you think - I forgot about him, glad he's still here?

A lot of our DBs and LBs can crack in as STs players - who do you want us to keep an eye on?

Do we have enough "big men that can run and little guys that can hit" for Horton Hears a Hue?

What guys do you think will respond best to Horton's scheme?

It'll be fun to see what guys benefit most from their 1st year of experience on the field and via offseason conditioning. Who do you think will fall into this category?

Do we have the ingredients to hurry more passers and create more turnovers?

How do you think our front 7 will be at stopping the run?

How do you think our LB Corps will be at dropping into their coverage zones on time to be effective?

I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts about the Defense...

Mingo anywhere in the secondary would be nothing short of an unimaginable disaster.

As for 'strong safety'... keep in mind there really isn't such a thing with Horton. The backend DB's in his defense are to be interchangeable (per his own words)
