NFL considering changing two rules...

  • See..Now we get Gordon back & all these wussies want to change the 50 yard PI penalty rule 😛..If intential PI rule is reviewable it's more Dilly! Dilly! ads with no action..keep the game simple please..4pm games are being moved to 4:30 already

  • There should be two tiers to PI.

One that is less flagrant (CB makes contact without turning head around, etc.) should be 15 yards.

But if it’s a 60 yd pass and the CB is beat and he tackles the WR? That should be a spot foul.

If they change everything to 15 yds, then a CB beat for a touchdown will just tackle the WR, because why wouldn’t you? 15 yds is better than a TD for the defense.

    Yes. Well said LOB!

Let's say it's late in a game with time for only 2 plays & a team is on its' own 25 yard line needing a FG. QB throws a 40 yard pass & the DB CLEARLY & intentionally interferes. That penalty INCREASES the chance for the defending team to win via a 15 yard penalty (70 yd FG attempt) whereas the spot penalty gives at least a viable FG attempt(52-54 yds). The 15 yard penalty invites more intentional PIs. Bad behavior rewarded & it WILL happen.

NO to 15 yds on all PIs.

Any beat defender that's more than 15 yards downfield...would just tackle the receiver.  That's what I would teach.

    Yep, & that sucks.

And that's why they can't change that rule.  I mean, a beat defender will tackle the receiver even WITHOUT the rule...so he doesn't give up a TD.

As for the 'catch' rule, I thought it was fine until they changed it to what it is now.  If you catch it and have two feet down then it's a catch.  So now if you catch it, have two feet down and dive into the end zone, if it comes loose when you hit the ground then it's incomplete.  Whereas a RB can dive over the goal line and it's a TD the instant the ball crosses the goal line.  He can drop it in mid air if he wants.

  • The problem with the catch rule for me is the introduction of the term 'process'.

I remember when I learnt what was a catch in the NFL that it was 'OK, catch and both feet, knee, arm or whatever that states that you're in bounds'.

Now they have to check thoroughly what happens between catcher's hand and the ball for 5 mins in an action that took place in less than a second. Did the ball move? Did it survive the ground? Did the catcher move or even free it for a second to assure that he makes the catch? (In Spanish we call it a two time catch)

The reviewing time-play time ratio is way too big on this one. And it happens even if it's not a catch for a TD!!!

On #1 they need to address the issue.

On #2 Buddah is on to something, the free chuckit 60 yard penalty is way to easy, but changing it to either 15 or spot becomes the dreaded judgement call but better than it is now. The 15 only in college isn't good either, someone is clearly beat for a TD just deck him and only get 15.

  • The only change to PI should be in the endzone. PI in the endzone should be a TD.

Rather than placing the ball at the 1 yard line pass interference in the end zone should be ruled a TD

No guarantee that the WR or recievers catch the ball. 1st and goal from the one.

What if it's offensive PI.  A TD for the D?

Then why not make a safety be worth 6 points?

And while we're at it we'll do away with 'half the distance to the goal'.  If a penalty moves you into the end zone then you get 6 points. (or your opponent gets 6 if it moves you into your own end zone)

Ok I'll buy som of the other arguments but come on, I was obviously referring to defensive PI

I understood that.  I'd be for it if you could limit it to just 'intentional' PI.  But that's subjective.
