He cant step on field without signing it. So it is sign it and play, sign it and get traded, or be released

But assuming he gets traded, can the new team renegotiate his contract?

At this point, what team is going to have both the cap room and sufficient need\ interest to eat the rest of that franchise tag?

Looks like the Steelers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Couldn't happen to a nicer team.

I think the Steelers do not think they are stuck as you say.   I think that they think that they can use Conner just about in the capacity as they used Bell....ergo their now willingness to trade him.

True in that respect. Their ability to unload Bell if at all, for what they percieve to be fair value remains to be seen.

From my understanding, he must sign that franchise tag to play, and thus when traded the new team must pay him that. He cannot negotiate a new deal until next year

Then the question is- what team is going to pay franchise money for a potential one year rent-a-player? Looking at Spotrac, there's no team with Super Bowl aspirations this year that has the cap room to eat $14 million.

I get the feeling that he's going the same way as a ex Frisco qb went.

Well have to remember that if he were traded tomorrow that 3 million would be off from 1st 3 games. Still don't think a team wants that.

I think if he wants his money....he will have to go to wherever will pay him.  Super Bowl aspirations or not.   He has demonstrated that he is all about the money....NOT winning or making the playoffs.   If he was into that, he would be playing now for a team that many think has Super Bowl aspirations  (while some of the rest of us think that team is dreaming if they do....not with that defense.  I would love to see FitzMagic shred that defense tonight)

True, but I think his point is only a team with SB aspirations will trade for him.

That was my take and anyteam willing to trade him wont give up too much to get him for a year rental. I would also be better to let him walk and then the Steelers can get the compensatory pick a year later it will probably be higher than any pick anyone offers them.

  • @hoorta said:

I believe they can rescind the franchise tag? Correct me if I'm wrong.

A little late for "this year" Po. Except they don't have a 5th round pick next year. Josh Gordon trade. The Browns also have the Patriots third round pick (Danny Shelton). So let's hope the Pats suck big time.

They do have their 4th rounder, and probably a couple compensatory picks at the bottom of the 3rd.  BTW, looking at Spotrack the Patriots only have $5 million in cap room this year, and $24 million total in cap room in 2019. Giving Bell a humongous deal does not compute from a math standpoint. Unless of course Brady retires.

Here's the potential landing spots, and scratch Cleveland off the list.  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/steelers-reportedly-willing-to-trade-leveon-bell-here-are-5-possible-landing-spots/  Just because we have the cap room doesn't mean we're going to give a malcontent the fat contract he thinks he's worth. If things go as planned, we're going to need that cap room when Garrett, Mayfield, and Ward come off of their rookie deals. Don't forget we shipped Gordon out because he couldn't toe the line.

Josh becomes a free agent after the season, so if he stays on the field and stays on track the I bet the Browns might decide to bring him home...

I gotta believe that the rule is fairly soft here. Not saying he can sign a new deal with a new team, but if they negotiate a handshake, long-term deal, he would then sign the tag and move on.

Kinda like the "no tampering" period just ahead of the start of UFA.

I was against Fitz on one FL and beat him on the other i had Fitz and lost against that old Frankenstien Roethlisberger on the last scoring drive by less than 3 points.....geeeezzzzz.

Fitzpatrick I heard something like three 400+ yard games in a row an NFL record? Got him as a replacement for Aaron Rodgers when he was hurt.

And Winston is back to TB next week, does Fitz still start? Hmmmmm.

I think Fitz starts at least one more.

The first half I was calling him "Fitztragic"... then the magic returned.

Would have been interesting if TB had managed one more defensive stop.

Bell is not in a good position either. If I were Pgh, I’d let him sit. He’s worth $850K in cap space each week. If he signs as a FA with another team after the season, Pgh gets what, maybe a third round comp pick in 2020? I doubt any team will give up more than that (probably less) for a rental player, so there is the incentive to let him hang out in strip clubs in Miami. He won’t get injured there unless some ho slaps him.

If he does not sign the franchise deal, they could franchise him again next year, though I could not imagine it. It does give them some leverage.

When he does sign with another team, I imagine it would be like Pgh waking up from surgery and being told the surgeon got all the cancer out.

    It is the Fitzpatrick cicle:

    1. He gets a backup contract

    2. The starter gets injured/a suspension

    3. He plays great for some games

    4. People talk about him as a franchise QB, as they are marvelled.

    5. He hosts a "Get a free pick today" party.

    6. He gets canned or traded.

    7. Start again.

    I love the dude.
