The Browns Board

  • Take way the emotion and Art deserves to be in the HOF.  He did more for the league than most any other owner.

It's time to forgive and forget. Leave the petty emotions aside. He belongs in the HOF.

I see where you are going with that.... take away his moving the team. firing Paul Brown, trading Paul Warfield, dumping Bernie Kosar, and being a complete arrogant, self-centered ass for most of his time in the nfl, firing coaches, losing seasons, .......well, yeah, he wasn't a ...bad owner.

But he doesn't belong in the HOF.

I got free passes for running a marathon in Canton and was excited to take the family inside but it was a snooze fest, lasted maybe 20 minutes before we 'ran' out of there.

  • Along with Robert Kraft and others.

I, personally, don’t think Modell should be anywhere near the HOF. Not only did he fire Paul Brown and Bill Belichick, HE MOVED THE BROWNS. End of story

Browns were a better team in the Art Modell years though. This browns...well...not so much.

With all due respect, hell no.

Fired Paul Brown, fired Bill Belichick, two of coaching 's all time greats. Right there, that's enough to disqualify him.

He was offered part of the Gateway Project, refused it. Declared a " moratorium" on the stadium issue, working through the backdoor to get out of town- total dishonesty there.

He & Georgia Frontierre voted to block expansion into Baltimore & St. Louis. Hmm, wonder why. Hence, the NFL puts teams in Carolina & Jacksonville. Those two owners pounced on the spurned expansion cities as soon as they could.

    Those are "emotionless" facts.

I don’t, particularly, care about the building. I have been there numerous times and it’s ok but a little boring. Kind of like the Rock Hall

I do care if that scumbag gets in though. He doesn’t deserve it at all. For all the reasons mentioned in this post. The biggest reason being. HE MOVED THE BROWNS.

  • He definitely doesn't deserve to be honored, I was just making a point the HOF is stupid.

Next year most people won't even remember if he was ever inducted anyways.(except some Browns fans)

Speaking of HOFs, watching Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly pushing Gene Hickerson's wheel chair up to the stage in Canton a few years into Alzheimer's Disease was a disgrace.  The poor guy wasn't even capable of celebrating something his mind couldn't comprehend.  He probably even had to be reminded who Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly were throughout that ceremony.  Here's the thing, this 6 Time Pro Bowl performer played his last down in 1973. They didn't induct him until 34 years later in 2007?  That's an honor many players dream about; and I think it stinks he was denied the ability to celebrate it when he had the mind to do so.

You guys allow your emotions to rule your minds.  None of that shit diminishes the things he did for the league and helped make it what it is today.

"he didn't win anything"    bla bla bla

Joe Thomas didn't win anything either if we go by your thinking..

  • "all the negativity in this town Sucks"  Rick Pitino

if anyone cares- there is a part in the 30/30 Believeland episode

where if you listen carefully, Modells son speaks to his fathers side of the story, a betrayal of the city in light of the

Indians new stadium.  You got to listen to David Modell try and do the impossible here- explain his dads reasons...

And for me, im done with the bitter hate that doesnt seem to end over  this team when it loses.

i dont like it, but not gonna hold a grudge over something I cant control anyways.

I appreciate your position, and coming from you it has some levity for me. What are the actual pros and cons of Art Modell?

”The Move” was the most impressionable of my lifetime. I understand his push for MNF was a thing. What else?

Please elaborate on all the wonderful things he did for the NFL to make it what it is today, but do not mention Monday Night Football.

Not everybody gets the chance at that. No one’s ever asked me to have Moscow whores pee on me. I’m not sure l’d be interested in that, but it would be nice to have the offer.

Like for what 'Peen? Start MNF, and negotiated fat TV contracts for the owners? Though I have to admit, it's a pretty low bar to get an owner inducted. If sleazebag Al Davis of the "Rovin Raiders is in, may as well let all the sleaze in. Shit... checking... they gave Jerry Jones a bust in Canton- for as far as I can tell, his contribution was building ever bigger stadiums.

    Forgive? Maybe... Forget...NEVER!!!

For your reading enjoyment the owners who ARE in the HOF... As I said earlier, it's a really low bar.  ?

Here are the NFL owners in Canton:

Bert Bell: He probably is in because he was NFL commissioner from 1946-59, not that that’s any reason, either. The NFL took off in the ‘60s.

Charles Bidwill: Owned the Chicago Cardinals from 1933-47. Not exactly a flagship franchise.

Al Davis: Owned the Raiders and was a maverick. Also was a coach of some repute in the ‘60s and the team’s general manager. You can make a case for Davis.

Eddie DeBartolo: Owned the 49ers. The 49ers were awesome. Is that the criteria? If you own a great team, you go into Canton? See note on Steelers...

George Halas: Founded the NFL and coached the Bears for more than 40 years. I think he’s deserving.

Lamar Hunt: Credited with founding the AFL. That’s probably deserving.

Curly Lambeau: Also was a great coach. Maybe he’s in as a coach more than an owner.

    Tim Mara: We’ve talked about.

Wellington Mara: I love the Giants. But Wellington Mara is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame because people love Wellington Mara. That’s no reason.

George Preston Marshall: Credited with helping found the NFL. Hopefully that’s why he’s in. His ownership was nothing special with the Redskins.

Dan Reeves: Not the halfback/coach Dan Reeves. The Rams owner from 1941-71. Why is Reeves in? For taking the NFL to the West Coast?

    Art Rooney: The Mara story.

    Dan Rooney: The Mara story.

Ralph Wilson Jr.: There are stories about how Wilson helped save the AFL. I guess I would say, so what? What if he did save it. Do you think the NFL would be second-class with the AFL merger of 50 years ago?

Jerry Jones: I don’t see it.

He was the lead for Pete Rozell in negotiating the TV deals and the basic structure that are still used today. That isn't mentioning MNF as you requested, but that was a bold move. That is HOF worthy IMO.  It isn't always about wins and fans chapped feeling about a owner.  I'd say most fans never liked the owners who have entered the hall.

Owners are enshrined based on their contributions to the league above what they may have done for a team or city.  Heck, Ed and Steve Sabol are in the HOF.  They didn't do anything to help a team win anything.  They did put the NFL front and forward with their contributions to the league.  Hell. Al Davis is in the HOF.  He moved his teams every other year it seemed.

Do I like Art Model?  No. For the same emotions most of you experience.  Does he deserve to be in the HOF?  Absolutely.

  • Does he deserve to be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely not.

Is he in the Burn in Hell Hall of Fame? He sure is.
