Sanders Falling, Dart Rising?

The Browns Board

I don't do "next year" during "this year" anymore.    I used to do that when the Browns were losing very close AFC Championship Games when I was in my early twenties.  40+  years later, I've learned the next year mentality is an excuse to mess up the draft this year.  Don't believe me?  The last QB this team drafted capable of leading this team to Conference Championship Games was Bernie Kosar in the 85 Supplemental Draft (40 years ago).  And that took a Supplemental Draft opportunity to get it done.

It's time for our FO to prove they can compete in the draft.  No excuses - no explanations!!!

Believe it or not Orion, I can see and like us going this route if we already have Travis Hunter in the house.  I saw him on an interview making it a point to say he ran an official 4.64 forty saying it bettered Josh Allen's 4.7 forty.  I don't think he said that to say he plans on running as often as Josh as much as he wants people to know he's not cement shoed if/when a situation calls for him to move (such as playing QB in an offense that has a tendency to have 1-2 starting offensive tackles injured).

I'm also not against drafting a QB later in the draft like a Kurtis Rourke, Riley Leonard or the shorter guy Dillon Gabriel (at an inch taller than Russell Wilson was on draft day - even been listed at 6' lately if true)...

Man, I so hear that.  I really and truly hate the idea of 'We'll get our QB next year'.  To me, that's like dying of a heart attack and saying you'll have the bypass operation next year.  Without a QB your season dies a slow, painful death.  It's a cop-out.  And the last time we were in this situation Haslem chose not to cop-out and spent the big assets on Watson...to finally put the QB problem to bed.  I give him credit for that.  And I'm certainly no Haslem fan.  ( too bad the whole thing fell flat on it's face )

Having vented all of that...I understand their dilemma.  If they truly don't believe that Sanders is any better than a guy they could get at the start of round 2, then they have to ignore the most important position in the organization at pick #2 and take the BPA, OR trade out if you think that the trade value outweighs the BPA at #2.  AND THEN, if you think that Sanders will be a decent QB, then with those newly acquired assets, trade into position to take him...OR...into position to take a QB ( like a Dart } who might not make it to round 2 ( if you like Dart or somebody ).  But you've GOT to come away with a QB shot-in-the-dark...because the position is just that important.  ANY other position, you play it by the book...but QB is off the curve important....

And for what feels like the 190th time this offseason, yes, let’s take a high pick and wish and pray that the mediocre QB prospect we’re using it on works out. I’d hate to use that #33 on another Joel Bitonio or Nick Chubb.

  • This QB class a a QB at 2 or anywhere before 33.  Is crazy talk regardless of the no QB no hope talk.

At 33 it is slightly easier to digest. We have what I believe maybe a 20 percent chance of making a selection at 33.  I believe we could stupidly trade up for a QB (acting out of panic) or wisely trade back while we are on the clock for 19 hours getting offers.  The sweet spot of this draft seems to be the second round where you can find good talent with actual second round grades.  OSU guys for instance JTT, Henderson and Jackson these are guys that not first round talents in most years but may see the back half of the first.  I am thinking players like this could get pushed back in that 45-55 range depending how other teams view talent

    Can they throw TD passes?

    Then they're a luxury item.

Now if you can't pick the QB because he stinks, then go ahead and pick the luxury items.  What else can ya do?  Trade 3 first rounders for someone's QB?

I'm holding off on giving Jimmy credit and I'll tell ya why..  Okay Baker was immature so going after a QB in the situation Watson put himself in - didn't upgrade the character of the QB at all right?  It certainly didn't make the difference in leadership either. Looking at what the 2 QBs have done the last 2 seasons - he definitely didn't upgrade Baker's passing.  In conclusion, we spun our wheels and gave up too many high round draft picks (that are showing up as needs today) - when in actuality we'd give anything for a QB that can throw over 40 TD passes for this team today...

Yeah, I never thought that Watson was going to be a team leader in anything except passing stats.  But the success of the organization is based on Wins & Losses...not whether the woman's auxiliary likes your QB or not.  The plan wasn't for Watson to fall flat on his face.  And remember, two teams after us gave up on Baker in very short order.  We weren't the only ones to see him as expendable.

Kind of.  One of them was Carolina who gave up on Darnold too as well as benching 1st overall pick Bryce Young; so they blamed the QBs for their inability to field a good team around the QB. The Rams already invested very heavily in Matthew Stafford so they weren't going to cut him for Cheese Cakes.  Both parties saw Baker in LA as an audition for after Stafford gets healthy again.  Right on cue, it became  the experience that interested Tampa in him.  Today, he's throwing over 40 TD passes and leading the Bucs to the playoffs in 2 consecutive seasons.

Moving forward, we're under 2 weeks til the draft.  What are you thinking for the 1st 2 rounds?

    2)  worried about what jackass move they'll make because you've lost faith in their abilities as draft evaluators, that they're on thin ice regarding their jobs and like a wounded animal, might do anything from totally crazy to sane.       ☺️

Yes indeed!   Jim Gaffigan should be fun.   Usually day 3 gets away from who is being drafted with all these side stories; and then they catch you up as quick as they can on the last 5 or 6 guys drafted. Of course, Rich Eisen has to remind us he's a huge Michigan fan quite a few times throughout the day. Then he's going to run his 40 yard dash as fast as any sloth in the world can for a good cause at least.
