5 QB’s In The Room

Probably next offseason
Maybe. Depends on if they can and want to take the massive dead cap hit in 2026.
Ain't no team trading for him with his contract

That is true, there isn't a team that's touching him with THAT contract.
I won't lie and say I understand the ins and outs of the salary cap, Unsympathetic is good with that. I do think that next year the Browns will be paying their other QBs very little (possibly the QB room in 2026 is three guys on rookie contracts) so with Watson being on his last season of his contract next off-season, they might just bite the bullet.

Perfect. The Emergency QB designation. And if they want Sanders to go in at the end of a blow-out and just mop-up, they'll just have Flacco & Gabriel run up to an official, swear their heads off at him, and get ejected.

Gabriel changed his number from 5 to 8. I didn't like #5. I've never been a huge fan of #8 either.....but if you turn it on it's side then it's infinity....which is cool.

I was kind of surprised that there wasn’t a run on quarterbacks wearing 16 after Montana retired back in the day, but Jake Plummer is the only guy I remember.

And I'm surprised we haven't had a run on #2!!?

That's good. That famous T-shirt listing all the QBs that failed in Cleveland since the 80s has so many names on it now that it prolly comes in Tent Sizes.

Flacco, Gabriel, Sanders. Zappe ends up #3 and Sanders gets traded for a bag of practice balls.

I don't think that we really know how much Sanders sucks. But we DO KNOW how much Zappe sucks.

Zac Jackson: “If this were a first-round quarterback, you might think about playing him now, right? But you made the decision to go with Joe,” Jackson
. “Why is Joe here? For his experience, for his calm, for getting guys in the right positions. You have to give him a chance to do that, right? And if guys are still not getting open, not catching the ball, or not running the right route in a couple of weeks, you can explore that. But the reality is, you’re about to go to Detroit, you’re about to go to London to play Brian Flores, and then you come back to play in Pittsburgh. So, I would let Joe take those punches.” -
While calls for a quarterback change grow louder, former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar is urging patience with the current situation.
“I think it would be torture for a young quarterback out there. I mean, look, I want to see him play, but it’s hard. It’s hard in the NFL—even with loaded teams. And this team, I’m not picking on it, but it’s not loaded. To put the young guys out there right now is sinful. If you want to see them fail, that’s how you do it. You’re going to develop bad habits, you’re not going to believe in yourself, your eyes are going to drop, and you’re going to start hearing the demons. It’s too early.”Kosar

And I’ll fully admit, I always lean towards keeping a young player on the bench possibly even longer than he needs to make sure he’s not rushed in too soon. I’ll always be hesitant to start a rookie QB or to promote a young stud from the minors to the majors in baseball. I can’t think of many players in sports history whose career was ruined because he sat and learned too long… but the list of players who were rushed in too fast and it negatively affected their careers is a long one.
That list is long, and it is strong, and it is ready to get the friction on.

there is no one size fits all answer.
Pro ready or project? And Handle of the playbook if you can unleash most or the entire playbook at them probably more inclined to give the guy a shot. And you interview these guys and study their college careers did they face adversity overcome poor play or sitting the bench.
a guy like Anthony Richardson maybe sits for two years
A guy like Gabriel started a lot of games for three different programs gets the keys earlier than most.

Yeah, that's a good point. He's played more college games than the vast majority. He's quite experienced...but he'll still be faced with learning the NFL speed of NFL starting defensive players...like any other rookie.
