5 QB’s In The Room

unless there's a massive infusion of young talent on the OL and at WR, no QB is going to stand a chance.
Yes...that's the inconvenient truth. However, if you need a QB, then you need a QB. That's a May Day, All Hands On Deck, situation. Every draft you are comparing players against the best available QB. Until you are settled at QB.
Will we draft one in April? Well, I think that was the plan as of last April. Trade away Travis Hunter for another 1st rounder next year...which will give us assets to get the QB that we want...meanwhile we draft that future QB's backup this year and have Pickett or Flacco play. That was the plan. And, of course Pickett got hurt, Flacco had to be the starter...he showed that even HE couldn't lift the offensive talent around him, so now, we're in QB evaluation mode. Gabriel is auditioning now.
I don't think that anything we've seen so far would change them from seeing the plan through. But there's half of a season left.

Damn I think we all know that team holes cannot be fixed all at once, but I'm truly having a hard time wrapping my head around these thoughts (and I've seen/heard many others say similar things).
It's supposed to be a professional organization. They're paid to try & win games. They charge plenty of $$ for fans to watch (home games).
Playing "for next year" while not even starting the current season is criminal.
So if what you wrote is true, the franchise should be taken away from Haslam (fat chance obviously). The only other answer would be that they grossly over rated the guys they brought in to play offensive line & WR, which falls on the FO. I suppose one could argue they couldn't spend money on better players due to cap restraints they created all by themselves. What a mess.

Whoa Bob! They're trying to win these games...Stef, Schwartz, et all. I'm quite sure of it. And on Sunday everybody in the organization is wanting a win. Remember back at the Winter Meetings...Haslam was telling the press that they swung and missed on the Watson trade and that Browns fans might need to be a little more patient because it's going to take a couple of years to fix the QB situation. He pretty much told us that the QB was not in this draft but in the next. (at least that was the thinking at the time, now it's not so clear that this is the big QB draft class that it was thought to be)

Well... You keep tossing darts till you find one..
My feelings are unless it is a new GM and coach, we better not pick another QB next year.
Those 2 guys just picked two fucking QBs this last draft. How many QB's are we going to let those numbskulls select before improving a few other areas on the O?
What concerns me is that, provided there is a new GM and HC, that "tossing darts" will be the mentality. In order to rubber stamp their new position(s) they draft a QB in, what's looks like, a pretty underwhelming class.
To me that's similar to what the Vikings did with JJ McCarthy. They had a need, and they drafted to address it. But did they address is correctly and with the right choice? I've believe 'no' since day 1 and it has been an incredibly rough start for McCarthy.
Asking Cleveland fans to be patient is like asking to be slapped. But if patience, nuance and particularness aren't used by new leadership in selecting the *right* QB, then any new regime will just be adding to the million name jersey in due time.

My intent wasn't to imply that any new GM should be forced in to selecting a QB. They will have some time to do that, be it year 1-2-3.
The people currently in charge are kind of in the position of being forced in to that since they are in year 5 or 6 of that mission.
My point is if we keep Berry and Ski, we need to more or less make them stick with the picks they made and take steps to build a support system around them to help them be the QB's they envisioned when drafted.
Flacco demonstrates this. When here he looked like a washed up old vet. In Cincy he is looking like some sort of MVP candidate. He didn't leave here because he was some 15-17 year washout or became good because he found the fountain of youth in the Ohio River. He looked bad because his supporting cast was broken, starting to break down and possibly because the O system is stale.
I don't see how we can possibly expect a rookie no matter his name to change anything after 4-5 games to do better than a seasoned vet who is showing he isn't washed up.
We may have a QB problem but from this old guys vision, we have bigger problems than QB. It looks pretty evident to me that we will continue to have QB "problems" until he fix some of the other things.

Meanwhile they have no choice IMO other than to go with Watson and Sanders, chunk the midget QB and fix the OL and WR positions. They set it up that way, so time to roll with it in 2026. I'm sayin' there's a chance.

There was a chance this year.
Of course, nobody knew the AFC North would suddenly become weak, some of it due to injuries.

I think this is where we disagree. Because with any change in hands, especially under the current ownership, "splash" QBs have been the norm every single time and I believe there will be pressure to immediately right the ship with one.
- 2014 with Manziel
- 2017 with Kizer. The only reason he wasn't a 1st round pick was because of the trade up that year plus the QB slides. Even then, GB almost doubled dipped out of #33.
- 2018 with Baker
Obviously one of these is not like the others, but I think you get my point.
The people currently in charge are kind of in the position of being forced in to that since they are in year 5 or 6 of that mission.

Preaching to the choir here, bubs. That isn't to say Flacco didn't have his problems here. He absolutely did. But having arguably the best WR corps in the NFL has made him look pretty damn solid.
You said it best, Flacco wasn't able to elevate talent around him. I'd argue he's never been able to do that in his career.
If the OL was better and you had a primary WR to build your passing game around, average QB play would have this team at 4-4.
You're correct, there are problems beyond the QB. We're all old-school here. Starts in the trenches, in to out, front to back. OL needs rebuilt. Do that and the rest of the offense, even if it was with the same personnel you had week 1, will immediately be better for it.

What college QB do you think is worth it with our first pick?
I only watch so much college football, but l like Mendoza from IU. He’s kind of a petri dish pick though because he’s working in an environment with a plus Oline and a plus group of skillset guys. The Browns are not that environment.
As of this moment? None. QB's, especially 1st overalls, that live up to the billing are pretty uncommon. I also have to admit that I haven't started by QB evals and likely won't until after the season ends. The all-22 for CFB has become more available these last 6-7 years. I have a couple hookups including one from an air-raid college in memphis. So I, or anyone else for that matter, really can't give you the most accurate assessment and answer until that time.
But I have been watching a sleeper for next year that I expect to rise - Darian Mensah, from Duke.
I'm not tia, nor do I play him on TV, but IMO the only QB I'd feel somewhat comfortable taking with the Browns high first round pick would be Mendoza. (And I'm not 100% sold on that as of today either)
The only guys I could see being in consideration for a top 10 pick other than him are woefully inexperienced - Sellers, Simpson and Moore - and they are all projections at this point.
Taking one of those guys is something only a head coach/front office that is solidly in place with a great track record, i.e. what Kansas City did with Mahomes with Andy Reid as head coach. Mahomes sat his entire rookie season until the last game of the season.
The Browns taking one of those three guys with Berry and Stefanski clinging on to their jobs would be a recipe for disaster, IMO.
Regardless of the coaching staff, unless there's a massive infusion of young talent on the OL and at WR, no QB is going to stand a chance.
I also don't like half-assing it. Either we see a kid and you love his game as a QB, or you find somebody at another position group whose game you just love. Too often, reaching for the 3rd or 4th QB's in a draft, especially high, don't produce the results you'd like.

I’d prefer not to draft for need in the Top 10. We did that in 2020 because we had a need for an OT when Baker was leaving clean pockets in 2019. Enter our need pick Jed Wills. I get the feeling that some of you would reach for a Tackle rather than reach for a QB and I think arguments can be made on both sides.
Do you pass again on a QB trade back and accumulate capital in 27 for Simpson, Sayin or Arch? That is a hard sell. Let’s bring in a McCown type or pray Watson can do something ouch. Go Buckeyes next year
Although entering two drafts 25 and 26 with Top 5 picks and not taking a QB is unprecedented. We are dying fan base we are all older…We saw Thomas, Mack and Schwartz blocking for slow processing QBs. The QB position is everything. I guess I’d be willing to take SOME risks finding/drafting that guy. Not all the time… Last year, I was in the hell no to Shedeur and Dart at 2 camp even though we needed a QB.
In regard to Flacco, he had a shitty line in Cleveland a shitty line in Cincy the worst WR group in Cleveland and the Best in Cincy. WRs in Cincy catch contested throws and get separation - Joe as we know throws into coverage often times unwisely trusts his WR but you better be ready to fight for the ball. He might have the biggest stat/play differential from first four to last four games - check it out. His line sucks there, is it the play calling and WRs maybe?
Need/Desire/demand the second first round pick needs to be Carnell Tate.
before panties go in a wad I’m not saying neglect the OLine again. The top 5 pick is an asset that I’m not excited to use on it though.

I agree 99.999%...because physics is everything.

The Browns own first round pick is almost guaranteed to be a top five overall pick, but the QB, OTackle and Wide Receiver classes are kind of lacking in players worth such a high pick.

Do we have a Drake Maye somewhere this year? Maye had a shaky last year at UNC mainly because they graduated talent around him but he went from Air Raid to a more pro style approach and he struggled. But he had size and a good arm and good athleticism although he drew some comparisons to old Baker Mayfield as a gunslinger.
Fano looks like the best tackle and next February when others start posting clips half this board will be drooling over the run blocking clips.
The best WR in this draft is Carnell Tate and he will run a Drake London like 40 - it is reported he doesn’t run well but I think that’s a good comp for him (London) although Tee Higgins is mentioned often.

YAHTZEE!
My response to the 1st line in bold: IMO Yes. Mendoza. He's 6'5" full of poise and accuracy; and he's pretty damn good when tucks it up and jets too. Nothing to overthink here. Let's make sure we remember this is Maye's 2nd year so there were growing pains that the team drafting him was intelligent enough to know there would be some they could coach out of their young QB. Kind of like the Josh Allen development in Buffalo.
As much as I'm with anyone that likes more experience in QB prospects - I'm gonna waive that for Ty Simpson. If we keep Tommy Rees - this guy would be more familiar with Tommy's offense than anyone else coming out so that's experience even though he was a backup QB at the time. Aside any of that - just WATCH the guy and know he can be a promising QB like Maye in his 2nd season. The OL situation is a disaster. It sure would be nice to have 1 WR that can get open immediately to help whoever is playing QB from getting killed by our weak OT position. Then again this FO has inexplicable tenure to perpetuate the dumpster fire on the edges of pass pro. If we're gonna draft a franchise QB - it would be nice if our owner understood he needs to protect such an important investment with quality Tackles.

That is pretty much what I'm thinking too...
Obviously there were empty seats at the Jets game. That's what our home games are going to be looking like. But if you announce the Monday morning after the loss to the Raiders, whatever remaining available seats will sell and there will be a full house for the game. The 'bump in interest' could spill over to the next week against the Titans where Sanders will be playing in the, #1 Pick In The Draft Bowl.

Funny you bring up the Titans, because I was thinking about a scenario today and you just might be the person to ask this:
The scenario is the Titans and Browns end up #1 and #2 in the draft again. I can't see Tennessee drafting Mendoza obviously, so how much would you give up to move up to #1 overall to ensure no one jumps the Browns and takes him?
Would you give up the Browns other first round pick (#19 overall today) to make sure to get Mendoza?

The current 2026 draft value chart shows that the #2 pick plus 400 more points would be enough to move up the one spot. That would mean our 2nd round pick should be enough.
But before looking up the chart I said to myself, 'I would fight tooth and nail to keep the Jaguars pick'. I would trade it along with our #1 but we would have to be a bit further down the draft order.
But there's a lot we'd need to know first: Did we find out that neither Gabriel or Sanders is worth pursuing as a #1 QB?
Is Mendoza all by himself? Will other QB's prove to be worthy of a high #1 draft pick?
You know me. I want a tall QB. If my people (scouts, etc.) told me that Mendoza is the real deal, then I'm sick to death of evaluating QB's every winter. I'm sick of not having a chance because of the QB position. I'd do almost anything I had to do to get him.
We had the great Jim Brown when we last won a championship. But it was the QB and Receiver combo that scored all of the TD's in that last championship of ours. I'd come out of the 2026 draft with Mendoza, a couple of OLinemen and a couple of WR's. Because I'M FUCKIN' SICK OF IT!

Unfortunately, the Jets now have TWO 1st round picks in 2026 + THREE 1st round picks in 2027 + TWO 2nd round picks in 2026. My guess is whoever holds the 1st overall pick will be aware of this.

Right. The Jets are our royal PITA team in terms of the draft. They're in crazy mode. They're liable to throw the kitchen sink at the #1 pick holder. I don't know that we want to get into that kind of a war. The easiest way is to lose out. I bet that gets us the #1 overall.
We've got a couple of what would be called winnable games coming up against the Raiders & Titans. But our offense is so pathetic that we would really have to play a perfect game to beat the worst teams in the league.
The ironic thing is that the rest of the division keeps coming back to us. We're only 3 games out of 1st place. And we play them once yet. The division title is still within reach. And yet I wouldn't be able to find a sane person that would think we'd have a snowball's chance in Hell...
I honestly believe that the ONLY chance we have at winning the division is by putting in Sanders at QB for the very next game. And this is ONLY because we can't say for 100% certain that Sanders won't be the better QB. This particular group of offensive players that we trot onto the field every week requires the QB to carry them. I think that we've seen that it's not going to be Gabriel at this point in time...and truly it's unfair to expect a rookie QB to be able to do that...but it's what is required to save the season.
Right now we need a QB that has shown the ability to make things happen. To make plays. And to make plays out of nothing...that would be more up Sanders' alley.
