Nick Fairley Or Marcell Dareus

The Browns Board

  • I thought they both looked great at the combine.

When you watch Fairley on tape, his first step is probably the best in college football. The ten-yard split doesn't take into account reactions to the snap, to the o-line, ect. (Though Dareus time was unbelievable for 320 lbs).

I'll take Fairley because I think he can be an elite 3-technique pass rushing tackle next to a more stout Rubin. That combo would be a great start to a D-line and I think they would complement each other perfectly.

If the team is convinced Fairley is a hard-worker and doesn't have character issues than I think he would be the choice.

I like them both a lot though.

Can someone please explain to me what a 3 technique and 5 technique pass rusher is. I listened to the guys at the combine use both all the time and am lost with their definitions. Also, which one is better for a 4-3 and why. Thanks in advanced.

  • I'm definitely not an expert on this but I usually think of a 5-technique as a 3-4 DE. They usually line up face up with the OT. The nose-tackle plays directly opposite the center.

In a 4-3 defense, one tackle plays between the center and a guard. The other (the 3-technique) plays just outside of the guard on the other side. The 3-technique usually is a better pass rusher and is often in a one on one with the guard.

Here is a really good link that explains the alignment and assignments of each player in both styles of defense and compares the two. It has good pictures and explains it a lot better than I can.

  • Personally id take Dareus because i think Fairley has a higher ceiling but he also has a lower floor, another thing i considered was there 10 yard spilt which they run in the 40 Dareus was alot faster and he is alot bigger. Which means to me he has more explosing coming off the line of Scrimmage...So let me know who you got and why? Theres a very good chance they both could be there when we pick

You can look at the 10 yard splits and say he ran slower, but I dont think you can say he plays football slower. From what I've seen Fairley looks much quicker then Dareus. Marcell looks slow and easily blocked, Fairley's got that killer instict, and a great first step. Some of his aggressiveness is going to have to be tempered down at the next level, but that's easier to do then trying to motivate somebody to be more aggresive. I like him alot at 4-3 DT with his disruptive style, but its more likely Marcell would fall to us, who then I would chose JJ Watt over.

  • dareus's hands are amazing.. that and his size separate him from fairley

  • Fairley's athleticism and play doesn't do diddley, for an NFL team that drafts him, and has him getting

arrested on weapons and assault charges, and or drug charges.

    Darius' character is fine.

  • Agreed about the charcter concerns with Fairley, i see him as alot more cocky and aggroant which could be a good thing or it could make you Chad Ocho Cinco...Warren Sapp was Cocky as well but a hell of a player btw he thinks Dareus is alot better than Fairley

  • Dareus with Rubin would be a great pair bringing pressure up the middle.Dareus has been a force for more than 1 year.A DE can be found in rounds 2-4 that can solidify the D Line.

  • Neither if Green and/or Peterson are there, otherwise, Dareus

JJ Watt is not fast enough to be a 4-3 DE and not big enough to be a DT, he is a 3-4 DE and does not fit in our system.

MAKES ME THINK OF GERRARD WARREN WHO HAD A COLLEGE MEAN STREAK BUT WAS SO SO IN HIS COMMITMENT TO TRAINING.

DARIUS NO CONTEST, YET IF FAIRLY...TO HIGH A PICK TO OVERLOOK THE BIG IF.

  • If only a caps button existed....oh wait

A 4.7 40 is plenty quick enough to play DE. If you wanted to bulk him up to play DT, at 6-5 290lbs he has the prototypical frame to add muscle in a NFL program.

In my opinon hes not a fast enough end for the 4-3, a high 4.7 is not a great enough pass rush to have when in the 4-3 you need dynamite ends to get the QB, ala Freeny,Mathis etc..

There aren't any DE's in this draft running 4.4's, 4.6 is the best time I've seen a DL run. Watt will make up for that one tenth of a second with his effort and long length and he's got the ability to play either DE or DT.

I love Watt as a player but i think theres just way to many ppl ahead of him i would take, Peterson,Green or Dareus...If there gone that means Bowers or Fairley might be there and id take them ahead of him as well...And i think Von Miller may be the second best player in this draft and would love for the Browns to grab him..No disrespect to Watt i just see alot of other players that would be there that id rather have tham him..

O and btw way there was a DE from Nevada who ran the fatest 40 time ever for a D-lineman this year, he also led the Ncaa FB Divison1 in tackles for loss

  • He ran a 4.44

  • He ran a 4.44

    @nw220 said:

Moch is projected to be a LB, at 6'1" he's definitely undersized at DE. But Heckert said he's looking at undersized DE with some speed of the edge, and he said there's alot of them in this draft. So a guy like that is probably likely after the 1st round. If we get Watt in the 1st to play strong side DE and be stout against the run and pass, then get a edge rusher in the 2nd or 3rd to play opposite him would make for a pretty ideal situation. Then put a undersized guy like Drake Nevis next to Rubin and you got yourself a good combination to be able to stop the run and still get pressure on the QB. The possibilities.....I cant wait till the draft

  • That dude from Nevada is actually predicted to switch to OLB in what ever system he is in but at 250 he would really only need to gain about 20 pounds to be a good weight for DE. I don't take all that bullshit about arm length and height. Ya to a certain point someone reaches their max on how much muscle they can put on a frame but I'm sure this guy could add 20 pounds and me a solid 270.
