  • Wow... this has to be the most bipolar forum on the net...

I can still remember the accolades Bess drew when we signed him...

    He was our FA steal...

His pass reception rate was the highest in the league...

    And on...

    And on...

He muffed a friggin' punt... it happens.

The punt was short... he sprinted to get to it and got to it.

And rather than go down after fielding it he looked up to continue the run back...

He tried to make a good play a better play...

    And it went wrong...

He is our sure handed return man.

Put in to field all critical punts...

    Why?

Because three games ago (IIRC) Benji muffed one deep in our end of the field...

    As for his "dropped passes"...

Y'all need to go to the tape...

Cause the three that immediately spring to mind, including the game ending one, were all terrible throws.

He dropped one early in the game on a deep slant that looked to me like a good pass...hit him in the hands and in stride, could've been a nice gain.

The 2nd drop was a really bad pass and was behind him but still could've been caught but not his fault for dropping it.

The game ender....tough play...hard to call it a terrible pass when it was remarkably accurate considering the circumstances and a whole lot better than Weeden just tossing the ball out of bounds on a 4th down game ending play. It wasn't an easy catch by any means, but a pro receiver has to catch that pass.

Dropped passes are only registered if they hit the receivers hands, which they did.

If you're an NFL receiver and you're not 6'5 with 4.4 speed, you better catch everything thrown to you.

Inexcusable performance and inexcusable coaching for keeping him on the field after his second dropped pass and muffed punt.

Some days you just don't have it, and coaches have to recognize that. Today Bess didn't have it. I hope he feels like garbage all week.

  • Before today's game the browns had 3 receivers in the top 15 for dropped passes.

    #10 Bess

    #12 ogbonnanya

    #14 Gordon

I expect them to be higher tomorrow.

Yes we were happy when we signed him .... But why is it not OK to say he absolutely sucked today?

    He did.

    He knows it.

    Everybody knows it.

    But you.

Making excuses for a fumbled punt because he was trying to "make a good play a better play"?

He fumbled. Not a muff. No one touched him. He fucked up badly. Is what it is.

You can't just give the ball away so easily.

uh when they replayed his drops for the day only ONE was thrown behind him and he would have made catch of the year to bring that one in. Otherwise all those passes were balls HS receivers routinely net. And the last one? are you seriously suggesting that last throw wasn't right in his fucking lap?

Agree... but at the rate clowns around here fire players for having a bad game we could not field an 11 on 11 practice...

And we are only halfway through the season.

Just because he fumbled it did not mean you had to recover it... and for KC no less.

Actually, I'm the one that said he had a bad game.

    Tour won't admit it.

Just calling out a critically bad performance he had today.

Fumbled punt was a bad, bad, bad, bad play on his part.

The drops really hurt us too.

Deep down, I know you agree ... and NOW I feel better.

    Zombo

--He's a standup guy, he'll have a good game next week ... but he's gotta be leading the league in drop percentage ... massive disappointment from what we were expecting from him.

  • Odd thing is if you google "Bess punt muff" one vs. the Bengals in 2010 pops up... back then Bess had long hair.

Google "Bess muffed punt" and today's shows up...

If he only muffs one every three years, I can live with that.

And being that Bess is our "precision route/ hands guy", it's just possible that if he has more than two games in a row with the same QB, then his production will improve.

  • I agree ... I am hoping the worst is out of the way and now he has a great 2nd half of season with Camps.

    But that was no muff.

    Muffed punt
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In American football, a muffed punt is defined as "touching of the ball prior to possessing the ball."

A muffed punt occurs when there is an "uncontrolled touch" of the football by a player on the returning team after it is punted. This can occur when:

    • The kicking team interferes with the other team's right to catch the punt
    • A player on the kicking team is struck unaware by the football running down-field to cover the punt.
    • A player attempts to
      return
the ball, makes contact with it but cannot retain the ball in his hands and it comes loose.
      [1]

A muffed punt is not a fumble. To be a fumble, the receiving team must possess the football, then lose control. In the case of a fumble, the ball is live and can be returned by the team that recovers the ball. In the case of a muffed punt, it is possible for the punting team to recover the ball and continue the drive, but at least in NCAA and NFL rules, they cannot advance the ball on that same play. Rules vary by league about how to handle a muffed punt.

In the NFL, a muffed punt cannot be challenged by a coach for review.

Amen, he will bounce back and be fine.

  • He's dropping a ton of passes, exactly who we DIDN'T think he was, including in preseason. Weird.

  • Extremely disappointed in Bess
