What if the FO doesn't see a franchise qb in this draft?
-
IMO, I don't see a franchise qb in this draft. The best qb seems to be Derek Carr, but we will see. Other than that, what is there? I bet bridgewater goes back to school, he doesn't look as ready as everyone thought.
So, we're kind of in a tough position. Does the FO try to rush and get a qb in this draft (ala Holmgren getting Weeden) or do we wait until the 2015 draft, which seems like a much better qb class.
If we don't get a qb, were in a tough situation and we'd be putting all our chips in on Hoyer, and who would our backup be? But qb is our Achilles heel, we can be so good with a competent qb..
Agree on no franchise QB in 2014 draft. To me that means none is worth a first round pick. But IMO you have to draft a QB nearly every year, so...
There are a few with potential in 2nd round and on. As a third rounder I thought McCarron was a no brainer, but now he's looking more like a solid 2nd. Fales should be around in the 4th. There are a couple interesting 7th round picks, i.e., Guiton and TCU's Paschall.
Want a longer shot FA? Invite Tyler Russell to camp. He was Miss. St's pre-season projected starter, but missed most of the year due to injury. He came back late in a loss to Bama and season ending win over Arkansas. Going into the year he was projected as high as the 2nd round.
Our 2014 QB depth chart: Hoyer / Campbell / Rookie TBD
I'd take Jay Cutler or Matt Schaub for a couple years while we develop a guy from this draft
A has been and a never was...
Bilgewater would be a moron to stay in school and risk a knee injury that would cost him literally millions of dollars.
Bilgewater... lol... not sure why this did not occur to me before.

TCPO what do you even know about mallet that you consider him as a brandon weeden?
i think god broke the mold when he made that dumb fuck.
-
Looking at Mallet would be fine and if he really knocks you out you swing a deal but I doubt it. Schaub would be just ok as a back up at most. I am not sold on Cutler at all, his abilities and drive seem to fluctuate drastically.
Overall I agree with the OP, I do not see a franchise QB in this draft. In that case we should not reach. Take a guy in the 2nd or 3rd with upside and let him compete with and / or learn from Hoyer. Frankly wiwth our track record I would take a QB in the 2nd and another somewhere between 4th and 7th.
With Hoyer at the helm and the rest of the draft picks shoring up the right side of the OL, a good number 2 receiver and a decent power back to complement Dion Lewis we are money.
The way this board thinks about Bridgewater makes me think no one has watched him. I literally do not understand it.
I understand being critical of the fact that he hasn't played high level competition or the fact he only weighs 200 lbs, but it's all there when you're talking about his ability to throw every pass he needs to and read a defense/make audibles. He is by far the best QB prospect in the draft.
Did this all change because Louisville lost, because if so that's stupid as hell.

Thinking we can fix all our problems in the draft is wrong, we need to add FA's. We can't be the youngest team in the league forever.

I may be wrong but how many passes has mallet thrown in the NFL?

He's 200 lbs?
Fuck that.
We need big, sturdy guys.
I don't think there is one successful NFL QB under 205.

Four in 2012... Mallet is 1/4 for 17 yds with 0 TDs and 1 INT.
Houston was 10-6 and 12-4 the last two season, clearly we have better right? He had a bad year.
The Bears 10-6, 8-8 and 11-5 the last three years......
The Browns haven't won more than 5 games the last 5 years.....
Yea I will take Jay Cutler or Matt Schaub
If you mean vs. Wheezy, fine.
If you mean vs. Hoyer or (the formerly shot but now revived QB named) Campbell, then no.
The way this board thinks about Bridgewater makes me think no one has watched him. I literally do not understand it.

I've repeatedly posted both critiques of Teddy, lack of competition and physicality, as have others.
I've seen him look to the sidelines for audible calls as do most collegiate QBs now (I hate that). And I think I see him looking for open receivers vs. reading D's, but I may be wrong...
Being the best in any given draft is a relative comment that is of no import. Teddy may in fact be the most ready for the NFL, but that does not mean he is ready for the NFL and does not mean he should be drafted high. Given his frame size, whether he will survive the learning process is a legitimate question.

talk to to KYBROWNSFAN who has watched every louisville game this year and ask him how impressed he is with bridgewater.
look up the stats for tom brady's first offensive start for one posession. or aaron rodgers of peyton mannings.
7 attempts. with one intercept? sounds like he was thrown in at the perfect time while brady was getting his nails done down 56-0.
i'll take that resume over someone who's never taken a snap in the fuckin league.
fuckheads.

I hear you about the size, Zombo. But everybody take notice for the rest of the season and into the next... Concussions are going to be the key word. Hell half the players up there can barely speak the language so how can you tell if he's concussed or stupid.... Seriously the League will be over reacting to that as we watch the game slide into flag football.

Not really sure where you figured this out about Mallett. Plus Mallett is 6 or 7 years younger than Weeden and still has room to grow. I'd take a chance on him before drafting Bortles or Garappolo. If we can get Carr, do it, but Mallett may be the best bet after him.We have Mallet already in Weeden.
In terms of physicality, arm strength and football IQ, they're the same player. They're probably also on the same level in decision making and comfort in the pocket, which is awful on our part because Weeden has been playing for two seasons while Mallet hasn't.

He's got a cannon for an arm and he is dumb as shit.
That's how I figured it out.
Obviously, Mallet is one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks of the last 10 years. He's big, he's mobile enough, he can make all the throws and he did so at a relatively big college program that plays in a more than relatively elite conference.
But he's also been swirled in rumors involving his off the field life, and they're the kind that really make you question what goes on in his head. I couldn't care less if he smokes a little pot, as long as it's not becoming a problem. The reports that scared me where the ones about him pissing off nearly all of his Michigan teammates for being too cocky and saying he was better than them. Then, add to that a few analysts claiming they knew stuff about Mallet that would make any team pass on him.
There have been hundreds of quarterbacks with superior athletic talent that have busted because of character concerns, far more than have busted for not being athletically gifted.

The reason he wasn't the first QB drafted was off-field concerns. This is his third year in the NFL and you haven't heard his name in the news at all. I think he's kept his nose clean enough to where that's no longer a concern. And he's had 3 years of mentoring from the best in the biz. The fact Belichek doesn't want to get rid of him only intrigues me more. Like I said, I'd bet on him being a successful NFL QB before anyone besides Carr....and he's probably going to be cheaper and come in more seasoned....what's not to like? He's got a cannon for an arm and he is dumb as shit.

Wow, Browns Boards are just so notoriously anti quarterback, saying every draft is weak, year after year... while the Browns can't be seriously relevant until they have their long-term franchise quarterback. It's like Groundhog Day.
This is a very good quarterback draft. Bridgewater, Carr, Hundley, and Manziel are the likely first rounders. The Browns won't miss our on all four. Bank it. There are scads of possible risers, too, like Bortles and Garoppolo.

Yes agree. I just didn't mention FA's in my comments. Absolutely some of the positions will be addressed there.

I am all for pulling the trigger to get a franchise guy when there is one available. The list we talk about today will change drastically by draft day. I hope we get our guy but I don't want us to reach and mortgage our future unless we are dead convinced we got our guy.

Did we hear anything about Aaron Hernandez until his infamous murder?
The Patriots are experts at keeping things swept under the rug.
I'd bet that two of the QB's in this draft become more successful than Mallet over the long term, and neither of them are named Carr.
Mallet will probably go on to become Brady's successor in a few years, and will probably have a solid career. In an offense that he's been in his entire career. On a team built for him. In a city that can hide his off-the-field concerns.
He comes to Cleveland, he fucks up one time, he throws one costly interception, and the city turns on him. I don't see him being able to handle that. Joe Haden is a city favorite and one of the best at his position and there were people calling for him to be released after the Jacksonville game. Mallet wouldn't be able to handle that.

now you sound like an idiot couch.
check out geno 'your boy smith' in NY. gets booed and railed out of time every other sunday.
a hero one day a zero the next.

Mallett has one year left on his deal and almost certainly plans to be a starter somewhere this year or the next... not three or four years from now when Brady retires and Mallett's like 30. No way. Not happening. Pats trade him now or lose him in a year.
If the Browns do want Carr, it might be in a trade up with the Falcons or Redskins, something like that. #6 overall and our 2nd round pick for the #3. I don't know that he's the guy but right now, today, that feels like a logical scenario. Most believe the Browns stockpiled picks to get the guy they want... and that means at QB, not guard (!).
-
I still find threads like this kind of confounding. I'll get if you ask 100 NFL insiders, 101 will say the Browns next draft pick will be a quarterback because one guy brings a note from a colleague. I don't really think there's the slightest chance in hell it doesn't happen. I sincerely don't.
Browns will pick somewhere around 6th and have a TON of artillery to move up if they want/need to.
-
They'll draft a QB, he'll start 3-7, and we'll be told he needs time to develop and he's making strides. In 2 years he'll be 7-16 and we'll have a guy at the end of his career at QB....sound familiar? Starting a rookie QB on a losing team RARELY works but the Holmgren's of the world think they have the next Andrew Luck and only they no about it.
