For all those - Cysko, I'm looking at you - who are saying "I'd respect Islam more if they spoke out about ISIS"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/24/muslim-scholars-islamic-state_n_5878038.html
I'm sure some are allergic to following a huffington post link (I jest, people are just lazy) so here's the first several paragraphs.
WASHINGTON (RNS) More than 120 Muslim scholars from around the world joined an open letter to the “fighters and followers” of the Islamic State, denouncing them as un-Islamic by using the most Islamic of terms.
Relying heavily on the Quran, the 18-page letter released Wednesday (Sept. 24) picks apart the extremist ideology of the militants who have left a wake of brutal death and destruction in their bid to establish a transnational Islamic state in Iraq and Syria.
Even translated into English, the letter will still sound alien to most Americans, said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council of American-Islamic Relations, who released it in Washington with 10 other American Muslim religious and civil rights leaders.
“The letter is written in Arabic. It is using heavy classical religious texts and classical religious scholars that ISIS has used to mobilize young people to join its forces,” said Awad, using one of the acronyms for the group. “This letter is not meant for a liberal audience.”
Even mainstream Muslims, he said, may find it difficult to understand.
Awad said its aim is to offer a comprehensive Islamic refutation, “point-by-point,” to the philosophy of the Islamic State and the violence it has perpetrated. The letter’s authors include well-known religious and scholarly figures in the Muslim world, including Sheikh Shawqi Allam, the grand mufti of Egypt, and Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, the mufti of Jerusalem and All Palestine.
A translated 24-point summary of the letter includes the following: “It is forbidden in Islam to torture”; “It is forbidden in Islam to attribute evil acts to God”; and “It is forbidden in Islam to declare people non-Muslims until he (or she) openly declares disbelief.”
This is not the first time Muslim leaders have joined to condemn the Islamic State. The chairman of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, Aiman Mazyek, for example, last week told the nation’s Muslims that they should speak out against the “terrorist and murderers” who fight for the Islamic State and who have dragged Islam “through the mud.”
It goes on, and you can find a translation of the letter through that link as well.

Im surprised that liberal douches like you in great britain would bypass your very own Pat Condell's take on the "scholars" LOL

There is that, yes, never heard of the guy. And the logic that because he's British I should agree with whatever he has to say is, shall we say, somewhat flawed.

First, chris, I never said I didn't respect islam. As usual I straddle the fence on the issue. I'm terribly terribly interested in history and thus have a pretty fair base of kknowledge of Islamic history. I've known many many very pleasant muslims specifically during my time in new york city where I frequented Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn where there was a quite large muslim community adjacent to where I worked and even though at that point I was newly out of the service we managed to be quite cordial to each other and I would frequently enter their stores, unbearded and bold and purchase goods from them.
Second: 120 scholars is a drop in the hat buddy. The middle east needs to rise up against them and destroy them not cower in fear. It's THEIR lives which are most at risk and yet they are doing a really poor job of fighting for them and abroad where isis is making gains with the disenfranchised youth the elders are doing a shit job of containing it.

I'm not going to pretend I know who's who in the muslim world - maybe Osiris can help - but:
he letter’s authors include well-known religious and scholarly figures in the Muslim world, including Sheikh Shawqi Allam, the grand mufti of Egypt, and Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, the mufti of Jerusalem and All Palestine
That would seem to me to be some people with about as much authority as anyone to speak on it.

So because someone doesn't know who your lover boy is, they must somehow be at odds with the opinions of said lover boy?

You are correct, these are the top leaders in the Muslim world, particularly the grand mufti of Egypt as the educational center of Islam is Al-Azhar University in Egypt. What Cisco is asking for, I presume as he comes from a military background, is a call to arms from moderate Muslims to fight the extremists. I actually agree wholeheartedly with him in spirit. I'm just not optimistic it will ever happen. Where will this movement come from? Where will they get weapons? Who will train them? Keep in mind the governments of these countries will oppose, not support, them. Many people in the middle-east have been tamed into submission by the dictator overlords the USA has supported over the years. So it falls on the governments that have controlled the people to combat ISIL and their ilk.
Another huge problem in the ME is one of unity. Years of divide & conquer there, combined with lack of resources that promotes competition over cooperation, have led to Arab countries being able to unite against the terrorist threat as effectively as everyone would like. Unfortunately, It is ingrained in the very fabric of the culture now.
