Gipper Antonio brown isn't a special receiver and Hawkins is better after the catch? Seriously?

West and Crowell are just as good as Bell? Neither have any sort of footing in reality.

I believe that what thenew23 said was that Brown, without BR throwing to him, would not be so special. That a special QB can make a WR seem special. I am assuming that he may be comparing him say to Josh Gordon. Brown has a HOF QB pitching him the ball. Two years ago, when Gordon was breaking all kinds of receiving records, he had Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden throwing the ball. What do you think Gordon could have done if he partnered with an actual good to great QB?

That does not mean though that you are wrong....Brown has proven to be a big play guy.

And I think he said that West and Crowell have potential as a combination to excel. They were both rookies, sharing duties after all.

Let's see how the two of them did combined as rookies vs. what Bell did as a rookie:

    Carries: Bell 244 W/C 319

    Yards: Bell 860 W/C 1280

    TDs: Bell 8 W/C 12

    YPC: Bell 3.5 W/C 4.0

    YPG: Bell 66.2 W/C 86

As rookie runners, W/C outperformed Bell's combined rookie rushing stats.

Now, here is how their rookie stats compare to Bell's stats this past year:

    Carries Bell 290 W/C 319

    Yards: Bell 1361 W/C 1280

    TDs: Bell 8 W/C 12

    YPC: Bell 4.7 W/C 4.0

    YPG: Bell 85.1 W/C 86.

Of course you can say that you should not compare one player to two. Perhaps fair enough, but remember W/C did not start out as the primary ball carrier for the Browns. That was Ben Tate. And his stats are not included here.

So, Bell's stats for his second year are nearly identical to those of the West/Crowell combination....as rushers.

( I did not include Bell's and W/Cs pass catching stats.....I suspect Bell would have done better there.)

So, if thenew23 said that W/C were just as good as Bell......he would be right on. Bell's advantage was in YPC. But yards/ypg/TDs all statistically similar.

Bell got hurt as a rookie and his most recent performance was dominant. Brown would be a monster on any football team. He runs arguably the best routes in the league. He's consensus top 5 and some list him as number one. The new said some stupid shit. It cannot be defended. Edit: bell also caught 83 balls for almost 900 yards.
  • The big advantage Bell had is definitely in the receiving game this past year:

    Bell 83 catches 854 yards, 10.3 ypc, 53.4 ypg 3 TDs

    W/C 20 catches 151 yards 7.7 ypc 12.0 ypg 1 TD

I don't know, but I suspect it is possible that Bell may have had the best receiving stats for a RB in the league.

He said that West and Crowell combined were as good as Bell.

The stats listed above....sans receiving....show he was just about dead on and his statement there perfectly defensible.

Would Brown be a monster playing with the QBs the Browns have? Not so sure....maybe.

Maybe.....but he has a long, long, long, long, long way to catch up with yinz.

And, you never know....under the Browns new OC maybe those guys can come close to duplicating in their secons season what Bell did in his second in receiving.

Depends on the offense and the quality of the QB throwing it to him.

It really doesn't. Bell runs receiver quality routes. He would put up ridiculous numbers in Cleveland too.

I don't spout off blindly Gipper. I don't need to do self reflecting. You and others have been calling for the fall of the steelers for as long as I've been on the board.

    Yes.....probably....

So, in your mind there should be no difference in who is throwing the ball to a WR or RB? That seems to be what you are claiming.

Lack of insight? Hilarious. Running backs and in most cases tight ends are safety valves for qbs experienced or inexperienced. It is completely different when talking about receivers. Bell would be good anywhere and Brown for the sake of argument is a phenom after the catch. Either would excel with every team in the league. Short dump offs = profit.

Nonresponsiveness is another symptom of psychosis. Nevertheless.....are you saying that Bell got almost all his yards pass catching on short dumpoffs? 832 yards worth?

If it is so easy to do for any half assed QB even, then why didn't the Browns do much of it? Our two guys combined got what? 150 yards? And Ben Tate only had 9 catches for 60 yards.

So? Why is your one RB getting 832 yards receiving and our 3 guys getting just over 200 combined?

Bell runs receiver quality routes to get open and he's much better at catching the football than west and crowell. Just as he's much better in the open field. He certainly didn't only catch short dump offs but his yards after catch I would assume were substantial.

    Edit:http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/receiving/sort/receivingYardsAfterCatch

Bell was second only to Matt forte.

Well, that he is better may be a product of the time of offense they ran. The Browns guys have hardly had the opportunity to do the same. Bell certainly has been more productive in the pass game.....because imo, to a certain extent, the Steelers offense is heavily tailored to getting him the ball in open space. Which is good. You have something that works, use it.

One of my criticisms of Shanahan's offense last year was that he NEVER seemed to want the RBs to be much of a part of the receiving game. It seemed to me that it was only on rare occasion that the RB was used as an outlet receiver. And screen passes to our RBs was almost non-existant. As noted earlier, Tate had only 9 receptions, Crowell had only 9, West only 11. 29 catches vs. 83 for Bell. That number goes beyond talent. It was definitely Shanahan's purpose to de-emphasize RBs in the pass game.

You reach, reach, reach until you can find something to hang your bs on...watch bell's highlights. He creates the space and Haley does a nice job.
