Bubble players....who stays or goes....

I hope so........he seems to have some of the traits that Cameron had in terms of being a deeper faster more athletic threat...
Designated seam threat and redzone big body...
Housler's raw, which is not an adjective you want still associated with a fifth-year player. But he has the advantage over Cam of being cheap so we can afford to take a shot on him breaking out...
nope.....OL aren't allowed to catch passes on most plays, actually.....but there is a popular sneak they like use ala the ole "tackle eligible" play.....
OL can quietly report in as an eligible receiver in some situations(dont know what they are tho)....and then pop out for a quick pass..........
Situations like when the offense has the ball? Once an ineligible player reports as eligible he remains eligible until he reports a change back or leaves the field. And since the advent of field mics on the Ref, the announcement is no longer very quiet.

Why don't they just all report as eligible then? Just in case.

There's only 5 eligible receivers (6 if you count the QB, which technically he is once another eligible receiver touches the ball) on the field at a time, and they can't be "covered" by another player on their team.
So the two players at either end of the field are eligible receivers and anyone in the backfield is considered an eligible receiver.

With seven men required to be on the line five have to be ineligible by definition.
Plus it is now illegal for an eligible player to line up in an illegible position without reporting as ineligible... thanks to the Pats.

I tend to favor guys we've already invested time in while some of our late round picks/undrafted rookies can begin on the practice squad. Very happy about an active roster of 54.
all things being equal....me too.............Carder is a good example. Not so sure Pullard will beat him out, simply due to his lack of experience...
though, the GOOD part about new guys making the roster is that it typically indicates an upgrade.....so, to that end, I want as many new names as possible....

Those upgrades are always welcome. I'm wondering how many of our draftees will make the active roster and how many will be either starting or seeing significant time.
Not to be redundant; but I'm going to re-link my favorite overview (below) of our draft class because it gets pretty in-depth on each guy. I loved hearing Jimmy O'Neil say that our Offensive Line Coaches Andy Moeller & George DeLeone told him something along the line of Orchard was just ruining tape of several top offensive line prospects.

I think we'll be surprised with Housler's production this year.

It wasn't a bad signing at all Couch.
I remember back when we brought Steve Heiden here thinking it's hard to get too excited about the role we had waiting for him. Man, was I ever wrong about that. This guy had VERY underrated hands and caught some clutch passes. That said, we used him a lot to help set the edge for our running game way more than we could use Winslow in that role. What I liked most about all that is when he was in - we weren't tipping a tendency like we did with Winslow. When Winslow was in - everybody knew we weren't using him to block. When Heiden was in, defenses would think we were setting the edge and then he'd get open and make a clutch catch for us. He was a very effective/reliable dual purpose TE here.

Browns must have been eavesdropping on this convo, as an article talking about this just popped up.....sounds like Flip is mixing it up.......
3) Offensive formations have been interesting
Tight end Rob Housler
was lined up as the outside receiver on more than one occasion. All 6-foot-5 of wide receiver Rodney Smith
stood in the slot and hauled in a 20-yard pass a on seam pattern in the middle of the field. A passing drill had Terrance West
at receiver. Another formation had Mayle in the backfield as a running back before he split in motion out wide.“Flip’ (offensive coordinator John DeFilippo) has some unique things that he’s putting in that, just looking at them from a defensive perspective, are very challenging,” Pettine said.
-
It's a good article...
I liked the notes on K'waun:
- When K’Waun Williams broke up a pass on Andrew Hawkins – at least his third breakup of the day – defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil literally busted out an Irish dance jig and screamed, “Not in his house Hawk! Not in K’Waun’s house.” The Browns also used Williams in a variety of blitz packages throughout the OTA. Pettine said perhaps nobody’s leap in 2015 has been as noticeable as the second-year cornerback.
- “A lot of it’s just a credit to him that he took that time from January to April,” Pettine said. “You could see he looks different physically. He’s bigger, but he’s leaner. He’s moving better. It’s great to see him go against Hawk in the slot. Those are some of the battles I look forward to the most watching during practice.”

I think they drafted very SMART guys who love the game, and are versatile.
Even a sixth round TE/FB/HB kind of guy could really add some different looks
to the offense:

Slater is my vote for this year's Taylor Gabriel. Without even taking so much as a look at him, I feel like he's not only going to make the team, but he'll be a plus contributor and will get some looks.

He was on a few "diamond in the rough" posts pre-draft. 6'5", 295, sub 5 second 40 time. Played division II ball and dominated in the trenches, despite originally being a WR going into college.
He packed on about 80 lbs of pure muscle over the last two-three years. Guy looks like he's carved out of stone and seems to be a gym rat.
His technique is sloppy, his pad height is too high and he basically won most of his battles by overpowering at the point of attack, but he has solid inside pass rush moves and his pursuit is above average. He has a nose for the ball and there's multiple times where he disappears into a sea of players, fights his way through and finishes the play.
He'll need refinement, but subbing in against our OL in practice should greatly help smooth out some rough edges.
He'll need to put on about 15 more pounds to be a perpetual inside player, but I think the FO likes him more for his athletic ability and clean up. I expect him to play primarily edge and ocassionally bump into a 3-tech, depending on the package.

Great....thanks or taking the time on that......D2 players are always intriguing, cause you just never know......Coaches have a lot of sorting out to do on the DL,.... ..
But your point about our OL is great,,,,they are good enough to really test these guys and expose the players vs posers.....
lots of questions and surprises yet to come with this DL.....thats for sure!

When Hofstra had a football program there were 2 NFL teams happy they had WRs like Wayne Chrebet and Marques Colston.
The Buffalo Bills team that went to 4 straight AFC Championship Games found a DII WR named Andre Reed from Kutztown State. They also drafted Don Beebe out of Chadron State and found TE Pete Metzlaars from Wabash State's basketball team.
If you have the right scouting dept that knows exactly what it's looking for in a player - I lived in Western, NY when Buffalo was finding a nice assortment of small school guys to go with their big name stars like Bruce Smith, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Cornelius Bennett, and Shane Conlin and others. The last AFC team to knock them off before their run was our Cleveland Browns thanks to 2 gigantic momentum busters from Clay Matthews' INT at the goal and Eric Metcalf's kickoff return for a TD. I keep wondering about how much bellyaching we'd be hearing about Justin Gilbert if we tapped his return game skills in any of those air tight games we lost 2nd half leads or late tie scores in. Metcalf's ultimate value was never the position he was drafted to play - it was in his ability to beat Pittsburgh by 2 returns for scores on a day we got outplayed or in the playoff game I just spoke of.
That could have come in handy vrs Jax when we had an early lead, lost it, and decided to wing it throwing Poyer out there to misjudge a punt giving Jax the ball inside our 10 yard line. Not much to question with our coaching staff in 2014 except that; and whoever watched JJ Watt on film deciding he was the weakest link to exploit while an 8 time Pro Bowl Tackle like Joe Thomas had a rookie he outweighed by about 50 pounds as a refreshing alternative to getting tackled for losses all day. I kept hoping an alarm clock would wake me up from that Houston game.

Browns definitely need to audition people for kick and punt return duties.
The head scratcher for me last year was the fact while Gilbert wasn't being very productive as a DB, why didn't they give him some return duties? He was one of the best in college when he played, no?
Were they just trying to protect their #8 overall investment?

I think last year they were satisfied with Moore as the kick returner, so no reason to change up.......
It was "punt" returner that we really had issues with and Gilbert has never done that.....plus, returning punts is pretty dangerous, so yes, I think that they did want to protect the higher pick from that risk.....
They're working out new guys though...
OTA's has Benji, Tramon and Duke working at punt returner....
And Benji, Gilbert and Duke working at kick returner....
