speaking of excuses for manziel.......ummmm, the propettine crowd in here makes more excuses for mccown than any player I've ever seen. Dude is 2-38473837837373783 in his last however many games and all I hear is how he is a warrior or that he's never a reason for the 38473xxxxxxxxxxx losses. Or that he doesnt have enough time to throw. Or 40 other excuses to account for his unbelievably consistent ability to LOSE FOOTBALL GAMES in numerous different settings.

Mostly directed at bbedward. Yeah- that crummy Defense, and not having any legit targets other than Barnidge and Benjamin.

OHOH, he directly lost the Denver game throwing a pick six, and taking two consecutive sacks in OT. The folly floater int against the Cards, a bad handoff to Turbin. Seriously- his only really good game was against the Ravens.

On the surface, his stats look really good- but if you use ESPN's total qbr- he's barely average. And not at all to my surprise, he's DEAD LAST in the NFL in taking sacks that kill drives- so I suppose his defenders are going to want to blame his offensive line for not protecting him well enough, or his shitty receivers can't get open- instead of the obvious he holds onto the ball too damn long, or he's too slow going through his progressions. He's not particularly accurate, and hate to say it- Manziel throws a better more accurate deep ball than Josh. I posted after the Rams game, Monday morning I was watching ESPN break down the Patriots- Jets game. Couple of times the Jets threw a 10 man jailhouse blitz at Brady- and both times he beat it. MHO- we would have seen Josh get buried under those circumstances.

Come on guys- I think we all know what a decent qb looks like- and despite his stats, McCown doesn't pass the eye test of being one. Johnny must totally suck if Pettine thinks a career backup with a 18-38, and a recent 2-16 record is the ticket to winning games.

That said, I really think it's unfair to JFF to toss him in as the starter on a short week, on the road, against a team some pundits are picking to go to the Super Bowl. The Bungles are going to want revenge for the pasting they took last year in prime time. Our only hope is Dalton plays to form sucking when the bright light come on.

    That's his job.
Otherwise your post is a fine opinion, but I think McCown has looked decent despite the circumstances. McCown has been a high quality Brown so far - even if average talent he has given us enough to win games if we didn't suck everywhere else.
If you're already tossing out "unfair, tough situation" regarding Johnny's start on Thursday then I disagree. McCown would be getting the same amount of practice time, after getting his ass beat, in the same situation and nobody would call it a "tough, unfair situation"
It's a tough situation, but it isn't unfair - I hope he excels and gets us the win, and me a 6 pack 😉

You are lying *yet again*. I know what you said. You know what you said. There is a freaking record of what you said.

You're a fucking idiot. Does anybody think this is a big deal? It wasn't a mathemetical error you fucking idiot I was making the general point that our defense gives up a lot of points based on my memory of the games - which I admit isn't photographic and are usually followed by excessive drinking so I don't tend to remember the exact scores every time

The point is the exact same, defense gave up 20-30+ points in 5/8 games and is ranked #26 in the NFL in that area. Sound better fluffing it up a bit?

I don't have the "advance stats" page up in front of me all the time to constantly reference, OK?

    @tacosman said:

The bungles are a good team no doubt. But I dont see them as some juggernaught. They could easily have a couple(or even 3) losses by now. I wouldnt be shocked if we win thursday....we have a 25-33% chance imo.

    Advanced stats?

Here's one set of "advanced stats', and they're sortable. http://espn.go.com/nfl/qbr

OK, I'll drop the "unfair". Johnny's been itching to start all year- and at any rate he's currently healthier than Josh.

It's fine and I think McCown is just decent, good sometimes, one of the best we had since 99' probably. I have a lot of respect for the way he's played and has conducted himself.

By many of those advanced stats, Brian Hoyer is pretty damn elite, Cam Newton is pretty damn bad. Sometimes there's more to the story, Tacosman cherry picks a few stats to explain how McCown is bad and ignores the ones that are good.

I hope Johnny does very well Thursday, but I will not concede my belief that McCown is not the biggest factor in our losses so far - we've lost games despite some nice performances from him - Denver being the biggest exception and Denver's offense was more parts bad that game than our defense was parts good.

  • Listening to Pet's conference ... going to have to change the heading back to a question.

Not sure how smart it is to throw Manziel in against a team that destroyed him last year.

Ha!....there's never a "smart" time to play Johnny....or so it seems.....

Last year we put him in too soon(even tho it was week 10??)....or too late(because the team had quit?).....or without first team reps(even tho he's the BU)....and now?.....dont play him because its a team he lost to last year?......

Instead of protecting him from the big bad Bengals, who beat him up last season....how about him stepping up and serving a little payback?....and showing us he's learned something and is truly better than last year?.....eh?.......or does he still need a silver platter to play and win....?

Really, Z... the reporting was based upon who was taking reps... in Practice!

    Practice? We talkin' about practice?

Last week JM also took 1st team reps. Did he start?

Are you really unable to distinguish what...

Nevermind... you aren't able... but one request...

If you are really just going to sing this same tune over and over and over, then can you at least vary the beat? throw in a falsetto? do something to change it up?

  • If he took 1st team reps in practice last week is it really a tough situation for him?

Fresh legs, I think it's a good situation. And I stand by my prediction we will win.

  • Lets start McCown so he gets fucking paralyzed and then put in JFF. You guys are fucking sick.

If we traded JT JM may have gotten paralyzed after Thursday.

But I have no idea what you're saying.

  • Tithe Browns are 2-6! What the hell do they have,to lose? Are the fans really paying to see McCown? Is it the fans fault the Browns passed on Carr? Bridgewater?

Play Manziel even though it's a short week and he hasn't had much prep time. At least we will have something to look forward to my God!

Are you completely sure about this? It seems there are quite a few posters around here who want to be able to say "I told you so" every single week.

It's just taking the rose colored glasses off Mark- it's called being "objective" and not a hopeless homer. Didn't I tell you in the Tavern you could have my season tickets for the next time you're in town if the Browns kept it within (I think 3, I was drinking heavily at the time). Seems like my radar was right on- I don't like losing anymore than you do, but apparently Pettine didn't get the memo NFL games are 60 minutes long, not 30- and it isn't too smart to keep putting a damaged quarterback out there who's going three and out, three and out, rinse wash repeat- and tosses up a soft floater to the end zone on a bum shoulder that got picked off.

There you go again.... "Didn't I tell you?" "seems like my radar was right on". There's no fucking prize for you predicting failure for the team. You don't win shit. And what if I want to wear fucking rose colored glasses? Who the fuck are you or any of you other negative dickweeds to tell me that I should give up and be "objective". You "objective" people suck and must lead miserable lives that a fucking football team that you watch in your spare time makes you so miserable.

I'll be objective in the offseason....in the meantime I'll root for my team to win every week and not bet or pick against them or predict that they're going to lose when up by 10 points at halftime just so I can say "i told you so".

We're going to kick the Bengals ass even if Johnny plays.

    10-6

Fuck being objective. My rose colored glasses fit perfectly.

I'll take that bet.... Browns lose every game for the rest of the year and finish 2-14 and I'll leave the board, never to return. Browns win just one game to make your asinine prediction wrong, and you leave here never to return.

Deal? Put your money where your mouth is big talker. You were leaving 2 weeks ago and yet you;re still here whining like a little baby.

  • He won't take that bet Mark. Dude doesn't have the balls... All mouth.

  • Mark, I don't see how you can lose that bet. Lose 'em all?....No way.

I think we'll see Johnny Thursday. McCown seems pretty beat up. I've had broken ribs & bruised ribs before. BREATHING is an adventure. Even with painkillers, you know the Bengals will POUND his chest & shoulder. I'm for letting McCown heal & also seeing what we have in Johnny so we have a better idea of how to proceed in planning next year's draft.

    Mike

  • Let's kill these cunts. Fuck cinci.

  • It's time to let the two first round draft picks play. At 2-6 you would need a miracle to get to the playoffs. So

It's time to start not only Manziel for the rest of the year but Gilbert too. He's returning punts while our secondary is out with injuries. Joe Haden has another concussion and has played poorly. The answer:

Throw caution to the wind and let the young guys play. Gilbert can't be as bad as Bademosi was Sunday.

Play all the guys you drafted and get an idea for next year.

Maybe Farmer isn't the problem. I for one would like to see what the Browns have on their roster before another dumpster fire.

Eight games into the second year is ample time to finally take the leash off our Franchise quarterback and first round cornerback. Mariota, Carr, Bridgewater didn't have to wait for a stubborn coach to relent.

Because watching every Sports show on television showing McCown writhing in pain two games in a row is enough embarrassment. It speaks volumes about our Coach Pettine and his unwillingness to take a chance on Manziel when McCown wasn't able to even get off the cement on the sideline.

And where was Farmer? Who's the one risking their job at the end of the day? I'd say it's Pettine.

Mark, don't get all pissed off if I see things differently. (and correctly) If I wasn't a real fan, I could save myself a lot of time (moderating this board) and money (season tickets + Directv Sunday Ticket). The Browns have been my fall passion since the late 1950s, and sorry if I'm getting a tad tired of the almost continual shit show I've seen from the Browns since 1999. Ya think it's all wonderful driving 220 miles home after I've seen the Browns turn in yet another stinking performance? In case you didn't know it, my name is up there on that wall in the SW corner of the stadium as a founding PSL member, and I've been a member of the Dayton Browns Backers since their inception. The guy I have my season tickets with has already checked out, and put his seats up for sale on NFL ticket exchange he's so disgusted with the entire situation. No playoffs since 2002, and not even a winning record since 2007. Yeah- it's been so f**cking long, I had to look those numbers up. Excuse me I have higher expectations for a return on my investment of time and money. So sure I could lead a lot happier life Sunday fall afternoons if I (as so many others have done) just throw in the towel on this dumpster fire of a team and go out on nice long bike rides in the beautiful fall weather. But for whatever reason, I'll keep hoping against hope for at least an occasional win, and some season before I croak that this team can be a Super Bowl contender again.

Sounds like you like being on the deck of the Titanic- thinking everything is going to work out just fine this year when Team Browns just hit yet another iceberg and is taking on water fast. So when are you Pollyannas going to admit- the fact that the Browns were even discussing trading their best player for peanuts is a tacit admission they've already shit canned this season, and are looking to 2016?

  • "It speaks volumes about our Coach Pettine and his unwillingness to take a chance on Manziel when McCown wasn't able to even get off the cement on the sideline. "

Maybe it speaks volumes about Manziel?

  • JFF starting Thursday. Seems like Haslam had a talk with Pettine and how close he is to losing his job no doubt.
