  • There are plenty of kids that want nothing to do with math /science /engineering, and that is before cost factors in.

We shouldn't limit that pool any more

of course not, there's business, AG and teaching just to name a few that are "extremely" important. But if you're gonna sell the notion of free college tuition to the American public...it has to revolve around degrees we really see a ROI with. I see no problem with asking kids to get a degree or trade skill that has immediate usefulness AND makes them some cash. With which they can then go back in a few years and get what they want. Seems reasonable to me. I'm not pooing on history or philo. degrees but should we be paying for them?

  • the surest way to kill off the idea is to say we'll have no problem subsidizing the Van Wilders.

  • In 2013 about 70% of graduates averaged 28 grand in debt.

If they had any kind of useful and marketable skill it shouldn't be a huge hardship to pay off the price of a reasonably nice car for a lifetime of employment.

  • There is not enough job creation happening. I don't see how anyone supporting Bernie Sanders could believe huge taxation on business and job creators will do anything but hurt the already poor job growth.

If you tax away the American dream what incentive is there for an employer? What incentives are there to start a business if the profits are going to be taxed away? Maybe Bernie can get some students free college but then what? Where are they going to work at with no jobs to go to? Move to China?

I want to see an environment where young people have that American dream in front of them that if they work hard and smart and willing to risk their own money there can be a nice payoff. Without that incentive why would anyone even want to start a business?

  • Exactly. Why would I want to be rich if taxes meant I would be slightly less rich?

Yeeeeaaahhhhh I think you're overplaying the taxes thing

  • 90% is slightly less rich? Seriously? Some engineers may not be good at math?

Don't think so Woody. Many businesses fail if not most. There is no government bail out for the small business owner that fails and it is all risk/reward.

  • It's said we already have the highest business tax globally.

You jack that to 90%,and the dumb idea that the businesses

    won't leave is nonsense.

  • Wait wut? What is this 90% thing? Is this something that snopes has already debunked?

  • One thing to consider, if college graduates today aren't able to find suitable employment that would equal to the amount of education they have now, what makes anyone think that a free college degrees for every citizen would be beneficial?

Workers are capital steve. What is capitalism without capital right? If workers don't have the skills for available jobs, that's a problem. But people can't just go running back to college any old time they feel like it can they? Mainly cause it costs a lot of money. If education were free or at least in good part subsidized, we could be a more nimble work force. And that means a better econ for everyone. It really is a win win IF the skills being subsidized are what business's need/want.

That's pretty damn funny. But.....he's not wrong. Just might not be the right way to get there, but he isn't wrong.

Oh it could shake out that way, but I don't see it. If the labor force is already balking at hiring people with degrees I don't see why more people with degrees would make them more attractive? And it's not really going back to school even though I'm not sure what positions would be available to workers who did go back? I don't know how many research scientist we need. Nor how many people would decide to go through that program even if it was free. I would bet the tech savvy kids are already going to college under student loans and not worrying about the cost until later.

And if we're all free to follow our muse on Mr Sanders dime I can always go back and get a masters in theater. I will then apply for the lead role in the next Jennifer Aniston movie. We'll see how that works 😉

ok well we've been over this so no more bringing up degrees like theatre or whatnot. Only skillsets/degrees that business's say there are looking for. I'm not on board with Sanders idea of making anything and everything free of charge.

Guess what, every subject here has been repeated ad nauseum. Anyway go ahead tell the kids who want to go into fashion design social work basket weaving art history that they can't go because were only writing checks to lawyers, engineers and research scientists, at least the ones who think man-made global warming is a threat to the planet. 😉

yeah well we're gonna have to. Fashion design is all nice and stuff, but it can't be heavily subsidized if at all. I dunno, maybe if this country finally got a clue and brought back hemp we could have a thriving textile industry again and fashion designers could be more useful designing more normal clothes. So what i'm getting it is that what today seems not useful could theoretically be useful in the future. So there has to be a periodic re examination of what subsidize and what we don't. It's all on business's and what they need.

I know. You are correct. I'm just pointing out reality to you chum.

Go ahead, leave out the fashion designers and the actress and the social workers.

See how long it takes you to be branded a homophobe a misogynist and a racist.
