RG3 set to be a Brown ?

  • He's the type of low risk, high reward signing that would make sense for an analytic-driven FO.

His injury concerns are...concerning (for lack of a better word). But, say he were to start six games, do mildly well, then get injured. How would we be any worse off than we currently are? We'd then be trotting out McCown, which is acceptable to many in here already.

The only way I see this RG3 + 2nd overall QB working is if Hue truly wants this QB to sit....so he puts two people between the rookie and the field.

  • Rg3 would be no more than a bridge qb and he knows it up front. They hope to get 10-16 games outa him and not really more. Mcown will be 37 in july and is quite injury prone. Broken collarbone, ribs and head last year. He was brought in as a bridge qb too. They will trade him if rg3 signs. They do not want to start their drafted qb until he gets coached up. That will be the hc job and not rg3s. He gets a shot until the kid is readier. Nothing more.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I think it's safe to say our OL will take a step backwards next year, and do you really want an old QB playing behind a leaky line? If you're McCown, do YOU really want to play that way? Our franchise is obviously making a pretty drastic "youth movement" right now, and given that philosophy, it kind of makes sense that McCown will be let go. Well, we just put analytics guys in charge and brought in a QB guru who specializes in young QBs ... so I think that should tell you where a 37 year old career backup stands.

I like the guy. He plays with heart and he still has a live arm. Good locker room guy. But he was a placeholder/mentor for Johnny ... he goes down with Johnny just like everyone else did. New guys will start clean at the QB position.

Not to mention the quarterbacks Hue Jackson has recently been enamored by. Don't forget he has already damned Josh McCown with faint praise.

I would be surprised to see him remain on the roster.

  • Is it possible that we are setting up a back-up to reflect our drafted QB's skillset?

    • If Wentz, then an RG (or CK) signing would seem to do that.
    • If Goff, then sticking with McC would seem to make sense.
    On another note...

I've really started to enjoy former TB GM, Mark Dominik's comments on NFL Insiders... particularly when he starts laying out his sales pitch to a FA.

For RG3 he said he'd push hard on the line of a one-year deal to resurrect his career under the tutelage of one of the NFL's better QB minds, Hue, while our future QB is polished in the wings for 2017. When we say thanks and part ways with RG wishing him luck.

  • I do believe that the Browns need a veteran presence at QB. If they sign RG and draft a QB at #2 or later, we still need that veteran presence....even in a backup role. Having RG, Shaw, Davis, draft pick, plus even Pryor as WR/Emergency QB...does not give us that presence.

Pryor has to make it as a WR. Shaw/Davis likely ultimately expendable. Having RG initially as starter McCown as backup, plus rookie plus Pryor as only Emergency backup seems to me to be the way to go with our ultimate QB plan.

Mark Dominik's career arc is the one I wanted to emulate so badly...except for the failure as GM. He was basically just this marketing undergrad who loved football. Cool story IMO.

I don't disagree with that pitch. Cleveland is one of the few spot, if not the only one, that would outright give away a starting spot. RG3 almost needs Cleveland more than Cleveland needs him.

The only thing I'm worried about is....what if he has a Pro Bowl season?

  • Why?

  • Why?

    @tour2ma said:

    Why?

It would possibly put us in a scenario where would try to retain him, because Pro Bowl QB seasons are few and far between.

  • lol... sorry, the "Why?" was meant for another... but since you replied...

The risk of our "losing" a Pro Bowl season is part of the package to benefit the player. It makes us/ our offer a great deal more attractive.

Personally I'd be fine with a one and done deal. I simply would not want to put our future QB on hold for another season... the future we draft at #2 this year.

Oh, I completely agree. The future won't be found in FA.

But my worry is that we draft the future, then ride the hot hand, which pisses off the future, so we trade the future thinking that we can ride the hot hand to the SB, then the hot hand cools and we're stuck without a QB...again.

  • Report: Teams expect Browns to sign RG3

    Mar 23 2016, 8:05 AMDavid P. Woods

It appears increasingly likely that Robert Griffin III will soon be a member of the Cleveland Browns.

A day after ESPN's Adam Schefter said the Browns are "definitely interested" in signing the former Washington Redskins passer, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported Wednesday that the prevailing feeling among NFL coaches and executives is that Griffin and the Browns will eventually reach a deal.

The Browns are said to be doing due diligence and digging deep into Griffin's eventful time with the Redskins to determine if he's a personality fit for new head coach Hue Jackson.

Jackson worked alongside Redskins head coach Jay Gruden with the Cincinnati Bengals, so it's likely the Browns will be able to use that connection to get the complete story of why Griffin's time in the nation's capital turned sour.

If the Browns are convinced there's nothing to Griffin's nature that makes it likely his time in Cleveland would end the same way, a deal could be struck.

    @tour2ma said:

    Why?

Because, like I said...it is a veteran presence. A fairly steady hand to turn to if things go wrong...or if someone is hurt.

You go into the season with the fragile RGIII...and he is backed up only by untested Shaw/Davis/rookie QB? Sure, it can be done....but wouldn't it be better to have McCown to turn to. RG isn't that old or experienced. Even if he is playing he could use his backup/player coach there next to him. Sure, he would have an OC and a QB coach and an HC etc......but this would help him, help the rookie, help the team.

How much is McCown costing? Not that much I don't think.

    Maybe a bit.

The upside potential is great and I have been quietly voicing my support for RG3 for more than a few seasons. Do I like RG3 as a prospect more than Wentz? I'm not sure.

I wonder if Sashi thinks that we can trade back from #2 to somewhere in the early teens and still conceivably nab Wentz, and RG3 is more of a hedging of his bets than anything else. Granted, I don't really see who would trade up, nor what they would trade up for, but I wonder if that scenario has been thrown out.

Time to come up with another far fetched scenario...

  • I'm listening to the radio show, and what they're saying is that it appears our management and coaches are not high on McCown, and he might be let go. they didn't look at sportrac? McCown only has $1 million guaranteed this year.

I don't think that the trade down scenario is thrown out at all. I think it may be enhanced. So say the Browns get RG. To me, that sends a signal that they may not in fact be taking a QB at #2.....but other teams may want to climb up there and be the first to grab one of those QBs. Dallas maybe, Rams, 49ers.

Other than Cowboys I am not sure what we could get from them.....but the Redskins with RG kinda set the market bar, no? Three first round picks?

If draft picks are the gold standard by which our analytics guys play....then that could be a treasure trove for them.

Totally agree....... No matter who we sign and/or draft. Josh had better be on the team.
