Actually, Cousins had a better statistical season in 2016 as opposed to 2017.  He WAS in the Top 5 in a number of statistical categories in 2016:

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2016/leaders.htm

And in 2015...he was actually a bit worse statistically then than he was in 2017.   He only occasionally appeared in the Top Ten of stats.  (major exception...he did lead the league in pass completion Pct.....about his only Top 5 appearance:

Don't overthink the Cousins thing.  Washington didn't want to commit to him long term; before they signed Alex Smith to a 94 million $ contract (71 million of it guaranteed). What do the Cousins fans know that that the team that drafted him couldn't possibly understand?

His team's record did NOT improve each of the last 3 years - it got worse each year regardless of the countless excuses I keep reading.   If people thought he didn't have anyone to throw to in Washington - have they even SEEN our WR Corps?

The ONLY thing that's going to reward this guy is a disappointing supply of veteran QBs for the demand.   Let the Buck Tooth Basssterd in Denver sign him to compete with his Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler.

I get your point, but WSH really effed up their relationship with Cousins (and his agent) over two years of fruitless negotiations.

I think that well was poisoned.

Agreed on Bradford- if he can stay healthy- the Vikes will likely keep Keenum and Teddy. As I posted in another thread interest in McCarron (I hope) would be close to nothing if he loses his hearing on being a UFA, and the Bengals slap a second round tender on him. I'd like to think Dorsey will tell Hue- not worth the #33- I don't care how much you like him.  They give him an original round tender- different story.

Ditto Gip's take on Fitzpatrick- he's not very good, but outside of the Po rah-rah pumpers does anyone really expect a lot of wins out of the Browns in 2018? I don't.

Didn't think McCown was a UFA, but if he's got another 2017 year production left in his 39 year old body, I'd welcome him back with open arms- and he'd be relatively cheap (last contract was for $7 million) and a perfect mentor for Darnold- or whoever we draft.

Sorry to tell the "win now" crowd, but I think you have to look at the remaining list for mentors first and players second.

Feels to me like that pushes the McCowns and Daniels up, and the Bradshaws and McCarrons down.

Harder to know what that does to Fitz, but I don't feel him being much of a mentor.

I assume you mean Bradford?..unless you want Terry in here/😉

Except he perfectly fits the mold.....Older (35) been around a lot.  Started a lot of games.  Won some. Supposedly smart (Hahvahd after all). Has little future as a starter. This type of job would seemingly be the only kind of job he would be wanted for.   Have you ever heard him express an attitude against helping a younger pup?

  • Interestingly....the lyrics to the song  have considerable relevance to the subject at hand:

When you're weary, feeling small  (Browns fans certainly)
When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all (all)
I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough  (who is having a rougher time?)
And friends just can't be found  (who is befriending the Browns?  no one)
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down
(we all agree that this "Bridge QB" must sacrifice himself for the greater good of the Browns, fair to say?)
    When you're down and out
    When you're on the street
    When evening falls so hard
(fits Browns fans to a T)
    I will comfort you (ooo)
I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes
(just what we need:  comfort...and someone to take our side in these dark times)
    And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down

Fer sure, as our Redskins visitors pointed out their FO publicly bad mouthed Kirk in previous negotiations. Were they being cheap? Had to know Cousins next contract would have to be bigger than what they gave Smith.

Yeah... when I think Bradshaw, mentor is not the first word that comes to mind.

On Fitz: have you ever heard him say he wants to mentor pups? Like I said, just a feeling.

Age and experience are qualifiers, but the desire to teach is even more important.

We are obviously polar opposites on this topic. For me I am absolutely baffled by the lack of love for Cousins among Browns fans. This is a sentiment shared by a couple of the Sirius NFL radio hosts as well. They were shocked by some of the callers lack of desire to get Cousins. Hell I saw someone on this board compare him to Tyrod Taylor!! Seriously LOL Tyrod friggin Taylor!!!!

    1) Washington signed Smith because they had both destroyed their relationship with Cousins AND Smith was a cheaper option for their cap

    2) His team record is exactly that a TEAM record. He is and will continue to be a top 10 QB and with weapons likely top 5

    3) Relative to "has he seen our WR corps". What matters isn't our corps last year but rather what we can give him this season. It is well within the realm of feasibility we could give him Gordon , Jarvis Landry , Coleman and a draft pick. Not to mention Duke and drafting Barkley

If Cousins was a mediocre as some of you think Washington would have never tagged him 2 years in a row. They painted themselves into a corner in which they could no longer afford him and they ruined their relationship with him.

Its called winning.   Like it or not.....QB is the only position on a football team for which they keep a win/loss count.

And for all of his fairly good statistical prowess....he is a below .500 QB.  26-30-1.  And THAT is why the Redskins have passed on giving him a long term deal. If his own team that drafted him does not have much faith in him.....why should everyone else.

Are you asking me that...or yourself?  I have answered it completely. in terms of his credentials...see above.

I think we all can remember seeing McC whether he was suited up or not sitting next to whatever kid was starting for us while our D was on the field. He was also standing on the sideline and watching "the kid" when the O was on the field. He was clearly engaged. That Hue offered him the QB Coach job said he was also good.

I think he was much younger than....and felt he was in a position to fight for long term starting status.

Supposedly backup and mentor were the roles Fitz was ready to accept in his move to TB. I haven't read anything about how that went... hopefully better than their season.

I think that is exactly what he has been doing for Winston.  Though...to be fair...your best argument against him is that Winston has regressed this year...and whatever advice/guidance Fitz has been giving him has apparently not sunk in.

Still an option until March 14th I believe. I also do not believe they have tried to tag and trade although I could be wrong. I think they were trying to string him along and cheap out on a deal. They run theirselves into the corner with the 3rd year tag worth about $34M and no non exclusive tag allowed per the CBA  on the 3rd consecutive tag.

I surely have to think you aren't saying Cousins is lazy? I've read he is literally OCD in his prep and conditioning. Cousins is a stud QB period. Team stats are meaningless.

Sure there's a general lack of interest in Cousins by Browns fans for about $150 million reasons. 🙂 The Patriots don't win Super Bowls by overpaying for talent. And Cousins is is going to get grossly overpaid- you might not care, but at this point in the Browns team building I'll bet they do. If we could sign Kirk for the $91 million, $70 million guaranteed that Smith got, sign me up.  $150 million $90 million guaranteed? Forget it. A couple extra wins in 2018 with Cousins doesn't do it for me- at the expense of taking the long view. This isn't like the Broncos who needed the final piece (Manning) in a QB, we're still miles away from competing.

    1) True, Redskins FO blew it, I don't think Cousins was without blame- it takes two to start a fight.

    2) So you just want the bird in the hand, and have zero confidence Dorsey can't draft some one better- maybe a lot better- than Cousins (Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield) who are not only 9 years younger, but also a damnsite cheaper for at least the next three years.

    3) You familiar with the computer term "vaporware"?  Cousins will probably be the first FA off the market- and you're going to try selling him on a roster that largely doesn't exist yet. 😆😆😆

Mediocre, no. Not worth the asking price, yes.  Question- would you have been screaming not worth it if we had offered KC ( a deal they certainly would have taken) the #33 this year and another second round pick in 2019?

And in regard to tagging and trading, that IIRC will take the Browns out of the picture. Franchise tag involves first round picks.  Not sure if you can tag a guy, work out a contract, take the tag off, and then trade him. Also the cap implications would be real fuzzy. Or are you so in love with Cousins the #1 overall and a first next year is worth it? That only works for a team like the Bills who have two low first round picks, and were actually a playoff team- remember Kirk saying he wants to play for a winner?

Not a fan of Mary Kay but this is it in a nutshell from the article...  http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/01/kirk_cousins_and_the_browns_wh.html#incart_big-photo

"To me, the only real connection between Cousins and the Browns is money and the fact that Cousins' first career start came against Cleveland back in 2012. Cousins is a quick fix, but is he a longterm solution? That's the question John Dorsey and Co. will have to answer between now and March."

So right off the bat lets just answer the Patriots thing, TOM BRADY and that is that 🙂

IMO he wont be getting grossly overpaid, he will be getting paid like a talent of his level at QB

    1) True, Redskins FO blew it, I don't think Cousins was without blame- it takes two to start a fight.

I don't just WANT to take bird in hand, this is a team and fan base thats survival is  absolutely is dependent on winning now ala QB bird in hand. I'd have been fine with Smith for this as well but without him its Cousins all the way. Also cheaper is a word that should be completely banned from all discussions within the FO and our board lol I am F'ing tired of cheap

    3) You familiar with the computer term "vaporware"?  Cousins will probably be the first FA off the market- and you're going to try selling him on a roster that largely doesn't exist yet. 😆😆😆

I am a professional seller so accustomed to selling value that is somewhat murky in the beginning. If we do not have someone in our FO that can convince Cousins our $118M in cap and historic level number of high draft picks can arm him with a superior WR corp and running backs then we better hurry up and hire that missing piece in the FO. That should be as easy as selling a $20 spot for a dollar.

Mediocre, no. Not worth the asking price, yes.  Question- would you have been screaming not worth it if we had offered KC ( a deal they certainly would have taken) the #33 this year and another second round pick in 2019?

Honestly if we could have gotten Smith for the #33 AND he would have signed a cap friendly 4 years I would have been very happy. Perhaps again I am in the minority.

And in regard to tagging and trading, that IIRC will take the Browns out of the picture. They cannot tag Cousins with the non exclusive tag which is the only tag that requires the two #1 picks. per the CBA you cannot use the non exclusive for a 3rd consecutive tagging. They can only either tag him with the exclusive tag or the transition tag. Neither would give them anything in regards to draft picks.

Then. I'll just say IMHO you're dead wrong, on both counts. That Browns survival doesn't depend on "win now at all costs". And it doesn't depend on landing Cousins either. If that's the direction the Browns decide to go, I'll support it. Just be prepared to be disappointed when Kirk decides the Bills, Broncos, or Cardinals are greener pastures.

We agree to disagree. All in all I am prepared to be disappointed on the  Cousins front. I am just standing by my contention that its a huge risk and likely mistake to not go balls to the wall to land him.
