  • Actually, Cousins had a better statistical season in 2016 as opposed to 2017.  He WAS in the Top 5 in a number of statistical categories in 2016:

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2016/leaders.htm

And in 2015...he was actually a bit worse statistically then than he was in 2017.   He only occasionally appeared in the Top Ten of stats.  (major exception...he did lead the league in pass completion Pct.....about his only Top 5 appearance:

Don't overthink the Cousins thing.  Washington didn't want to commit to him long term; before they signed Alex Smith to a 94 million $ contract (71 million of it guaranteed). What do the Cousins fans know that that the team that drafted him couldn't possibly understand?

His team's record did NOT improve each of the last 3 years - it got worse each year regardless of the countless excuses I keep reading.   If people thought he didn't have anyone to throw to in Washington - have they even SEEN our WR Corps?

The ONLY thing that's going to reward this guy is a disappointing supply of veteran QBs for the demand.   Let the Buck Tooth Basssterd in Denver sign him to compete with his Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler.

Not worth the $ or the cap space., even for a team so desperate for a competent QB to bridge a rookie.

While you are wishing for schidt that will never happen, why not put in a request for a new Breitling Chrono 44 for yourself. Cousins will voluntariyl have his nuts cut off before he would play in Cleveland. Don't be an idiot, dude. Nobody of any veteran skill level is coming to Cleveland.

There is no reason we can't convince Cousins he can come here and win now. You tell him you have our O line to protect you and Gordon, J Landry, Saquon Barkley, Duke and Njoku as weapons and BAM ?. That's 2 free agents signings and an entire draft to build a defense to support a top 5 O. Easy peezy we just need to get that Sheet done.

Yes, I personally am not one that is in the "bring in Cousins" corner.      I see the Browns future QB as having to come via the draft.....its just that I don't have a better for feeling for any of the potential draftees than I do for Cousins.   Nevertheless...as the thread title says....we are looking for a potential Bridge guy.

And I see those top candidates as being   Bradford,  McCown, or Fitzpatrick.

  • I could not let this thread go any further without putting the title song on here:

  • Interestingly....the lyrics to the song  have considerable relevance to the subject at hand:

When you're weary, feeling small  (Browns fans certainly)
When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all (all)
I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough  (who is having a rougher time?)
And friends just can't be found  (who is befriending the Browns?  no one)
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down
(we all agree that this "Bridge QB" must sacrifice himself for the greater good of the Browns, fair to say?)
    When you're down and out
    When you're on the street
    When evening falls so hard
(fits Browns fans to a T)
    I will comfort you (ooo)
I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes
(just what we need:  comfort...and someone to take our side in these dark times)
    And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
    I will lay me down

That whole list sucks donkey balls for the most part.   Chase Daniel could be interesting and Dorsey is familiar with him.  Maybe he's another Jimmy Grabsapillow.  I also think we will look seriously at Bradford and McCarron.

Agreed on Bradford- if he can stay healthy- the Vikes will likely keep Keenum and Teddy. As I posted in another thread interest in McCarron (I hope) would be close to nothing if he loses his hearing on being a UFA, and the Bengals slap a second round tender on him. I'd like to think Dorsey will tell Hue- not worth the #33- I don't care how much you like him.  They give him an original round tender- different story.

Ditto Gip's take on Fitzpatrick- he's not very good, but outside of the Po rah-rah pumpers does anyone really expect a lot of wins out of the Browns in 2018? I don't.

Didn't think McCown was a UFA, but if he's got another 2017 year production left in his 39 year old body, I'd welcome him back with open arms- and he'd be relatively cheap (last contract was for $7 million) and a perfect mentor for Darnold- or whoever we draft.

Sorry to tell the "win now" crowd, but I think you have to look at the remaining list for mentors first and players second.

Feels to me like that pushes the McCowns and Daniels up, and the Bradshaws and McCarrons down.

Harder to know what that does to Fitz, but I don't feel him being much of a mentor.

I get your point, but WSH really effed up their relationship with Cousins (and his agent) over two years of fruitless negotiations.

I think that well was poisoned.

Except he perfectly fits the mold.....Older (35) been around a lot.  Started a lot of games.  Won some. Supposedly smart (Hahvahd after all). Has little future as a starter. This type of job would seemingly be the only kind of job he would be wanted for.   Have you ever heard him express an attitude against helping a younger pup?

Fer sure, as our Redskins visitors pointed out their FO publicly bad mouthed Kirk in previous negotiations. Were they being cheap? Had to know Cousins next contract would have to be bigger than what they gave Smith.

Yeah... when I think Bradshaw, mentor is not the first word that comes to mind.

On Fitz: have you ever heard him say he wants to mentor pups? Like I said, just a feeling.

Age and experience are qualifiers, but the desire to teach is even more important.

We are obviously polar opposites on this topic. For me I am absolutely baffled by the lack of love for Cousins among Browns fans. This is a sentiment shared by a couple of the Sirius NFL radio hosts as well. They were shocked by some of the callers lack of desire to get Cousins. Hell I saw someone on this board compare him to Tyrod Taylor!! Seriously LOL Tyrod friggin Taylor!!!!

    1) Washington signed Smith because they had both destroyed their relationship with Cousins AND Smith was a cheaper option for their cap

    2) His team record is exactly that a TEAM record. He is and will continue to be a top 10 QB and with weapons likely top 5

    3) Relative to "has he seen our WR corps". What matters isn't our corps last year but rather what we can give him this season. It is well within the realm of feasibility we could give him Gordon , Jarvis Landry , Coleman and a draft pick. Not to mention Duke and drafting Barkley

If Cousins was a mediocre as some of you think Washington would have never tagged him 2 years in a row. They painted themselves into a corner in which they could no longer afford him and they ruined their relationship with him.

    Still doesn't make Fitz "qualified"...

Like I said I'm going on a felling here. So the next logical question is "based upon what?"

I think we all can remember seeing McC whether he was suited up or not sitting next to whatever kid was starting for us while our D was on the field. He was also standing on the sideline and watching "the kid" when the O was on the field. He was clearly engaged. That Hue offered him the QB Coach job said he was also good.

Being married to a Texan fan I see a fair amount of them as well as the Browns. When Fitz was a Texan in the handful of games he did not start you just did not see the same sideline behavior. Maybe he has changed, but I doubt it was during his stint with NYJ... where Fitz went to start and who let Fitz go in favor of??? McC... who went there to start, but ended up trying to coach up Petty.

Supposedly backup and mentor were the roles Fitz was ready to accept in his move to TB. I haven't read anything about how that went... hopefully better than their season.

If Cousins was a mediocre as some of you think Washington would have never tagged him 2 years in a row. They painted themselves into a corner in which they could no longer afford him and they ruined their relationship with him.

Its called winning.   Like it or not.....QB is the only position on a football team for which they keep a win/loss count.

And for all of his fairly good statistical prowess....he is a below .500 QB.  26-30-1.  And THAT is why the Redskins have passed on giving him a long term deal. If his own team that drafted him does not have much faith in him.....why should everyone else.

Flaw in this is not considering the other options WSH had. One of which was tag and trade... which I believe they tried to do without success.

I have a different word for it... lazy.

I have not heard him say it....but neither have I heard him say he would be against it. I mean...if he is smart as we think he is...he has to see that writing on the wall.  Unless he wants to retire and go do whatever with his  math degree from Harvard his only option as far as I can tell would be to take a "bridge QB job".

Fair to say?    Who is going to want to bring him in now to be their potential long term starte?  No one.

Nor does it make him unqualified.

Are you asking me that...or yourself?  I have answered it completely. in terms of his credentials...see above.

If you are asking if I would rather have Fitzpatrick or McCown...I would say McCown.

I think he was much younger than....and felt he was in a position to fight for long term starting status.

I think that is exactly what he has been doing for Winston.  Though...to be fair...your best argument against him is that Winston has regressed this year...and whatever advice/guidance Fitz has been giving him has apparently not sunk in.
