USC QBs Overrated

The Browns Board
62 17 2.3k
  • So these 22 or 23 year old young men (which they all are) from a big well known football factory are basically crap shoots? How about that.

Oh well USC is better known for running backs and cheerleaders anyway.

  • Not surprising that what was known as "Tailback U." through the early 2000's did not produce a bunch of NFL-grade QBs.

Haden did get pummeled out of the NFL, but his underwater TD:INT ratio paved the way.

  • OK, of course, Ohio State fans have nothing to crow over when it comes to their QBs:

  • Of that whole bunch Art Schlichter was potentially  the best from the old 3 or 4 yards and a cloud of dust Woody Hayes days and succeeding years. Too bad he really screwed up.

Quarterbacks, like computers or women can't live with them or without them. 😆

Has anyone in the last ten years said their was an OSU qb who was an nfl qb? I'm pretty sure everyone is in agreement that OSU does not recruit the "traditional" qb who typically makes it in the nfl. Even Pryor and Jones, anyone with common sense saw that they had major red flags.

Yes they recruit running quarterbacks that don't fumble and control the clock, west coast football it isn't.

People thought that Cardale could do some damage in the pros..   No sale.

In fact....where is Cardale?  Is he still on the Bills...or with some other team?

Or, is he a candidate for the Alliance for American Football?

Will JT Barrett even be drafted?

  • I am going to go out on a not very long limb and say that USC QBs have been basically  a pile of mediocre much....other than Carson Palmer.  And note...his career winning record is barely over .500.

Pat Haden actually had the best win pct....but he did not last all that long.   Only really a 5 year career.   Not sure is he had injuries that curtailed him. I know that he got replaced by Vince Ferragamo the year the LA Rams went to the Super Bowl.  Not sure if that was injury or performance based.

Sanchez had two years of success....then utter failure.   Rodney Peete had some decent years....but was never viewed as "franchise", I don't think.

Matt Cassell.....was really a career backup.

So...if the Browns take him....what will Darnold turn out to be?   The best QB USC ever produced?   Which is what he better be.....or will he fall into the mediocre drek that a lot of these guys are.

The only guys that he should really be compared to likely are Palmer,  Sanchez., Leinert....and maybe Marinovich....since they were the First rounders.  the rest were mostly mid to late round guys....so they should not be held to the same standard.    Though....like I said, Haden...the one with the best win pct.   was only 7th round.

Yea,  no real correlation.   Just because a bunch of QBs...or any players from one particular school  has been crappy in the past does not mean that future QBs from that school will be crappy in the future.  And vice versa.  Just because past QBs were good doesn't mean others will be good.

The only place it seems to apply really is  Big 12 QBs.   There has really been no real good one since that conference was formed in 1994. That is a period now of 24 years...and that his  10-12 schools.   (unless you count Andy Dalton as a real franchise QB.)

I guess that has to change sometime.   This year?  With either Mayfield or Rudolph?

  • So what school is the best for QBs? Alabama? Miami? Notre Dame?

I doubt it, maybe someone takes a late, late flyer on him.

For as successful as Pryor, Miller and Barrett has been, they have been absolutely dreadful passing the ball when they are in obvious passing situations. That doesn't translate to the NFL.

That is my biggest fear, although mostly irrational, about drafting Darnold at 1.

Alabama is a good choice:  l they currently have 3 HOF QBs:   Starr, Namath, Stabler

Purdue is another:    Dawson, Griese....and they will have Drew Brees when he is done (also had Jim Everett and a couple other decent ones)

UCLA has a couple:   Waterfield, Aikman

Stanford has to be considered:   Elway, Plunkett,  Luck.  All #1 overall.....along with Bobby Garrett who may actually be the biggest bust in the history of the draft:  a #1 overall QB....who never played but a handful of games....and played -0- for the team that drafted him...i.e. The Cleveland Browns.  They also had John Brodie come out of there.

Oregon has to be mentioned:  HOFers Dan Fouts and Norm Van Brocklin...plus the up and coming Mariota

Notre Dame?   Only Montana and Joe Theismann were much good.   They had their share of bad busts:  John Huarte, Rick Mirer, Brady Quinn.

Michigan has  HOF Benny Friedman....plus Brady.     Harbaugh decent.

Miami Fla.....had that group all there at the same time:   Kelly,  Bernie, Vinny.   But not much good since.   George Mir back in the 60s.

BYU was QB U for a while:  Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Marc Wilson

  • What about Wyoming? After all that's where our guy is from...... 🙂

  • Then there's the list of UCLA qb's.

    Troy Aikman...

    Brett Hundley....

    ...and.....

a bunch of guys I never heard of.

And Troy was a Sooner first and almost not a Bruin at all.......

......On October 19, Miami's Jerome Brown broke through the offensive line, sacked Aikman on the Sooner 29-yard line and broke Aikman's ankle.
