Seriously? Another Running Back?

Travis Benjamin? Doesn't make defenders miss? Doesn't run routes, can't get open...can't make plays after the catch...not explosive?Seriously? The grass is not greener just because it's on the other side of the fence...It would have been foolish to draft Austin this year, when they already have Benjamin on the team. They NEEDED a dynamic pass rusher.

And they got an undersized DE who's never played OLB in his life.

Pretty much was a great move. Demarcus Ware always played on the dl. Mingo has ALL the qualities to
become a terrific success like Ware did. Ware made the transition - and Mingo will be "set free" to utilize
his excellent physical abilities to the max at 3-4 OLB, like Ware did. Mingo was used mostly in a tight formation,
strong side - not a best case position or setup to dramatically boost his numbers.
The comparison to Wimbley, btw, doesn't work. Mingo has the strength, outstanding agility and speed,
that Wimbley never had.
I think he is going to be terrific. Can't wait to see him take the field.

And if you had actually watched Bacarri Rambo play, you might have a different view of him. But then again, maybe not. Some people have an eye for talent, others do not.
I have seen thousands of players play in college that look like gangbusters...but when they turn pro.....not so much.
You are probably the kind of guy that would have raved about how great Brian Bosworth was compared to say, Chris Spielman.

No, I'm just the guy who is telling you that Tavon Austin is going to be a terrific player and the Browns should have strategized this past off-season to acquire him. I'm also the guy who has told you that the Browns secondary is a disaster and that fact alone will prevent the team from winning much more than last year. In fact, Ward gets hurt a lot and we'll have other DB injuries, and their back ups are terrible. It's going to be a long season thanks to the ineptitude of Banner and Lombardi.

If Tavon Austin is a Porsche, Travis Benjamin is a Mazda Miata. Benjamin has made minimal impact for the Browns. Austin is going to totally change the Rams and help make them a playoff team this year.

Shanahan is famous for plugging late round running backs into his system and making them effective. He sure as shit is not known for having some kind of crystal ball with every position late in the draft. This is your logic. He had a good 6th round pick last year, this year has to be the same.
Oh Hardesty looked good in college. He has done so well in the NFL that Rambo has to be good cause that is the kind of great talent evaluator I am!
Oh you guys want me to write ONE MORE FUCKING REPLY POST! I'd sure love to write 10 in a row!
You forget, Lombadi can't tie his shoes unless by committee. That is what this dip shit doesn't get. 4 people made the decision on each pick. Lombadi, Banner, Chud, and Farmer. But Skeptical is right. It's all Lombardis fault. 4 grown as men with decades of football experiance for 6 rounds said, That Rambo kid isn't worth the sweat on my balls.
The guy is going to get the shit knocked out of him. He will have a similar injury history that Jackson has, which alone doesn't make him worth a top 10 pick.
You are going to be wrong. Austin is one tough football player. Others agree with me.
Skeptical2013 said:

That doesn't counter anything I said. I never said he wasn't going to be a bad player. He will more than likely be good. What will happen is they are going to try and use him like an every down starter, cause they need to as a top 10 pick, and they are going to make him a focal point of the offense. His small little church boy body is going to get jacked so hard so consistantly by bigger faster defenders, that his 8 year no injury streak is going to end mid way through his rookie year. That is not worth a 1st round pick.
I see no substance in your reply. What does Austin do, what does he possess that Benjamin doesn't?
They are of similar height and weight...and speed...and do the same things reasonably equally.
What are the tangible traits....or intangible traits...that make you think Austin will be so far superior?
Skills? What are those "skills"?
The difference is that Austin was put into a system that put his talents into the lime light. Screen passes and the such. Benjamin wasn't. The most inventive they got with Benjamin in college was run a streak or a post.
The real difference between the two? Austin is more shifty and Benjamin has more straight line speed.
The Pro difference? Benjamin isn't a focal point, he isn't going to get hit as often, and he will likely play more years in this league because of it.
Just because two players have similar playing styles and physical attributes, doesn't make them just as good as each other.
I haven't seen enough of either to tell you definitively why one is better, but consider just the fact that St Louis traded up in the first to get him, and benjamin was taken in the 4th and you have an idea that they're not of equal talent.
As I mentioned above, he had more production cause he was in a system designed around his skills. Benjamin wasn't.

Austin is not going to change anything for the Rams. WR's are simply shiny hood ornaments. They do have a franchise QB, but they need one of their RB's to become viable before they'll be a playoff threat.
Their OHI [offensive hog index] was 23rd last year.. not a playoff rank
I am plenty happy with Benjamin; we need a better pass rush and Mingo's athleticism is off the charts.

There are questions about his strength. Bob Golic brought it up recently. Mingo will hit the weight room, alright.
But compared to Wimbley, he has far more strength. I was just referring to a few folks that thought of Mingo and Wimbley being
a lot the same player. They aren't.
"“Mingo looks almost too lean to handle the physicality of NFL linemen, but has surprising strength to go along with the elite length and straight-line speed to rack up double-digit sack numbers (he had eight in 2011) and track down ball carriers (15 tackles for loss) as a 3-4 rush linebacker at the next level. He is a proverbial boom or bust prospect. Mingo’s production dropped as a junior, and he failed to show much overall growth in his game over the course of his career. However, KeKe flashed the talent and projectable skills to be a dominant NFL pass rusher, and a position switch will likely serve him well, as the LSU Tiger was too often asked to play in a tight alignment on the strong side in college a poor use of his strengths. Mingo’s length, athleticism, and pass rush talent figure to make him a top 20 selection in the draft.” – NFL.com"

Very good post, thanks for contributing it. My concern with Mingo is that when I watched LSU games last year -- and down here in SEC country I saw at least snippets from most of them -- is that he got pushed out of the way a lot. This will be a real challenge for Ray Horton and the staff. Mingo seems to have a good head on his shoulders -- very mature in contrast to Geno Smith -- and he knows his weaknesses better than anyone else. But one big advantage Horton has is that Mingo will be a great pupil and fast learner. That's just who he is. And that means a lot given all Horton will ask him to do.
It also says something about Mingo that his LSU teammate, Chris Faulk, who was in big demand around the league, decided to sign with Cleveland because he thinks so highly of his buddy Mingo. Don't underestimate the value of having Faulk come here -- he's going to be a big time contributor on the Browns OL.

Owens is a stiff, like Dimitri Patterson. Besides which you overestimate the impact of McFadden this coming season, who in his rookie year, is going to struggle, especially against bigger receivers . Over time McFadden may turn out to be a fine CB, but rookie CBs usually struggle, unlesss their name is Patrick Patterson.
I think it's interesting that Arizona, Horton's last team, went out and got a tremendously athletic safety in Patterson who played a key role in making Horton's defense good last year. But the Browns don't seem to emphasize the position in this defense. Bizarre.

Great suggestion! Browns have a bunch of receivers of respectable quality, but nothing of any consequence in backup roles in the secondary.
