Yes they recruit running quarterbacks that don't fumble and control the clock, west coast football it isn't.

Will JT Barrett even be drafted?

I doubt it, maybe someone takes a late, late flyer on him.

For as successful as Pryor, Miller and Barrett has been, they have been absolutely dreadful passing the ball when they are in obvious passing situations. That doesn't translate to the NFL.

Good data, Gip.  I struggle with the correlation, though, assuming someone thinks there is one. Maybe I’m wrong.

I think it's straight forward, by and large USC QB's suck in the NFL

That is my biggest fear, although mostly irrational, about drafting Darnold at 1.

  • So what school is the best for QBs? Alabama? Miami? Notre Dame?

Alabama is a good choice:  l they currently have 3 HOF QBs:   Starr, Namath, Stabler

Purdue is another:    Dawson, Griese....and they will have Drew Brees when he is done (also had Jim Everett and a couple other decent ones)

UCLA has a couple:   Waterfield, Aikman

Stanford has to be considered:   Elway, Plunkett,  Luck.  All #1 overall.....along with Bobby Garrett who may actually be the biggest bust in the history of the draft:  a #1 overall QB....who never played but a handful of games....and played -0- for the team that drafted him...i.e. The Cleveland Browns.  They also had John Brodie come out of there.

Oregon has to be mentioned:  HOFers Dan Fouts and Norm Van Brocklin...plus the up and coming Mariota

Notre Dame?   Only Montana and Joe Theismann were much good.   They had their share of bad busts:  John Huarte, Rick Mirer, Brady Quinn.

Michigan has  HOF Benny Friedman....plus Brady.     Harbaugh decent.

Miami Fla.....had that group all there at the same time:   Kelly,  Bernie, Vinny.   But not much good since.   George Mir back in the 60s.

BYU was QB U for a while:  Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Marc Wilson

  • What about Wyoming? After all that's where our guy is from...... 🙂

  • Then there's the list of UCLA qb's.

    Troy Aikman...

    Brett Hundley....

    ...and.....

a bunch of guys I never heard of.

And Troy was a Sooner first and almost not a Bruin at all.......

......On October 19, Miami's Jerome Brown broke through the offensive line, sacked Aikman on the Sooner 29-yard line and broke Aikman's ankle. Aikman, who had been six of eight passing for 131 yards, would be lost for the season. Switzer and offensive coordinator Jim Donnan were forced to switch back to the wishbone offense under freshman quarterback Jamelle Holieway. The team went on to win the 1985 National Championship. With Holieway established as the starting quarterback at OU, Aikman decided to transfer to UCLA........

  • It's mind boggling how a powerhouse like Ohio State hasn't had anyone good at QB in the NFL for decades.

Yea,  no real correlation.   Just because a bunch of QBs...or any players from one particular school  has been crappy in the past does not mean that future QBs from that school will be crappy in the future.  And vice versa.  Just because past QBs were good doesn't mean others will be good.

The only place it seems to apply really is  Big 12 QBs.   There has really been no real good one since that conference was formed in 1994. That is a period now of 24 years...and that his  10-12 schools.   (unless you count Andy Dalton as a real franchise QB.)

I guess that has to change sometime.   This year?  With either Mayfield or Rudolph?

    Mahomes possibly?

  • Looking at all the QBs drafted in the past 30 years there is no clear, winning "QBU" from a quality standpoint.

But if you look at quantity then there is one: USC with 9 QBs drafted.

Did not note any with 8, but there are a handful tied with seven each...

    • Washington
    • Tennesee
    • Oregon
    • Michigan
    • LSU

And they've had some good recievers not even including running backs that can catch.

Heisman Troy Smith in 2006? Eh.

  • Successful NFL UCLA QBs

1989 - Troy Aikman - Approximately 30 years ago there was a guy who excelled at the NFL level in the non salary cap NFL.

The rest of the guys were all Bums.

Well if you want to look at some recent QB success, look at NCSU, they have produced Phillip Rivers, Russel Wilson, Mike Glennon and Jacoby Brisette, and if you are using the last 30 years you can also add Erik Kramer.

All the Wyoming QBs drafted anyway....since the common draft began in 1966:

    Drafted Players

Rk Year Rnd Pick   Pos DrAge Tm From To AP1 PB St CarAV G GS QBrec Cmp Att Yds TD Int Att Yds TD College/Univ
    1 2004 7 218 Casey Bramlet QB   CIN     0 0 0                         Wyoming
    2 1967 6 155 Rick Egloff QB   OAK     0 0 0                         Wyoming College Stats

Not a single pass thrown in the NFL.

Their claim on Russell is tenuous at best, but they make a good case... but not a clear winner.

    Possibly, yes.

You never know....maybe a trend will be broken....Mahomes,  Mayfield, Rudolph etc.  all become stars in this league....winning numerous postseason games......instead of Andy Dalton:  0-4.

  • I put zero stock in this, Michigan QBs were overrated before Brady, Tennessee QBs were overrated before Manning, etc.

Wasn't Bill Nelson a USC guy? I liked him. May not have been drafted though.
