  • By now we've all heard King didn't think much of Weeden's chances (mostly because he simply isn't accurate enough)... but Pat Kirwan was VERY bullish on the team and Weeden:

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/pat-kirwan/22987813/browns-pass-rush-looks-improved-with-rookie-mingo-in-mix

I think Mingo is gonna be a beast. In fact, I'd say our offensive line and defensive front 7, judged by both quality and depth, can and should be among the league's very best. Based on his draft position and talent, Trent Richardson should be among the league's best few running backs... which along with about $1.35 gets you a Venti at Starbucks these days. Rams have had Steven Jackson playing at a Pro Bowl level for a very long time, right?

Assuming health (physical and mental), Weeden should have way more than enough quality targets in Gordon, Little, Bess, Benjamin, T-Rich, Dion Lewis, Cameron, and hopefully Nelson. He should have a top five line and a top five RB. He has an offense tailored to his comfort. He literally has ZERO excuses.

    It's a one-year audition, maybe less.

89 cents for a senior coffee at McDonald's. Better than Starbucks. I have one sitting right in front of me 😉

You know, with many good QBs, they do not look good when they first get to the league. Peyton, Elway, Brees etc. Some look great right away, but that is an exception to the rule. For most, at some point a year, year and a half, 2 years the light bulb comes on and they really take off. I hope that is what happens with Weeden.

Of course, for some that light bulb always stays off...see Brady Quinn. And for others, the light bulb comes on, but burns out very soon. See Derek Anderson.

Let's hope it comes on for BW3 and stays on a good long while.

The Rams suck. Going by your logic, you shouldn't draft a left tackle in the first round because the Browns suck.

Shep, we all understand that running backs have become devalued over the past decade as passing offenses have been able to open up to new levels.

You can find gems at RB anywhere through the draft (and sometimes undrafted), that is true also.

But Trent Richardson was a can't miss talent available during a year where we had a top pick and nothing at RB.

The correct thing to do was to go all in for RG3 last year. You weren't around here then, but trust me, I wanted him badly. I was obnoxious about it. I was a "RG3 Fag" if you will ...

BUT, when THEY DIDN'T ... Trent was the pick.

I know, I know ... you'd rather have Tannehill and Martin ... but I'm not that impressed with Tannehill, we'll see.

Unless you have Brady, Manning, Rogers or Brees at quarterback (we don't) you better find a way to run at people.

Last year's best teams Balt & SF were very balanced with top notch running backs.

Yes, sometimes you can get those in the 2nd round or later .. but Trent was a No-Brainer. We tied up an offensive skill position for 5-6 years.

You seem to have a real hair up your ass about us spending a high pick for a RB. He was the sensible pick (after they screwed up the RG3 thing). Enjoy him.

Five of the eight Pro Bowl RBs last year were on good playoffs teams, two of them were in the Super Bowl.

I understand (we all do) that quarterback is by far the most important position ... but having a good RB doesn't make you bad ... it's not insignificant ... it's a good asset.

Since when can we afford to snub our noses at having a good asset?

Weeden is the key. The quarterback is the key for every team. But you need other good players all over the roster.

Somehow Norv Turner was able to utilize Emmitt Smith and LaDanian Tomlinson while still having Pro Bowl QBs ... let's hope he does the same here.

Trent is a top 5 HB?

Top 3 IMO. Seriously Bro, Go ahead and name me 5 other runningbacks that you would rather have as the Starting Runningback or Face of the Franchise than Trent Richardson. The dude is a stud and in the prime of his career and will most likely only get better for the next 6 or 7 years or so...

Go ahead and try and sell me 5 other guys I'd rather have... Thinking about it I can only think of 1 other runningback that I'd really even consider... That's A.D. Peterson and he's been around awhile so he just oozes purple and gold.. Top 5 back in the NFL? You bet.

Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Ray Rice, Doug Martin, Frank Gore

At this point and time, all five of those are better than T.Rich.

That said, I wouldn't want any other RB beside T.Rich (or AP or Gore).

But as it stands at this point and time, all are better backs than T.Rich.

But how many 6 ft plus receivers played in the 80s??

    Tons!

Among the NFL's top 40 recievers, these ones played in the 80's:

    Chris Carter 6'3

    Tim Brown 6'0

    Andre Reed 6'2

    Art Monk 6'3

    Irving Fryar 6'0

    Steve Largent 5'11

    Henry Ellard 5'11

    James Loften 6'3

    Charlie joiner 5'11

    Michael irvin 6'2

    Andre Rison 6'1

In our division: Stallworth 6'2, Collinsworth 6'5, Tim Smith (Oilers) 6'2

Other than the Smurfs (Washington), the Marx Brothers (Miami) and those little run-n-shoot guys on the Oilers, I think receivers were just as big, or bigger in the 80's.

You left out possibly the best WR of all time . . . Jerry Rice 6'2" 200Lbs.

Man, I remember he ate our DB's alive that one game . . . and our CB's were Minnifield & Dixon.

I'm hoping our next CB is over 6', fast, and strong as hell.

    Time will tell.

  • I was asking "The Experts" about Weeden and they said he has been wildly inconsistent, great one play and horrible the next. If it continues for another 7-10 days, concern will set in and it might well become a competition. Which means Bridgewater, Mallett, or Boyd next year... or Lombardi earns the genius hat for saying Brian Hoyer will be a quality NFL starter.

Reports I've been seeing have said he's been much quicker on release in Camp so far.

Skill wise, it's been up and down over the few days of Camp we've had so far, but I confess I'm starting to get a little concerned.

My biggest issue has been his reads and field vision, though some of that could be a result of the Shurmur debacle - sure hope so.

I'm also hoping he explodes this year.

Wasn't overly crazy about the pick when it happened, but he's got potential.

Between the Surgeries, Injuries, and Eight Man Fronts he faced last year, I think he did a pretty darn good job.

If we can keep him healthy (which looks to be Chud's intentions) and can break up those Eight Man Fronts (Norv/Chud Offense), I think we'll see good things out of him this year.

  • I haven't seen a topic on this yet, didn't want to start a new one, and since this thread is running a bit longer than usual I've got a question for you all:

What do you think the tipping point for Weeden is this year?

By this, I mean, how many wins would it take to negate the need to draft a QB #1 next year?

  • Funny item of the day (other than Holmgren being at TC today):

Some (unknown/unconfessed) Browns beat reporter today said that we should cut Phil Taylor because he's not very good . . .

Enjoy your Weekend all, maybe we'll get some more good bits from TC this Weekend.

I think 7-9, 8-8 are the lowest he can go this year. 6-10 or lower and hes bye bye.

Who knows, Weeden could end up blazing and the D could end up sucking and give games away(doubtful, just saying anything can happen)

Its the Browns, 2008 was a year of absurd hope. 2011 also was a year of absurd hope with Hillis and McCoy. I can also say I've definetly gotten the vibe this is an absurdly hopeful year as well.

BUT the team's depth is insanely promising, better than any year since the franchise has returned. Weeden has the tools, what he doesn't have this year is excuses. He needs to show he can win consistently, especially in the division, or hes gone.

this team is absolutely capable of pulling of a 7-9,8-8 year.

  • Not to mention, Weeden has an exceptional defensive unit to back him up when he throws picks....god forbid but that still will happen. Especially throwing the ball downfield as often as we will

I've heard Mickey D's have stepped up their Coffee game a few years back, just haven't tried it for probably close to ten years myself (early early home brew).

Closing in on the Senior D myself quicker than I like, but not quite there yet myself 😄

While I think as a combo we likely have the top O & D lines, I'm just not sure if our QB is going to take advantage of it.

The Shurmur gameplan experience has just really cast a pall over my view of Weeden's capabilities.

I saw improvement in Littles abilities the last half of the season, and it seems he's really stepped up his work ethic so far.

Then you have Gordon that has absolute HOF star abilities goofing off . . . I mean really, some of the catches he made last year he made just look like simple pass and catch pratice throws.

The kid has the absolute ability to be one of the best the League has seen in years, but I'm not sure he gets it, or is going to get it.

Bess is going to be a great acquistion, he's been catchin nearly everything thrown at him for the past several years.

Run D is a possible concern, as I mentioned on another thread.

Secondary is a weakness, but it may not be as bad as I was fearing it could be . . . Owens seems to be impressing in Camp so far, and Gipson is doing well at S if he can stay healthy.

I think our Coaching is multiple levels above what is has been the last few years, the Team has enormous potential, but I'm not sure if it's going to click yet or not.

I tend to follow Vic Carucci's comments on Weeden. As we all know, Carucci is a homer, but if one makes allowances for that, one can get an idea of how things are going. In general, Carucci tends to be quiet on days that Weeden struggles and reports the improvement when he has rebounded. There has been the one notable exception when, after the fourth practice, Carucci mentions that Weeden has been uneven and has gotten off to a slow start through most of the practices.

Maybe it depends on which day a reporter decides to visit and watch practice. In any case, it may be encouraging that Carucci has reported improvement the last couple of days in a row.

    First Practice, Thursday, July 25

    >>Weeden rebounded from a slow start. After being off the mark on some early throws, Weeden began looking fairly sharp and consistently connected with his receivers. He had some nice deep passes and also showed good touch on shorter ones. As is the case in Norv Turner’s scheme, Weeden had a wide variety of targets and used them all – from receivers Josh Gordon and Greg Little and Travis Benjamin on the outside, to slot receiver Davone Bess and tight end Jordan Cameron in the middle, to running back Trent Richardson out of the backfield. And the routes were usually fairly deep. Very little dink-and-dunk stuff.

    Third Practice, Saturday, July 27

    >>Brandon Weeden rebounds. After a somewhat rough practice on Friday, Weeden rallied with a solid showing on Saturday. His throws were generally more accurate and he displayed better timing with his receivers. Weeden also spent some extra time after practice throwing passes to Greg Little. And Little continued his routine of watching numerous passes from the JUGGS machine well after the workout. If this is any reflection of the team’s overall mindset toward striving for optimum performance, there is reason to be encouraged that the striving-for-excellence-in-everything-we-do culture being instilled from the very top of the organization is catching on.

    Fourth Practice, Sunday, July 28

    >>Weeden uneven. The quarterback has gotten off to slow starts through most of the practices, including Sunday’s. But he did manage to rebound again. Weeden does a good job of connecting on longer throws, but sometimes misses the mark on shorter ones. He does have the greatest velocity and tightest spiral of the Browns’ three quarterbacks, and his release on deeper routes takes minimal effort. It’s fair to say that some of Weeden’s inconsistency is due to dealing with the complexities and variables of the Browns’ defense, so there is reason to think he can improve with time.

    Seventh Practice, Thursday August 1

    >>Brandon Weeden’s improvement. His performance showed a significant jump from Wednesday, when he mostly struggled through drills. Although Weeden got off to a somewhat slow start on Thursday, he wound up looking sharp on many of his throws the rest of the way. His biggest challenge is consistently making quick and accurate decisions of where to go with the ball. When Weeden is able to promptly determine the spot to where he is going to make a throw, he usually makes the completion. It’s when he hesitates before releasing the ball that Weeden tends to run into trouble.

    Eighth Practice, Friday, August 2

    >>It’s in the eyes. Brandon Weeden had another solid day of practice on Friday. He made some nice throws to Greg Little and even showed some decent mobility on designed runs. For the most part, it looks as if he is doing a better job of scanning the secondary (or, as scouts like to say, “moving his eyes”) for second and third options rather than being so quick to lock onto a single target.

I'm glad someone else agrees that Starbucks is some nasty Coffee.

Bad thing is, I'm currently living in the Seattle area so I'm pretty much stuck with it (work Coffee supplier).

Give me some good ole Dunkin' Donuts Coffee, probably some of the best around.

While I don't buy anything else at McDonalds and I don't qualify for the senior discount ... yet ... I drive through McDonalds every day for a large coffee ... $1.06 and as good as Starbucks or Dunkin IMO.

I've got a year to go before I get what they call in Ohio the 'Golden Buckeye Card', which gives you discounts at various places. Then I buy my white velcro sneakers, hat and golf shirt, and sit in McDonalds and read my old fashioned newspaper every morning.
