Yea, well, think about it, BB cut BK in favor of Todd Philcox. Do you think Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones would have given Todd Philcox a contract for a million dollars to play backup for the rest of that season for them? Unlikely.

So, yes, that sparked some interest in how Bernie would do that year. But I still was rooting for the Bills to win that year, not the Cowboys.

But, you know....in a sense, I am somewhat just like Everlast........He is rooting for the QB that came from his school (I assume T-A&M is his school) that was drafted by the Browns.

I too had the opportunity to root for a QB from my school that was drafted by the Browns.......by the name of Charlie Frye. And we know how that turned out.

Let's hope that JFF does not turn out to be the next Charlie Frye.

(but, you know, I am fearful there is a chance he just might)

Charlie's Fryes. I remember it well.

I have nothing but a hunch that Johnny Football is going to be a great Quarterback. Think he will be the starter after Bye week.

If the Browns are 0-3 you're going to get your wish.

    What else matters?

A little less JFF love and more objectivity would be a start. Hey, I'm an Ohio State homer- remember Dan Wilkinson (doubtful) the next Bruce Smith? Didn't quite work out that way.

Two words- Kurt Warner. Remember him? Grocery bagger washout. BTW, the Browns passed on him in the expansion draft his stock was so low.

You Johnny lovers gonna have conniptions when he doesn't start day 1? Here's a clue- it's Training Camp- preseason- which doesn't mean jack shit when the REAL season starts. If you Johnny homos start creaming your pants over his amazing exploits in the next couple months, I'm not quite certain what us Mods will have to do.

  • apparently it's logical to think the Browns drafted a QB in the 1st who doesn't have the upside of being able to win a super bowl.

this is just Retarded. fan boy this, fan boy that.

    i'm arguing with women.

Nope, it's just after (I think it's up to something like 23) different quarterbacks since 1999 come in and flop, we tend to analyze their weaknesses rather harshly. Like JFF has no holes in his game? So, he might, possibly be good enough to win a Super Bowl eventually- with the proper talent around him. You're assuming he's going to be great- going by past draft stats, there's a 33% chance of that. There's also around a 33% bust rate for first round quarterbacks, in case you didn't realize. Nope, no way Johnny could possibly bust. Well, we've seen too much of that to totally discount the possibility.

Even having a great qb is no guarantee you're going to get to the Promised Land. Just ask the Patriots, Niners, Lions and Falcons. Their quarterbacks until your man crush proves differently- are on another planet compared to him.

Hey now, he's a Cowboy fan. They know good QB play when they see it. I mean they always support their QB, especially when he is the only reason they've been lucky enough to pull of 8-8 for the past 5-20 years.

  • now that jim brown opened his yap about manziel there is NO pressure on the FO to lean towards manziel, huh?

dude needs to keep his mouth shut and let people do their jobs.

  • He is sorta dickfaced.

    Johnny the dickfaced midget.

Still reminds me of Tarkenton though ... and for you youngsters ... that's a good thing.

I remember Tarkenton when I was a kid..if JFF is anything remotely close to FT..were gonna have some rolicking fun..But I'm down with Hoyer as the season opener starter..If we sit Manziel for a season or 2..I wont be upset with that but, common sense us tells he'll start sooner rather than later.,,And great thread Gipper..I enjoyed this one...

It may indeed be logical to think that.

You must differentiate between what the Browns organization thinks and what Browns fans think. Yes, the organization may in fact think he is capable of taking the team to the SB.

The fans on the other had have a right to be skeptical.

We drafted QBs in the first round before. Now you tell me how many Super Bowls Tim Couch, Brady Quinn and Brandon Weeden combined have won.

JFF is in "Prove it" mode with us. Prove that you are not going to be just another name to join the above list. Zero playoff starts between them. (While TC did take the team to the playoffs, due to injury he could not play in the only playoff game)

You are self assured that he will "Prove it." Fine. We long time fans need harder facts.

Let me ask you this: do you know who Frank Ryan is?

In the Yahoo game we use Yahoo's line. I use it in the AFCN picks as well while Z uses a mystery line... 🙂

Just curious, do you know if the Yahoo lines are based on Vegas lines? Last year I did a pick 4, pick 6 and pick 12. Got 3, 4, and 8 right respectively. Close, but no cigar!

Report: Johnny Manziel’s off-field actions have “alarmed” Browns
Posted by Mike Wilkening on July 25, 2014, 2:35 PM EDT

At the outset of Browns training camp comes a published report indicating the organization is concerned about Johnny Manziel’s off-field activities this offseason.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, citing unnamed sources, reported Friday that the Browns were “alarmed” by Manziel’s off-field actions since joining the organization, with the now-infamous dollar bill picture particularly concerning to the organization.

Moreover, the Plain Dealer reports that Manziel’s play in OTAs “regressed” as the workouts went on — and that members of the organization believed it could be chalked up to Manziel not being diligent enough in his work.

What’s more, the Plain Dealer, citing sources, reported that some in the organization believed Manziel had “lost ground” in the battle to beat out Brian Hoyer for the starting job.

In more positive news for Manziel, the Plain Dealer reported that Manziel practiced well on Thursday. But it’s clear Manziel’s first professional offseason didn’t exactly go as some in the organization as hoped. Now, it’s on the Browns’ first-round pick to prove any discussion of his off-field habits is much ado about nothing.

Training Camp hasn't even fucking started yet?

    This article is horse shit.

  • I heard a report that JFF had not learned the playbook as was expected of him. That he was basically lost on reads that the coaches thought he should be making....and that he had acquired a bit of a paunch.

Now, maybe that last bit is just rumor, and maybe the first bit is just being a rookie.....but needless to say, the coaches were not impressed by his dedication.

Actually, no, I think the rookies have been in the last couple of days.

And camp doesn't have to have started to tell if JFF is paunchy.

  • I realize on paper JFF has the potential. But Hoyer has a fire lit under him now, and Manziel is going to have to WORK to beat him.

I don't want Manziel to start, let Hoyer see what he can accomplish.

But to say that his first offseason is a failure and we haven't officially kicked off full team training camp is a fucking joke.

Mary Kay is a fucking blow hard.

It's happened before... and not just to the Browns.

Look... I simply do not see JM as a "sure thing"... certainly not when it comes to a SB winner. I seldom see one of those at QB. Last one was Andrew Luck. JM has the potential to be a solid starter in the NFL, but whether or not he becomes one is up to him.

"Losing ground" would be the result of "regressing", so they are in essence the same thing. If true, then the root cause, not working hard enough, is a concern.

Like I said above, how far he goes is up to him.

  • I realize on paper JFF has the potential. But Hoyer has a fire lit under him now, and Manziel is going to have to WORK to beat him.

Agree about the potential, but when was the fire lit? Apparently not in OTAs...

Here's an alternate theory... JM has seen how hard others work, but believes he doesn't need to... that in the end his talent will carry him to the starting role... just as it has in the past.

JM has talent, but more talented prospects have failed by not working hard enough at their craft... and less talented have found success through hard work.

  • well pettine said last week or earlier this week (which mort reported on) that until he learns the playbook he won't be seeing any first team reps.

    so..........

  • Johnny Manziel's biggest opponent during camp may be the playbook, according to ESPN Cleveland.

    Jul 24 2014, 9:17 PMRotowire

Manziel's biggest opponent during camp may be the playbook, according to ESPN Cleveland.

    Analysis:

Manziel is set to compete with Brian Hoyer for the Browns' starting quarterback job during minicamp that opens Friday, but head coach Mike Pettine has made it no secret that Hoyer is the frontrunner out of the gate. Just like any rookie, Manziel will have to perfect his knowledge of the playbook before having a legitimate chance of overtaking Hoyer. As it currently stands, Hoyer will start the Browns' first preseason game, and will continue to do so until Manziel earns starter consideration. If Hoyer performs as expected and wins the starter's job by Week 1, it doesn't necessarily mean Manziel won't see the field. Pettine acknowledged that he'll have "special packages" for Manziel during the season, which could be designed to take advantage of his ability as a runner. However, this won't do much for his projected fantasy value until Manziel is able to take over the starting job. The Browns open the season against the Steelers, Saints and Ravens, and if Hoyer manages to look good over that tough stretch, the job may end up proving more difficult to take than anticipated.

  • manziel, hoyer and haden among others will be addressing the media on nfl network within the hour.......

heard whitner was gassed and the last to get off the field during conditioning tests. guess he thought NE ohio couldn't get hot.

he'll be fine. gonna take a while for everyone to get up to speed.

  • Watching Pettine now, and he said that he is impressed with how all of the QBs came into camp, and "they all obviously have been studying the playbook" and then went out of his way to say "especially Johnny".

  • so pettine is still speaking on nfl network as they cut to commercial and basically has said that manziel has come in and shown great improvement with his knowledge of the playbook, that hoyer will start with the ones and manziel with the twos for NOW, and dodged questions about manziel off-field stuff which i believe he should.

meanwhile the reporters knw he doesn't want to get into the personal stuff about manziel or categorizing the QB competition as nothing more than that BUT they keep picking at him.

    assholes.
